Title: WAGNER of Sault Ste Marie and Owen Sound
Post by: Kazzaqld on Saturday 14 July 07 08:02 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I realised today I have never posted about my Canadian family in this forum so I thought I'd cast the net out there and see who might recognise them - you never know!

My great-great-grandparents Edward John WAGNER and Charlotte Alice nee FITCH emigrated to Canada in 1910 and 1911 respectively (great-great-grandma waited for the birth of her first granddaughter who later became my Grandma!).

They left my Great-grandma in England but took their sons, Ernest Ivor Charles (known as Ivor) and Stanley Vincent (known as Vincent) with them. One son Lawrence was in the British Army, and one Albert, had already emigrated to Canada.

Hi Kazz,

Here are a few in the 1911 Census:

40 Huron, Steelton, Algoma West, Ontario
District 55, Ward 1, Sub-district 17, Page 24

Albert E Wagner, M, Head, M, Oct 1883, 27, England, 1907, Tailor
Annie Wagner, F, Wife, M, Oct 1872, 38, Ontario
Edward J Wagner, M, Father, M, June 1863, 47, England, 1911, Tailor
Ivor Wagner, M, Lodger, S, Nov 1900, 10, England, 1911

Looks like Albert arrived in 1907 and Edward and son Ivor in 1911.  Charlotte and the other children must have arrived after the census which was dated June 1, 1911.

Hope that helps,

Nancy

Thank you Nancy,

I did know that some were on the 1911 census and some not! My grandma was born 8 May 1911 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, so I knew that her grandmother was still in England at that time.

But there were a few details there I hadn't noted down - have done so now!  :)

I appreciate your interest!

welcome to rootschat GusJr.
Karen I can see your Lawrence Bramleigh on the CWGC, but he has not been listed at the The Canadian Virtual War Memorial, ( You'll have to see that he gets his name on there) nor can I find his signups...

Hi JJ,

He was a career soldier in the British Royal Marines - he joined as a lad of 15 before his parents emigrated to Canada, so that's why he's not listed as part of a Canadian force.

Thank you for looking though!

Hi Gus,

I knew her as Auntie Bea - I did meet her once but I was only about 5 or 6 at the time.

She seemed like a really nice lady.

Hello Kazzaqld,
I have just read your post of your Canadian family while researching Lawrence Bramliegh Wagner. My interest is Sarah Lovell mother of your GGgrandmother and daughter to my GGgrandfather. If you are interested there is a record of Lawrence service in Find my Past, and I have a couple of photos of him.

Regards

Hi Kazzaqld,  I was born a Wagner.  My grandfather was Vincent Wagner of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. His mother was Alice Fitch married to John Edward Wagner.  Vincent was married to Katherine Tonner of the Sault.  Katherine had only one son Lawrence Stanley Wagner {my father}.  I am the eldest of three siblings born to Lawrence and my mother Patricia McDonald.  They separated in about 1951 and eventually divorced.  Anyhow it would be nice to chat at some point.  This is the first of my three posts so I can contact you directly.  My brothers are Dennis and Larry (deceased).  Will write more later.

Hello, I both have and am looking for any and all information that I can get my hands on about my family tree, which includes the Wagners mentioned here. My maternal grandfather is Lawrence Stanley Wagner, his uncle was Lawrence Bramleigh Wagner, and I have lots of information going up the Wagner side of things. I've found myself in Sault Ste. Marie for school, and discovered that my family had quite a bit of history here. I can send some info I have that my half-uncle (son of Lawrence Stanley) put together for his niece (?).

I would greatly appreciate any info, records, photos, documentation, etc you may have about anything related to the wagners. :)

I assume that the Vincent Wagner mentioned was Stanley Vincent Wagner. His wife was not Katherine, she was Catherine Bell Hutchison 1909-1981. Catherine was a daughter of Andrew Robb Tonner 1886-1967 and Margaret ( Maggie ) Hutchison 1887-1949.

Maggie was an elder sister of my granny Catherine ( you are in Scotland now )

The Bell in Catherine's name runs through the large Hutchison family ( like covid ). It comes from her grandfather Duncan Bell who was killed in an explosion in a mine in Wishaw in 1849, leaving his wife Mary ( Nicol ) 1818-1900 a pauper with 4 young daughters and a boy on the way whom she named Duncan after his dead father.

Incidentally, Mary remarried, and, after her second husband died, followed her sons by emigrating herself to US. She died in La Salle Illinois.
