Title: Dellers Summer Cafe - Paignton
Post by: Devon Maid on Friday 13 July 07 10:34 BST (UK)
Since becoming interested in my Family History I have become aware of the buildings they may have visited or lived in. I have a picture in a book of Dellers Summer Cafe in Paignton. Does anyone know if the building still exist and if so where is it located.

Dear Sue
I am also interested in the reply to your question.  My grandfather Samuel Clift lived at 3, Dellars Cottages, Paignton in 1915.  Someone suggested that the Dellars owned the cafe and the cottages.

The Dellers were quite an important family in Paignton (I live in Paignton) . Sadly the cafe is no longer. It used to be down the Torbay Road near the Picture Palace not far from the seafront. It was demolished in 1965, but it still spoken of fondly by the older residents as where they used to have afternoon tea.   It was quite a big building.

I haven't heard of Dellars Cottages, (but I'm an incomer - only been here for 11 years)  I will ask about it in work next week.  My Boss knows a lot about Paignton.

Hi Daisy

I have two photographs of Dellers Cafe's in Paignton. I think that the one you are referring to in Torbay Road is not the same as the Summer Cafe as they look to be completely different buildings. My summer cafe picture is part of the Francis Frith collection and is in amongst photographs of the seafront area. I just wondered if the building is still there but being used for something else. I had my eye on the Inn on the Green area but it is not the Inn on the Green but maybe it is the building next to it. In my picture looking at the front of the building there is a road to the left, on the right hand side is a Hotel. The summer cafe had a sort of "Spanish Influence" to it . I used to live in Plymouth and Paignton was on the "Charabanc" outing circuit and it was to Dellers that lunch which in the 1950's was a main meal was served.

Hi Sue

I did ask at work but I'm afraid my employer only remembers the one I mentioned, he did suggest that it was perhaps the back view as it backs onto a small park.  However I had a look at the Francis Frith one you menttioned and looked at a Paignton Godfrey Map 1901 , I think you are correct and they must have had a second cafe along the seafront.   It is not mentioned on the map but there is an Esplanade Hotel and between that on the right and Garfield Road on the left is where it may be. Will go past tomorrow, I'm curious now.

I am going to the library tomorrow and will look at the local Kellys etc there, someone local must know.

Mog

Will try find out about Dellars Cottages at library tomorrow.

Failing evberything else I'm going to my local FHS meeting Friday.

Watch this space.

This has me intrigued- I'm sure it was on the seafront! I've searched all my books at home and whilst there is a photo it doesn't say where it was, the earliest Kellys Directory I have is 1955 and its not listed in that.
If nobody can come up with the answer try contacting the Herald Express newspaper in Torquay and ask them to print a letter from you asking about it. Website http://www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk/

I found Dellers Summer Cafe in the Kellys for 1930 & 1936, it wasn't in the 1926 one though.  It just gave the address as Esplanade Paignton, but I found out that the Esplanade Hotel was situated where the Inn on the Green is now and Dellers Cafe was on its left on the corner of Garfield Road where the Lighthouse Pub is now. It is a nightclub/sports Bar.

Very annoyingly my son just came past, saw my picture of Dellers Summer Cafe and said ' That looks like the Lighthouse!'    The low wall and the right hand side(as you look at it) of the building still remain!  If only I'd of thought to ask him!

Dellers seem to have been a very prominant family owning the well known Dellers Cafe in Torbay Road at numbers 18-24 corner of Queens Park Road.  Also 1926 Pharmacies at 5 Palace Avenue and 8 Torbay Road and in 1935 a Confectioners 14 Torbay Road, pharmacies 11 Palace Ave and 8 Torbay Rd.   They also used to own the large building in Palace Avenue as Dellers Supply Stores (now Rossiters) and shops in Winner Street.

Mog
Dellers Cottages were in Winner Street which used to be 'the old town'.  In the 1948 Kellys I found them in there were just numbers 1 & 3.  I have some old maps of Winner Street area at work and I will try to pinpoint their exact location.  Next time I'm in library I will look at Kellys nearest to 1915 and look at residents for your Grandfather's name. I hadn't taken the details with me unfortunately.  If you are unfamiliar with Paignton you could look on a Google map and see where it is in relation to the town.

Daisy, you are a star. I thought it was on the seafront.

I've also found that Dellers had a cafe in Exeter- see

and possibly one in Taunton

Thanks Terry for link.

I have become quite interested in them during my 'quest'. I had noticed in one of the directories they had been bought by Chards.  I wonder what happened to the Deller family?  Its not a name I have particularly noticed locally.

Thank you for all the information on The Dellers and the Summer Cafe. I will have a look at "The Lighthouse" when I am next in Paignton. Do you know what stands on the site of the other Dellers Cafe. It's intriguing, I wonder why they sold up. I didn't know they had so many other shops etc.

I did try the internet for information but nothing was forthcoming.

One the site of the Dellers Cafe in Torbay Road is now a shop called 'This Is It' it sells toys, linen, toileteries etc, its quite big occupying 18-20.

Previously there was a remnant shop there about 30 years ago , a friend told me.

Hello Daisy

I think I know just where you mean. It sounds like the parade of shops on the left hand side going towards the railway bridge and just before you get to the older parade of shops next to the railway line. I can remember a remnant shop and even think i've been in the "This is it "shop. I will have to have a look when I next visit. I'm glad the other side of Torbay Road is more or less intact, still keeping it canopies. I always find myself looking upwards now to see what the rest of the buildings are like. It seems odd somehow that two of the most well known buildings were knocked down. It's probably a case of not appreciating what you've got till it's gone.

Many thanks for all your help.

Sue

Two very good books with pictures are rather unoriginally called 'Pictures Of Paignton' and 'Pictures Of Paignton 2' but they are good.

They have lots of pictures of places like Dellars, Woolies, Victoria Street, Hyde Road (before it was all shops), WInner Street, Palace Avenue, Oldway Mansion etc.

Also interesting for anyone interested in Oldway Mansion - the current exterior is not the original one and it was redone in a completely different style to update it but only on the three sides which you can see - if you go round the back you can see the original exterior.

Hello Eveyone, I know this is an old thread but hope someone might revisit it. My great grandfather (we think) William Albert Harvey, is listed as having lived a 3 Dellers Cottages in 1914, where his son William John was born to my great grandmother Beatrice White, who was known as "Bessie" at the time. Does anyone know anything about this family or any more about this address?

All the best, a rootschat newbie.

This is a spooky coincedence - my grandfather
Samuel Edward Vittery Clift
attested on 11th Dec 1915 from the very same address
3 Dellars Cottages
Your family must have lived there just before
Sorry - I know nothing about the house - but would love to

Thanks for the links of Dellars Cafe
Several different buildings on different sites I would suggest
But where are the cottages?
Was Dellar a family name in that area - and they rented cottages also?

Mog,

You won't believe it but I have the address for #3 Dellers Cottages. It was, at that time, 98 Winner Street, Paignton. The street has since been renumbered and it is now 78/81 Winner street. I'm now looking for where they moved next.

Here's link to the address on Google Maps (I've used TinyUrl to make is shorter): http://tinyurl.com/ckafva

Update on Dellers Summer Cafe. When I was in Paignton recently I noticed that the building looked somewhat tired and in need of some TLC. Maybe it was because it is Winter and a lot of buildings are closed at this time of year.

Hi everyone
I have been reading all the comments about the various "Dellers" establishments. In 1960 I had my wedding reception at "Dellers" in Taunton .The original  building is still there but is now a night club, it is situated at the end of the Bridge. I can also recall going to Exeter as a young child of about 10yrs.  and having high tea in the Dellers cafe, I am sure this building is still there but it is not a cafe.   Pure nostalgia
  Happy researching Heather

Congratulations on re opening Dellers. I thought it looked very sad the last time I saw it in the Autumn. Next time I am in Paignton I will look with interest.

It has not been easy to find any info. I have a photo in a book which is part of the Francis Frith collection. It has a sort of Mediterranean look about it. It can be viewed on the Francis Frith website. The other cafe, which closed in 1965 looked grand inside and out.  I remembered Dellers from my childhood in the 1950's when I lived in Plymouth. During the summer it was quite common to go on a coach trip for the day to Paignton. Lunch was always taken at Dellers.

The book with Dellers main cafe was printed by Nonsuch Publishing and obtained on a visit to Trago Mills.

Best Wishes

Sue

I'm a little late on this scene, but, looking at an old photo I saw the name "Dellars Paington". It's a photo of my late Father and his band (Jay Perryman & His Collegians Dance Band) who were playing for the Paignton Hospital Carnival Dance ( at Deller's Paington) 31st. August 1932. I know he also played regularly at the Seven Stars Hotel Totnes, they don't have records going that far back though! Thought I would just throw that into the mix, now I have to try and post this successfully!

What a shame that Deller's Cafe was torn down.

Dreadful isn't it. When you look around most of the other buildings seem to have survived. Dellers summer cafe also had a makeover and the last time I saw it, it was no longer white but was multicoloured.

What was Dellers Summer Cafe is almost in line with Paignton Pier. It has a Spanish look to it. For ages it was painted white but it was given a makeover a while back and now has a multicoloured look to it. I have attached a photo of what it looked like. I am sure you will easily find it. It is not far from the Inn on the Green. I'm pleased to hear about the Cinema, I think it must have been quite grand in its hey day.

Hi, I have just taken over the Lighthouse (Dellers as was in the 20's)
We are fascinated to know more of its history if anyone knows.
We are opening a cafe on the ground floor!
Mark

I grew up in Paignton, local there for close to 40 years. During in the late 80's, the Dellers building was called the Fiesta Inn, at least for a for a good 15 years (simply known as 'the Fiesta'). It was a combined pub / nightclub. Its decor was white and red. On the ground floor it had a full length bar, long red velvet lined seats and 3 pool tables. The wooden trellises you see on the old Dellers image still existed, they had hanging baskets with replica plastic ivy and floral arrangements suspended from them.

There was access to the balcony at the front for patrons (until people started throwing drinks over onto the terraces below). This balcony was later demolished leaving only one at the side.  It used to host local rock bands on the ground floor every weekend, they would perform on a makeshift stage, just behind the left front windows. The large double doors to the far right were an entrance to a small nightclub upstairs, this was open until the early hours. The place used to be absolutely packed, probably violating fire safety regulations. 200 people crammed inside, with queues outside.

Just behind those doors was a large wide staircase which led up to a dance floor, very dimly lit with glitter ball effects and disco lighting, small bar upstairs and tables situated around the floor. I remember this pub always seemed to be in competition with the spinning wheel (further down along the esplanade). It provided a source of employment for many a bar person I went to school with. I used to creep in at 15 years old with my first girlfriend, they never asked for ID and seldom used doormen.

After the decline in popularity of rock music during the mid 90's, they stopped hiring local bands to gig, eventually sold it.  New owners modernised it, added an extension, turned it into a sports themed bar (cannot remember the name). It adopted mint green,  blue and white decor. It was one of the first establishments to provide satellite TV and cover sports events, although bizarrely they were all from the states. It was odd - stuff like NASCAR racing and American football on multi-screens. They also played MTV on loop, which was all very new for pubs at the time. Giant bowling pins adorned its entrance at one stage, there was American sports memorabilia on the walls (baseball gloves etc). They introduced an entrance fee, that would be right around the time we stopped using it. These were still pre-internet days, just before the economic collapse of the high-street. I personally think that was the 'fiestas' final swan song.

It then swapped ownership yet again and became the lighthouse, sometime during the early 2000's I believe? In the economic climate of 2000, internet access becoming mainstream in homes, anti-smoking laws enforced, revellers habits changed, it did not profit. Personally never stepped foot in it again after the sports transformation. To my knowledge from the 70's onwards, this was always a pub / nightclub. I do not think any locals were any the wiser as to any historical relevance.

@Devon Maid - I am not sure if the new bypass will generate interest in the region again, or how the limited infrastructure is supposed to support all the new housing developments. It needs a miracle. I just know it is heartbreaking to walk around my hometown now, see the state of it. Lots of seaside resorts in the same boat. Eitherway I am moving counties this year, in pursuit of Cornish village life. Will always have fond memories of Torbay and wish her well.

That new bypass seems to be queued back to the River Teign viaduct every rush hour evening Monday to Friday once more, and this in the winter. Only 2 main roads in and out of Devon and there are frequently problems of one sort or another on them. We never travel far in the summer season because of the traffic and when you go to Paignton in the winter months it always looks so sad. Have always wondered why Dellers main restaurant was knocked down as it has left quite a blot on the landscape in that road. The existing buildings were probably magnificent in their heyday. I hope the canopies in the street are looked after, but all councils are short of money. Hope you enjoy cornish village life.
