Title: Jessie McGregor 1879-1951, born Alexandria
Post by: mozzer on Friday 22 June 07 14:26 BST (UK)
Does anyone have info on Jessie McGregor and her siblings? She remained unmarried as far as I can tell. She's in 1891 and 1901 census and know she was still in Bridge St, Alexandria 1915.

Cheers, Mozzer

Hi Mozzer

Do you who her parents were ? If so should be able to get info from the 1881 census. Hopefully she will be one of the younger children.

if you let me have her parents details I'll happily look it up for you.

If you don't have her parents names then I would suggest a search for her birth or death cert which will have parents names. Both of these are available at Scotland's People.

£6 for 30 credits. A search is free. Should you decide to open the search is 1 credit and 5 credits per record viewed.

Cheers

Hi Ann

Many thanks for this. Jessie was the first child of John McGregor and Margaret McGowan. Both parents and all 6 children were born in Alexandria, in 1891 census, and lived at Bridge Street. I would like to find out what happened to her and her siblings, all girls but one. On her birth cert her father is a Finisher m or in Printfield. Do you know what this might be in the local area?

Cheers

Thanks for this. Great! This looks like Jessie's parents.

Are there any descendants out there of John and Margaret McGregor?

Cheers

Hi mozzer

The details for the 1901 which is as far as it can be taken forward census wise at the mo are :

Family living at 130 Bridge St, Bonhill Alexandria

Details Elizabeth McGown (Mother in Law ) aged 72
John aged 50
margaret aged 46
jessie aged 21
maggie aged 20
helen aged 18
bella aged 16
john afged 13
annie aged 10
robina aged 7

What you can do now is use these names and dates in conjunction with Scotland's People to find births up to 1906, marriages up to 1931 and deaths up to 1956 on line. Aftyer that would need a visit to GROS where all images up to present day can be eseen on line.

Cheers

Ann

Hi Mozzer,
My maternal grandmother was Elizabeth McGowan born in Main Street Alexandria in February 1868,her parents were John McGowan who was a Carter and Elizabeth Jenkins.
I have been told that she was related in someway to McGregor's from the same area.

Elizabeth then went on to marry an Irishman Alexander Wright..did they then leave for Ireland sometime later?  On my Dads birth certificate, he was born in County Antrim.
But he had an older sister Elizabeth1891 and Thomas1893 both born in Alexandria
I'm sure there could be an connection somewhere.

Is there any descendant's of The Wrights,McGowan's McGregor's or the Jenkins from Alexandria.

Hi Mozzer,

When I married in 1957 my Mother gave me something old to carry. This was a white handkerchief with a very fine lace border.  She told me the handkerchief was given to her at the time of her marriage in Alexandria in 1926 by Jessie McGregor.  I still have the handkerchief.

Jessie, was I believe at that time Housekeeper to Dr. Cullen, who had a practice in Cardross. (This needs to be checked, because I have also seen the name Dr.Cullen in Alexandria on a list of local surnames)  This is how my Mother would have known Jessie as she was also working for Dr. Cullen as a house table maid.  My Mother's parents had died by 1924 and I think she possibly went into service following their deaths.

Several of my relatives worked in the Printfields, my Great Grandmother's occupation was that of a 'Grounder'. I didn't know what this meant so I wrote to the Dumbarton library and received the following information: 'The Vale of Leven was a textile area, with cloth bleached, dyed and printed. The printworks also retained their original name of printfield when the processes were done still in the open fields (bleaching) before natural dyeing. Chemical dyeing changed much of this. Grounders were those who applied the secondary colours in calico printing.'  There is a web-site for the Turkey Red Trust which has a lot more information.

Hi Mozzer

John C McGregor  was my great great grandfather.  I know for sure.   Jessie McGregor is my great Grandmother.  She married John Fleming and they had a son named Andrew Fleming (my grandfather).  who had my mother,  who married my father, and they had me.  Me and my parents live in Canada.  My grandfather (andrew flemming) passed away in 1999.

We always thought jessie was named bessie,  but the census showed us her true name was jessie.  I do know John C McGregor was my great great grandfather for sure, because we have a book at home showing the history of the town he lived in,  Alexandria,  and the famous football team he played on, and the book has his writing in it,  with the adress 130 bridge street  (one of my relatives went to scotland in the 30s  to research our history and brought back the book.)  If you have any questions please write back.  Im also looking for information too,  as I am reasearching my family history.

John C McGregor was a famous football (soccer) player in the 1870s, winning the Scottish Cup three times with Vale of Leven, the Alexandria team he helped to found, and also playing four times for Scotland.

Here is a picture of the team with him (although the caption has a typo with his initials!)

I suspect the book you have is 'The Old Vale and its Memories'.

Do you have details of his life? As a football historian I would be particularly interested to know his date of birth, and what the C stood for in his middle name.

Hi Meadowbank

Hopefully people have confirmed John's details from certificates etc.

From what I can see generally, his parents are showing as Alexander and Janet (Cunningham, maybe the origin of his middle initial?).

Possible birth given for him on 20 February 1851 in Bonhill, Dunbarton.

From 1851:

Alexander Mcgregor 35, Carter (printfield), b. Drymen Stirlingshire
Janet Mcgregor 32 b. Kilmarnock, dumbarton
Alexander Mcgregor 8
Janet Mcgregor 6
Anne Mcgregor 4
Helen Mcgregor 2
John Mcgregor 1 Month
Cranford Wilson    24 visitor

Address: Bridge Street, Alexandria Bonhill

Needs to be confirmed though from records...

Hello,

It is some time since the posts on Jessie McGregor so I am hoping someone picks this up.

I am not related to Jessie McGregor but came across her when I was researching my local soldiers who died in WW1. One of these soldiers was John Munnoch, the portrait painter who died 28 June 1915. In his will, he mentions his sweetheart, Jessie McGregor, 130 Bridge Street, Alexandria, he also painted Jessie. There is a death for Jessie McGregor at this address on 4 April 1951. GROS: 1951 deaths 493/00  0062  This shows Jessie as being single, a ladies outfitter and with parents John Cunningham McGregor and Margaret McGowan.

Some of John Munnoch's work hangs in the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and a staff member has produced a booklet of his life, "The Girl in the Chinese Coat"(available online), which gives information about Jessie McGregor.

Apologies for putting a spanner in the works, especially for pathfinder35.

Im beginning to think that Bessie Mcgregor  In my family tree.  Might be a nickname for Elizabeth.  Is there anybody in the Mcgregor clan from bridge street, with that name?  "Bessie" in my family tree died in Sault Ste Marie, in Canada around 1942.  I have the book old vale and its memories that my ancestor brought back to Canada.

These are the details you gave for your line. Did Bessie/Elizabeth McGregor marry John Fleming in Scotland? If so, have you tried to look for the marriage registration online on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk If they married in Scotland, the marriage entry would include full details on parents' names for both bride and groom.

In the same way, if your grandfather Andrew also married in Scotland, his marriage details would let you confirm details on mother's name too. His birth cert is another source to be able to confirm his mother's name.

All needs to be confirmed via marriage cert for Elizabeth to John Fleming and then her birth cert...but this may be the link to the McGregor family being discussed for Jessie and Elizabeth/Bessie.

In 1881, at Bridge Street, an address which features strongly with this McGregor family line:

Alexander McGregor 68 gen lab. b. Drymen, Stirlingshire
Janet McGregor 64 b. Kilmarnock, Dumbartonshire
Alexander McGregor 38 son
Jessie McGregor 36 daughter
Robert McGregor 27 son
Elizabeth McGregor 5 granddaughter

Address: 130 Bridge St, Bonhill

Marriage discussed earlier for Elizabeth and Jessie's parents:

john mc gregor married margaret mcgowan, 20/11/1875 bonhill, dunbarton

Confirming details from this cert would let you verify Elizabeth's parents' details.

I have just had a look at the marriage cert.
1896 Marriages  GROS: 493/00 0031
18 March 1896 at 120 Bridge Street, Alexandria.

Bessie McGregor was living at 120 Bridge Street, Alexandria. She was 19. Her parents are, wait for it, John McGregor, Printfield Hand, and Margaret McGowan. Witnesses were William Fleming and Jessie McGregor.

So you were in the right family. Seems they had a Bessie and Jessie!

Monica,

Just looked at your 1881 census info. Bessie's age at marriage matches Elizabeth on the census. The info I found on Jessie gave her address as 130 Bridge Street too.

Mags, that is great to hear confirmation  :)

Looks like Elizabeth showed with grandparents both in 1881/1891. By 1901, we have her married and living at 2 North St. with her young family. However, given that in 1891 the address for both grandparents and parents is 130 Bridge Street, hardly a stone throw away!

Thanks for all the info.  "Besie" (most likely a nickname) in my family records was actually "Elizabeth"  in the census records.  I just got confused with Jessie and Bessie.  All the info and the records make sense now.  I just had the wrong family member.  Thank you

Hello Pathfinder35,

Glad you have it sorted. If you click on the link, you'll be able to see two of John Munnoch's paintings of Jessie. Perhaps you'll see a family likeness!

Hello Monica,

For information, John Munnoch is remembered on his family's gravestone in Uphall Cemetery, West Lothian.

Interestingly, his brother Peter, who was executor of his will, was appointed the Governor of Allan-Fraser Art College, Hospitalfield, Arbroath in 1909. In fact, John painted a picture of his brother Peter sitting at his desk and also Hospitalfield itself. Today, Hospitalfield is a residential art centre, music and conference venue. A few of John's paintings are still at Hospitalfield.

pathfinder35 - I have newspaper cuttings including a photograph of John Munnoch. Willing to email them to you.
