Title: QLD/NSW Lookup please
Post by: ajcarroll on Monday 02 July 07 05:13 BST (UK)
Hi All

I am finally back onto the family history track and am now as confused as ever!!

My gg grandmother's name is Catherine Donoughoe. Now on her QLD 1881 marriage certificate to Thomas William Casey it states that she was born to Michael Donoughoe and Ellen Clifford in Goulburn NSW and her age at this time was 20. So I am guessing she was born about 1861.

I have looked at the NSW BDM and cannot find her with parents of this name but have found a Catherine Donohue born to Michael and Julia in Goulburn in 1861 which is the only thing I have found that is anywhere near close. (I did find children to a Michael and Ellen of this town but they were not named Catherine and the year of birth was incorrect)

I was hoping that maybe some info with her death might shed some light on the situation. I have found her death in the Brisbane Grave search as Catherine Casey buried 02/07/1935. Would it be possible for someone to search the death records for me and see if there are parent names attached??

I have also my gg grandfather's police records and there is another surname variation of O'Donoughue in these. But I have searched all of the name variants I can think of.

I cannot seem to find anymore information that can lead me anywhere so any help will be much appreciated!!!

Cheers

Andrea  :o

Hi Andrea

1935 Qld is only available at libraries etc. so may have to wait a short while until someone is heading that way. Thus said, the information on a marriage certificate would usually be  more accurate than on a death certificate. Is it possible that Julia perhaps died shortly after the birth of Catherine - Michael then remarrying & Catherine not knowing her "real" mother.  I will have a browse of the NSW marriages  :)

Hi Trish

That is possible. I originally did a search and found 2 Mary's born to Michael and Ellen and thought maybe one of them was my Catherine, but then realised the date was all wrong. But this could be possible.......oh this is a great thought! Now I am going to have a good look  ;)

Cheers

Hi Andrea,

I can pop over to the Archives to check that death for you, maybe later this week if that's OK.

No I don't think so - if it's only Catherine's parents you are after.

Have a think and if there's anything or anyone else you need looked up while I'm there I'll be happy to do so.

Hi Andrea,

I have just come back from the archives, searched rootschat for your post so I could reply, and discovered that you already had much of the BMD info I found.

Nevertheless I will list what I found although some of it will be duplicated from previous lookups.

Catherine Casey died 1st July 1935, father Michael Donohoe (spelling as per fiche), mother Ellen Clifford.

Irving Sydney Crow married Hannah Chamberlain 22 Dec 1888.
Hannah Crow died 26 Jan 1894 (father William Chamberlain, mother Sarah Ann Goddard).

Irvin Sydney Crow married Sarah Elizabeth Janson 4th April 1899.
Sarah Elizabeth Crow died 11 Dec 1916 (father Laurens Janson, mother Sarah Boyle).

Irvin Sydney Crow married Maud Kathleen Victoria Wright 1st Feb 1918.

Irvin Sydney Crow died 17 April 1929, father Robert Crow, mother Elizabeth Hall.

Maud Crow died 10 Feb 1948 (father Percival George Wright, mother Mary Conniff)

Irvin's children with  Hannah:
Ada Sophia Violet b 28 May 1890
Louie Linda Lily b 10 Nov 1893 (Lowie married Patrick Byrne on 2 Oct 1922)

Irvin's children with Sarah:
Hilda Mercia b 19 Mar 1900 (Hilda married George Dicker 18 June 1921)
Irvin Laurens b 1 Jan 1905 (Irvin married Myrtle Jane Smith 21 June 1926)
Dulcimer Theddlethorpe b 1 Feb 1903 d 8 Feb 1916
Leila Edith b 25 July 1912
Myra Catherine b 7 Mar 1910 (Myra married Arthur West 20 Mar 1933)
Una Corelli b 14 OCtober 1906

Irvin's children with Maud:
none found

I suppose you could order Irvin's death certificate to glean more information.

Had a look at the immigration books.
This may be Irvin:

Crow Irwin S, age 19, ship Dorunda, arrived 1 Aug 1885, IMM/120, p 239, Z1962
The film give little more information except that his "status or calling" was "L" which I think is labourer. And he is from Lincoln.
These two were on the same ship, also from Lincoln and both domestic servants:
Clara Crow age 23 and Edith Crow aged 15.

I hope this information is of some help to you. Let me know if you need further lookups.

Wow thanks Ruskie.

There is some new info on there which is great!! I was this very minute researching and trying to find some of these things. I am so happy.

I have just put in a request for a couple of documents I found for Irvin Sydney Crow and Ernest Wilfred Crow. I think they might be brothers. I might have to research the ship Dorunda and find out if Ernest came over as well on the same ship!

Thank you for al of your help.

Andrea  ;)

Hi Andrea,

Glad to be of help. In case it may be useful, many of my rellies came out in dribs and drabs eg. one came out with a couple of brothers, a couple of years later the parents and younger sisters came out - that kind of thing. Those were the only Crows on the Dorunda that trip. They appear to be related. Ernest may have come out on another ship at a different time. There were many ships going to and fro continually from Britain to Australia and back again.

Once you get your info organised just give me a yell if you need more look-ups.

Hi,
Not sure what documents you refer to that you have applied for.
Lots on NAA about their inventions and this

http://fhr.slq.qld.gov.au/committees2/cr_cu.htm

which tells a little of each of the 2
Crowes you mention and one other named JOHN Crowe..  I suspect a connection in John as his business with the committee is very similar to Irving Sidney's

Ernest's business is particularly interesting as he a 'Kanaka Agent'  These were islanders brought in to work with the sugar-cane.  His 'inventions' also seem to be about the cane industry.

It does seem like an odd combination of family members taking the trip on the Dorunda - Irvin, and two sisters. Perhaps there were already some family members in Australia.

Irvin is not with the family in 1881 and they now have Herbert Crow 7 and H A Bertie Crow 4, no sign of a John

Hi Everyone

Thanks for all of your help. I think they definately did come out in dribs and drabs. This means that Albert and Ernest came out on a different boat also. I think I may have found Albert on the Almora. And if this is correct he was the first to arrive in 4 Dec 1883.
I def know that Albert came out as he was married in 1897 to Mary Sommerville McKenzie in QLD.
I cannot seem to find good ol' Ernest though.  ::)

I might try and get access to the business's that Ernest and Irving were involved in as on one of the certificates that I have it states that Irvin is a hotelkeeper. It all looks VERY interesting though.

Cheers

hello to all you Crow researchers . i am a great grand nephew of irving sydney crow's wife Sarah Janson. He was known as Syd within the Janson family and was well known in the Gladstone Queensland district being apparently quite well off. He did have several hotels among other interests.Wilfred Crow was most certainly related and spent a large part of his life in Bundaberg Queensland. Blackbirding has never been mentioned in family folklore but who knows? Wilf Crow is said to have developed Bundabergs first town swimming pool. It was salt water and flushed and filled by the tide. The Grand Hotel in Bundaberg was [according to my Mother] owned by the Crow Family as well.Syd Crow was also a Calliope shire councillor for many years.I hope this info was helpful to you.Cheers Baz a cousin of cousin.

my grandfather was Irvin Sidney Crow the 3 rd son of Robert & Elizabeth from Theddlethorpe the other children being  Wilfred Duncan Mac & Bert .I remember his brother Duncan who lived in Bundaberg Queensland .The children I remember we're Wilfred & Evan & I knew his wife as Aunty Minnie(could be a nick name for Mary?) There could have been more children. Maud Crow had one son Patrick known as Paddywho was an Australian champion cyclist around the late 1930s .As far as I know Clara & Edith Crow were not connected to the family. Do you have any information as to Robert's forebears?

Welcome to rootschat (belated) Blur and B&A.  :) Andrea doesn't appear to have been online for a couple of years, so I hope she receives notification of your replies.

B&A, if you don't hear anything from Andrea, you can always start your own thread on the Lincolnshire board in your search for Robert's ancestors. Just tell us what you already do know and what you are still searching for (names, dates and places etc can be useful to anyone trying to help you).  :)

Hi Blur and B&A, Welcome to RootsChat :)

I think that Andrea may have changed email addresses so did not pick up on your first replies but have since spotted her on a expat forum so sent her a message to tell her of the new replies. Hope she is back soon.

Regards

Sarah :)
