does anyone have any information on the watchmakers of coventry 1841 - 1900 particularly Charles Flint. I have found out that Charles lived in Craven street coventry in 1851 and he employed 41 people. I know his house is on the coventry watchmakers heritage trail and now bears a plaque with his name on it.
Any info will be great

Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World volume 2 by Brian Loomes lists: FLINT, Charles, Coventry 1854-1880.
-
I bought a booklet on the subject from Coventry Archives some time ago. Part of the Coventry Through Time series it is part 13 and called Past Timers by E.Castle and C.Kennedy. Although not mentioning Charles Flint it does paint a good picture of the watch industry in the 1800s and does list some of those involved. You mention Craven Street and in the booklet it says Mr J Parker in March 1853 built two houses and a workshop there. Apparently the Board of Health had to pass plans and I presume the record of meetings is still available to be seen as it says that last entry was in 1857 and was for one house in Craven street, builder Mr Hedger. I am sure Coventry Archives would be able to help you.

If you wish to see the book, ask your local library to either get it for you through interlibrary loan service or to find out where it might be in your area.

However, there are no more details in it for Charles Flint other than what I posted earlier.

For those interested in Coventry SANDERS. please get in touch as a number of the family are currently researching the area for the extended family.
For the owner of the reference book on the subject, could you kindly provide the names of any SANDERS listed? I have a provisional list of same on my website, but not from this source.
Thanks & regards,

In amongst the classified trades for Coventry in 1874 was a section on Watch Gilders of whom R.T. Stillwell of 9, Duke Street was one.
This Street was in the Chapelfields area and the street is still there to this day.

Hello Mark
have taken a look at your website, great stuff very interesting site.
I think I might have information for you on the Sanders family. I have been researching Sanders of Coventry for a very short time, nowhere near the years you have put in, although I have done quite a bit on my Irish side of the family. I believe that I may have the branch of the Sanders family that comes from John Sanders born 1793 mother and father William Sanders 1766 mother Eleanor Litchfield (Married 4 Jan 1787 St Johns Coventry.
John had siblings William 1787 (your William) and Ann 1791.
John Sanders 1793 married Mary (unknown maiden name) they had 2 children that I know of who were John Sanders 1820 and William Sanders born 1815 Coventry.
William 1815 Silk Ribbon Weaver married Sarah Ann Jelley 1815 in St Johns Cov in 1835 - children were Emma 1835, Sarah 1838, Mary Ann 1842, Louisa 1822, Hannah, Eliza 1839 and William 1844. All born Coventry St Johns.
William 1844 married Mary Ward 1846 in Holy Trinity in 1865 - children, John, Emma, William Mary, Louisa, Samuel, Walter and Henry 1881.
Henry Sanders 1881 married Harriet Flint 1881 married in 1904 Holy Trinity. The Flints were big watchmakers in the area.
Son of Henry Sanders and Harriet Flint
William H Sanders born Coventry 1909 married Anne Bristow in Coventry in 1936
Children of William and Anne. LIVING
I had a little information on the Sanders from Jim Perkins whose family tree also show a Elizabeth Crisp, and more information on the Sanders and Flints from the founder of this thread Dawn. As I say I have only been researching this for a little while and there are many gaps, other names associated witht his branch are, King, Jelley, Gittins, Perkins (birmingham), Ward, Flint.
Carol
-
Thanks Carol - very interesting. John has hung on the side of the tree for many years. As you may have noticed the descendant tree from William has just grown and grown, and in parts is quite complex.
A couple of my UK SANDERS cousins are actively researching the family at this time (I am limited to online discussion as I'm elsewhere - actually in the city that had a lot to do with the demise of the watchmaking industry in Coventry & B'ham, i.e. Geneva), and I will pass on your news for their comments.
As a SANDERS cousin, please stay in touch through the email on my website (let me know yours), and we can keep you in the loop offline on ongoing research concerning Nicholas et al. For the last few months there have been 1-2 emails a week of SANDERS discussion.
Looks like I may have to spend some time this weekend updating my trees.
Regards,
Mark

Carol - Pls include Jim Perkins offline contact details if he is interested in the ongoing extended SANDERS watchmaking family discussions, or if Jim reads this, please get in contact offline by email. My email is on my homepage.
Thanks,
Mark

I am delighted there are so many researching the family, this is all going to be quite a suprise for my father in law when he visits the midlands in April. I would be greatful if you could pass on my mail address to the "active" cousins. I will keep in touch via the site.

Hi Aghadowey
thanks for lists, I am sure that they will come in very useful during my research.
Carol
-
You are welcome Carol. I originally answered a request from someone who didn't bother to thank me for looking up all the details.
-
Yes, the watchingmaking lists were very interesting. Thanks. They illustrate well how quickly Coventry didn't feature in the future of watchmaking.
BTW - If anyone is related to the Albert of Birmingham listed I have in another tree (you will need to review both of the SANDERS families on my website on separate webpages).
Thanks also to all for recent posts. I have been snowed under with personal messages from my recent postings. Sorry if I haven't responded to all yet.

Mark

You might find this of interest in regards Sanders.

Re: The Will of William SANDERS 1712 - We think this is the same one we currently have as the head of our Coventry SANDERS family. He was a tailor. It seems the watchmaking involvement of the family took hold during the middle C18th.

Hi,
I am looking for information on Joseph Baker. He is registered as living in Coleshill in 1839 and he is said to be a clock and watchmaker. I think he was married to a Martha Boddington.
Thanks

Hello there
I notice that you have been talking about watchmakers of Coventry. Some of my husbands ancestors worked at Rotherhams in Coventry. Is there anyone who knows where abouts in Coventry Rotherhams was situated and when did it close down? Are there any photos of the place?

i too am looking for a watchmaker. STILWELL @ SONS UNITY BUILDINGS , LITTLE PARK STREET, COVENTRY ESTABLISHED 1825. RICHARD STILWELL. SON RICHARD THOMAS STILWELL. CAN ANYONE TELL ME MORE ABOUT THEM.
Hello, yes my grandfather was Jonathan Stilwell of Stilwell and Sons. His Father was Jonathan Robert. Then Richard T was his parent. The line goes back to the watchmaking family in Clerkenwell, London. It was Jonathan Robert who left London for Coventry so the firm was started in London. He had businesses in Earl Street,Little Park Street and in Jordon Well .
-
My family also had Coventry watchmakers, watch dial painters, etc. The family name was PLAYER, and they also had homes and workshops on Craven Street. However, I'm trying to trace them back farther. Originally from London, then in Birmingham at some point.
If anyone can direct me to a reference for the watchmaking industry in London and Birmingham, I'd appreciate it. My direct ancestor, Thomas Player, was born in Birminham in 1803, according to all census entries, and set up business along with other family members (William Player, Joseph Player) in Coventry in the early part of the 19th century.
-
I can tell you that there are links as with my Coventry watchmakers and the watch and clock making district of Clerkenwell in London. in mid 1800s sons of my ancestor Edward Atkins were born in Clerkenwell and later baptised all together in St John, Coventry. I am wondering whether the links are through apprenticeship, though Coventry had its own apprentices and some of them were published by the Dugdale Society. Hope this helps.
-
My daughters ancestors on her fathers side were very well known watchmakers in Coventry - the Charley family.
-
Very interesting thread
My Great Great Great Grandad Charles Beauchamp lived in spon street and was also a watch maker in 1881 he was a watch cap springer and in 1891 he was a watch spring polisher.
I was in the Herbert art gallery and Museum in Coventry last week and they have a very interesting display on the watch makers of coventry.
Some watch makers worked from home doing specific jobs and the watches would be taken from house to house to be worked on.
A young lad who was working with his dad learning the trade made a list of one of the watches journeys and that list is up in the museum. It gives the names and proffesion of everyone who worked on the watch.
There are also some watches on display and they give the names of the people who made them.
If anyone would like me to go back and see if your family is listed then give me the name and I will gladly check it for you.
-
Denise, if you dont mind, I'd be interested in any Charley's who are on there.
-
yes rebekahm I can do that for you
I wonder if they will allow me to take pics ???
I will pop down there next week and ask. If I can I will take some and post them here

Hi,
I too have Coventry watchmakers in my family and was wondering if anyone had seen a mention of them in any records?
John KING, according to the 1871 census, lived in Craven St. He is listed as being a watch dial manufacturer employing 5 journeymen. By the time of the 1881 census he was living in Russell Tce. By 1891 he had died but his wife, Mary, was carrying on the family business.
During this time period it seems that all members of the family worked at various aspects of watch manufacture.
If anyone has seen a mention of this family I would love to know about it.
Thanks
-
In the book 'The mystery of the Coventry Cappers' It states that the Watchmaking trade suffered a depression in the 17th century until 'about 1750 when the first of the Rotherams and John Bottrill, began to develop the craft again.'
At 72 years of age I'm a novice at this researching ancestors business but I know that on my father's wedding certificate his father is shown as William Bottrill Watchmaker.
Despite these clues I have been unable to gain any further history of my ancestors or their standing in the Watchmaking trade. From Western Australia it is sometimes difficult to follow things up. So I'm asking if anyone in their own resaerch has any information that could assist me in this endeavour before I become an ancestor myself.

My g.g.grandfather Joseph Thomas Batting was a watchmaker, dial painter and finisher, from Spon street Coventry in the 19th century his family were also involved in the business, has any one any information on him, I would be made up if I could find anything about him

Hi Annijac ;)
firstly...for some reason I have just received notification of your post which I note was posted in January ?? how odd.
Have your searched census pages for Joseph Batting ?

There was a post earlier which I split from this thread and moved to Beginners board- which is why you rec'd a notification for this thread but there's nothing new here now.

Hello Denise Jo
It was 2 years ago you entered this offer, but if you could see if my watchmaking family of ATKINS is listed in the hERBERT Museum I would appreciate it very much. Thank you!
-
Denise Jo has kindly offered to look in the Coventry Watch Museum, I wonder could you look and see if my gg grandfather,s name is there Joseph Thomas Batting known as Thomas I believe. Quote" an other distinct loss to the horological trades is to be noted in the lamented death of Thomas Batting gold an silver dial finisher, of Coventry, at the age of seventy four years. He was apprenticed to Williamson of upper charles street, clerkenwell, became manager to Bovey of Corporation Row, and married Mr Bovey,s daughter. finding that the Swiss could beat us in cheapness and syle of work, he went to Geneva to see their methods and to make improved engines and machines for frosting the grounds of the dials also dial painting machines and in all parts of dial making to bring new and improved tool to bear. After some years he returned to England and set up in Upper Ashby street, Clerkenwell, and after a year or so went to Coventry. His dials were the flattest and most delicate in finish and were the least trouble of all dials to fit to the movement and the colouring was his own secret and has never been equalled his widow carries on the business" unquote. Jacque.

Hello all, I have only just found this thread again. I too am researching watchmaker ancestors. In my case the name is Furneaux - watchcap makers from Clerkenwell in London, who moved to Coventry in about 1830.
If anyone else is researching this family, they may have found out where they came from before 1765, when Lewis Furneaux - a watchcap maker - married Elizabeth Paine in Clerkennwell, London. I have hit a brick wall here - were they Huguenots or Normans up from Devon?

quite a few mentions of Charles Flint in the British Newspaper Archives c1850-1870s. Looks to have been active in local politics etc.

Hello, I too am researching the Furneaux family originally from Clerkenwell London and who moved to Coventry. My great grandmother was Emilie Isabel Furneaux - daughter of William Furneaux - his father Thomas Furneaux was the brother of Lewis Furneaux. I am also intrigued as to why they left London and for more general information about the family particularly Samuel Furneaux born 1765 in London but for whom I have no further information.

Hello Debs
See my entry of 22 Mar 09 on this topic, My ancestors Atkins were in Clerkenwell but appear to have been a Coventry family. This also intrigues me the connection in the trade between the two places that were watchmaking centres.

Hi, I have a superb silver and gold dial made by your great great Grandad, Thomas Batting circa 1860 let me know if you are interested in it. I can supply photos, Kind regards Robert

Hello, I am researching my family of Watchmakers living at 29 Spon Street in 1841 - Joseph Brown. This family was also connected to the Furneaux family also Watchmakers from Clerkenwell London. Would appreciate any connections from other researchers please.
-
Have you visited the museum on Spon Street? Or is it called Old Spon Street now, not sure. I live nearby.
-
Thanks for the suggestion - I am aware of Spon Street but didn't know about the museum - will make time to visit at some point when I am in Coventry.
-
Danum 40 thank you for your reply about my great g g grandfather watch dial you said you could send me pictures of his watch dials I have only just read this post I would really like to see them, I have already looked at the ones in the V & A museum, which are quite impressive.

I am also related to the Battings.. They were watchmakers, springers, and liners. The one that moved to American designed two wedding rings for sisters.
I would like to know more about Joseph Batting who was born 1786 and died in 1850.- who is parents were.

Debs ,
I am in contact with a person whose grandmother is Emilie Isabel Furneaux, who remembers Isabel vaguely as the person was only 9 when she died, but is much more knowledgeable of George. The person lives in Leicestershire. I can place you in contact with him if you wish.

Hi DeniseJo
I realise that your original offer to check for family names was made quite some time ago and much has happened since then, however if you are still out there and willing and able, I wonder if you could tell me if there are any of the name of Dent, Agin (Agen), Hetherington, or Kitchin (Kitchen) on the list of watchmakers. I know that the name of Dent has some significant watchmaking history, but am seeking to establish whether there was any connection to Coventry, particularly prior to 1850s.
Many thanks for your offer.

That's a shame, I noticed she was talking about her 3rd great grandfather Charles Beauchamp and realised we must be related. Was going to send a message. I have Coventry watchmaking Beauchamp & Windsors in my tree.
