Has anybody come across any german travelling musicians in the 1840's and 1850's. My great great grandfather was Johann Plitsch born 1828 in Germany. He settled in Newark, Notts and was listed on the 1851 census as being a travelling musician. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Louise

Hi louise, Try the Anglo-German family history society.
www.art-science.com/agfhs/
You can also find lots of interesting links regarding German immigrants.
I believe that the name you supplied (Plitsch)could be Prussian .
Regards, Chris.

Dear ChrisClare,
Is it possible that Johann was part of a travelling theatre or fair ?? It may be worth browsing some of the Links which refer to the travelling community.

I remember seeing some German musicians in Lewes, Sussex in the 1851 census... I'll have to dig it out...

Hi Louise,
we talked about your Plitsch Family, a while ago, on GenesReunited .
Since then I have found another useful site: http://www.geneanet.org/
This seems to be an index to GEDCOM sites
Entering Plitsch here I got 6 hits, from 3 contributors.
Try going to these links and see if you can see any recognisable names. Maybe someone else is also researching your Plitsch family.
Hope this helps.

My great great great grandfather b. 1829 also came to England from Prussia as a travelling clarinetist with the Prinz Ruprecht Band. He married an English girl and never went home!

Hi Louise,
I wonder if you ever found anything about the German travelling musicians? I also have a great great grandfather born 1828 in what was then Prussia and was recorded as being a travelling musician. Name John (Johannes) Filing. Arrived and settled in Grantham, Lincolnshire. My cousin found that some of the sons went on to work at a travelling fair in England. I'd love to know more about the musicians.
Best,
Zi

I can't help you directly, but travelling musicians in Grantham reminds me of an earlier thread. If you enter "musicians Grantham" (without quotes) in the forum's search box you should be able to find it.
In particular there was a thread in 2007 on a George Filing - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=264731.0
The person who asked the original question was active here 2-3 months ago, but note that one of the contributors to the thread has since died.

Thank you for your reply!
The thread was very useful - lead me right to John Filing! My grandpa's right, there are not many Filings in the UK.
Much gratitude to those that have shared and are no longer here and those still sharing,
Zi
