please could you advice me.
I have just obtained a Will of one Thomas Weaver
Thomas lived most of his life in Montgomery was married and buried in St Nicholas church Montgomery but he was NOT bap in that church. All census say he was born in Montgomery so I am assuming he was born on a neighbouring parish - I am having this
investigated but I am looking into property he may have owned. Also
mentioned in the Will is Piggin Tavern - I don't know if this is a place a
building or street.
According to the will which is very hard to read he seems to have owned one
if not 2 farms - he was a Mason by trade. I am not at all familiar with the
place names of Wales and was wondering if you could advice on how to find out about any property. I can supply a copy of the Will if it helps but to me the place looks like Trefeglewys,
help appreciated

do you have an approximate date for when he owned the properties.
-
well he obviously still owned them at the time of his death in 1848 as he left them to his wife Mary - she died in 1854 but I have found no Will for her yet

Also mentioned in the Will is Piggin Tavern - I don't know if this is a place a
building or street.
Have you seen this?
"Located in Wales. The Piggin Tavern in the small town of Montgomery, Monmouthshire, was evidently named from its pub sign, which must have displayed a piggin. In Shropshire, this meant a wooden can from which people supped food such as porridge or beer. "
There's more on www.piggin.de/locations.htm

many thanks

Can you scan and post the part of the will which mentions the farms? They might still be in existence.
Monica
-
I could but am not sure how to do that
lets have a bash hope this works if not can someone tell me how
I think farms are mentioned around the yellow marked area
-
oh look clever me it worked
;D
-
Well done! I always have trouble adding scans. :(
I see why you can't make out the names of the farms. It might be worth amending the topic title to ask for help reading the will. Some folks on here are really good at deciphering old writing.

Teresa.
I read the first farm as "called the Bottom Farm" and the other as "called The Wain" (perhaps should be Waun).

In the 1851 census there is a Wain farm in Trefeglwys, occupied by a Bumford family. It's only 8 acres so I doubt that it has survived as a separate entity.
No luck finding a Bottom Farm, though. What would the name be in Welsh?
Monica
-
By 1851 my family had died so if it is Wain Farm another family being in it is to be expected - I thought Bottom Farm myself but was unsure but its looking more likely
as for the names im Welsh I would have no idea as I do not know Wales at all this is a new area of research for me

Teresa,
From what it says in the will I don't think the Weaver family lived at either farm, I think they rented them out.
I'll trancribe it as best I can. Give me a moment my typing Skills aren't the best. ;D

Chris,
Fantastic work! What a funny 'd' the scribe uses.
I'd think that the ??? is Pryce - what do you think?
And, given the funny 'd', that Davis is actually David.
JAP
-
Jap,
You are right it is David :-[
I'll amend my transcript.
Thanks
Chris
-
Jap,
Just taken another look and agree with you on Pryce.
Also checked 1851 and there is a Price Weaver mason & innkeeper in the area.
Chris
-
That is brilliant thank you so much to everyone who has helped to shed light on this
I am very appreciative and yes it is Pryce
Teresa
-
Have you tried the tithe maps and schedules of the area - most were take around early 1840's
I managed to find my relatives farm and the details of all the land he owned around it.
Copies may be held in the local reference library or county record office
-
no I hadn't tried that another area to look into thanks so much
Teresa

John Weaver, George Weaver, ??? Weaver, David Weaver, Mary Weaver and Esther Weaver...
Pryce Weaver. Whoops I see you've resolved this already.
Regards

Sorry to resurrect a 10 year old thread but wondered if Pigginnut had made any more progress with identifying the farms and where Thomas Weaver had acquired them.
I only ask as I'm a distant relative and had got stuck around this point.
