Title: Pen-y=Maes, Hay, Breconshire
Post by: Jim Murray on Monday 18 June 07 07:15 BST (UK)
My ancester Richard Jenkins c 1808 died at Pen-y-Maes, Hay on 26th November 1893 aged 83.        Does anyone have any information on this place please?    Is it a house or just an area?

thank you
Diana

Well, it's not on this list
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geogdata/ngw/p.htm

and it's not in my book of Welsh place names so probably the name of a house at the top of a field in Hay.

I've just had a look on the 1881 census as it allows you to look up addresses.
Living at Pen-y-Maes is Abraham Davies and his wife RG11/5470 folio 55 pg 9. He's an ag lab with 3 acres. Next door in Penymaes Cottage is a family of Evanses (next page of the census). So, it does appear to be a house name.

Dear Osprey - again my apologies for the late reply - I wonder why they are not informing me by email that I have some replies?    So it looks like Pen y Maes is an area of Hay then.     Thank you for that.

best wishes
Diana

Not an area, just the name of a house and a cottage.
 ;)

Dear Osprey - ah now that is interesting - I wonder if it is still standing.     It was Richard Jenkins 1808 and his wife Jane who were there and the notice of his death  in the paper said Pen y Maes Hay, Breconshire.

I will have to try to visit it if it is still standing

thank you
