I have found similiar in the local paper where there was an account of the trial but also the National Archives in Scotland have all the prison records for Scotland.
Fraid I don't know what the local paper for that area was at that time but is worth contacting Jedburgh library
http://www.scotborders.gov.uk/life/educationandlearning/libraries/libraryservices/librarydetails/18546.html
They are most likely place to hold old newpapers and if anything like Paisley library will look for you for free!
Another one to try is the Borders FHS http://www.bordersfhs.org.uk/BFHSFamilyTreeSearchForm.asp
NAS can be contacted at http://www.nas.gov.uk/
