Hi Supastitcher,

Thank you very much indeed for that look-up. It helps me a lot. I don't suppose the names of the parents were mentioned by any chance?

Best wishes,
Sue

Sue,

You very rarely get the names of parents mentioned at that date - they were not recorded as a matter of routine.  This is the format for marriages 1754-1837:

Marriages 1754 - 1837

In accordance with Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1754, marriages were entered into pre-printed registers, three entries to a page.  The format was as follows - the words in italics are the sort of thing that would be filled in by the officiating minister

John Brown of  this Parish
bachelor/widower
and Sarah Smith of Newtown Parish
spinster/widow
were married in this Church by Banns with the consent of
...................................................this twenty-first day of
September   in the year One thousand seven ( or eight) hundred and ninety-seven
By me James Long Vicar
This marriage was solemnised between us   ) John Brown
) Sarah Smith her mark X
In the presence of   ) William Brown
         ) Thomas Heath

Hi Sue - I am not used to this family search process but as a birthday for my mother Joan Guyett I googled Guyett Andover and came across your entry about the marriage of Robert and Jane in Andover, who may be  in my mother's line.  Interestingly the name seems to have changed through Guyett, Guyeth to Guyatt.  Have you found this or have we made a mistake somewhere?  Would value your thoughts.  Many thanks Jean

Hi Jean,
My ancestor, Robert Guyatt and Janes's son, also called Robert, moved to Brentford in the 1850s and after that he and his descendants were known as Guyett. One of his brothers moved to Essex and there are many descendants from him, some changed their surname to Guyett and some did not. I have not come across Guyeth as yet.  Is your mother from Andover?

Hi Sue  Thanks for the quick reply!  My mother's grandfather was George Henry Guyett  b. 1836 Andover, son of Edward Guyett b. 1873. are these your relations?  Jean

Hi, Yes, I have these people in my tree. My great great grandmother was Martha Guyett who was Edward's sister. Edward married Annie Abbey on 7th Jan., 1900 at Old Ford St Paul. Joan is the youngest of seven children. She was born in Brentford in 1921. There are two Joan Guyetts born in 1921, one married William C May in Sept 1942 and the other a man with the surname Stanton in 1945. If you would like more information, please let me know.

Fascinating!  My mother's grandfather was Edward.  she is Joan Guyett who married George Stanton in 1945.  so I must be related to you distantly.

Have you found an origin for the name Guyett? My mother thinks that they came from France originally.

Sorry I meant Edward was my mother's father. I remember Edward when I was a child and he was very old.

I will ask my mum about Martha. Today is her birthday- she is 93!  She is one of 7 Catholics - there were many Guyetts in the area.

Have you found any information about the Abbey/Abby line?

Jean

Hi Jean,
That's right, we would be distant cousins. I believe our common ancestor was Henry Guyett and not George Henry. He died in 1895. I would love to know more about him. I have a photo of Martha Guyett taken in 1925, at her daughter's wedding, which I could send to you if you are interested. Do you have any old pictures of the Guyetts? She married Thomas Kimbell and they lived in Cross Lance's Rd., Isleworth. Her daughter Mary Ann was my great grandmother. No, I haven't managed to go back much further than a Robert Guyatt born about 1725 but I'm not too sure whether I've got that right. They were from a place called Charlton near Andover. There were loads of Guyetts, descendants from Robert, all over Hounslow, Isleworth and over places nearby, and probably still are. I was born in that area too. How about you? My email address is topaz00511@yahoo.co.uk.
I would love to hear what your mother remembers.
Regards,
Sue
