Title: BARROWAY DROVE
Post by: Luella on Thursday 12 July 07 17:27 BST (UK)
I HAVE A PICTURE,TAKEN CIRCA.1888/90
probably of a Sunday School Class(teacher and abt. 30
children).A slate held
by child in the centre, has Barroway Drove, written
on it.
Has anyone else seen this picture anywhere?

It could be the Methodist Church as there was one in the village, but sounds like a typical village school photograph.

The School Records will be at Norwich RO and there is a Community web site for the village.

Barroway Drove is a village just outside of the town of Downham Market

Hi All,
I have seen photos of the Methodist Chuch.
Indeed,the Jackson Family,were Methodists.
What I would really like to see is a photo of the
Local School.
Any suggestions anyone?

So pleased you have found the location of your photograph.

It is so typical of a village school to have a photograph of all the pupils, ranging in age from approximately 3 years of age to about 13 years.  Depending on the time of year,  children would be off school working on the land stone-picking, crow scaring, gleaning etc.

I have a photograph of the village school where I live, fortunately the slate being held by the child middle/front of the picture has the village name and the year.

Good luck with the searches,

Dear SM
The picture I have has other printing on the slate, but it
will take better eyes than mine to decipher the smaller print.
Sure wish I could put it on  the Web, for all to see but, alas, don't have the capability.
The Barroway Drove Web Page has promised to do so in the future.
Thanks for steering me  to their Web Page.

Hi,

We are working on a new history website for Barroway Drove which will hopefully be launched very soon, maybe spring/summer this year (2019).

The will be a page dedicated to the school. If your photo does not end up on there please let us know. If anyone has information of photographs related to the history of Barroway Drove then it would be great if they could be included.

There will also be a page (or pages) dedicated to the people that lived there so family history is very relevant.

Luella, what's your connection with the village/school?

Steve

The mention of Barroway Drove brought back a forgotten memory but one which changed my driving forever. Driving east on the A1122 towards Downham Mkt. through the village, which is a set of sweeping bends, I rounded the final one as a toddler wandered straight out of her garden into the middle of the road. If I had been at the 40mph limit I would have been unable to avoid her but thankfully, I was (for once) driving sensibly.

"We all obey the speed limit in our own village!"

My Grandads side of the family originate from around the Barroway Drove Area, including Nordelph and Stow Bardolph. Surname Pearce if any connections? :)
