Title: NORTHWICH
Post by: bjh1225 on Thursday 19 July 07 04:39 BST (UK)
Trying in vain to find any record of a James CLARKE,  hay dealer,  in Cheshire before 1853,
He had a son named Thomas Clarke bc 1821 in Northwich.   I have run their names on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and do not come up with any possibility.     Thomas m. Alice (Croft) Freeman in Liverpool on 26 Sept 1853.   He died in Lancashire in 1864.     There is one listing for a Thomas Clarke b 1824 Northwich who m.  Ann McNaight.  Does anyone recognize this couple ?

Any data or advise will truly be appreciated,

Regards,  Bettye

Hi Bettye
On the 1861 census Thomas & Alice Clarke are ennumerated (along with other children) with a daughter Elizabeth Clarke aged 16 b.Liverpool. It looks to me that possibly Thomas had been married previously, daughter Elizabeth being born c.1845 in Liverpool to a first wife.
Might be worth investigating Ann McNaight.

Hi Bettye,
I have just googled Thomas Clarke of Northwich and came across your rootschat.
I am searching for the Clarke Family and some of the information refers to my Family too!!
I don't know how to get in touch with you as this is the first time  that I have used Rootschat.
Any contact from you would be appreciated.

Hi Annielaurie and welcome to Rootschat!

Bettye was last online in December 2010 - hopefully she will see this message and respond.  When you have made a couple more posts you will be able to send her a personal message - see below:

You can do this by posting a couple more times on this thread.

Hope this helps,

Jean

Hi Jean,
Thank you so much for your reply and warm welcome.
I am only new at this online genealogy so I hope everyone will understand if I am a bit slow at first.
I have done a lot of research in the past and have hit a brick wall with the Clarke side of my Family tree and was delighted to get a glimmer of hope that could move my research on.

I do hope Bettye sees this post.
Regards

Hi Annielaurie,

I've sent a message to Bettye, so hopefully she will return to this thread.

Meanwhile, if you have any specific queries that we may be able to help with why not start your own thread....  :)

If you need any help with any Garston connections, let me know....I live there...and my dad worked in the Laundry there..I would be interested to know what that address was...and I presume Alice would have been born Bickerstaffe - written Bickersteth
William Freeman married Alice Croft in 1844 in Liverpool

Thank you all for all that information....wow
It came as a bit of a surprise to me as my Great Grandfather is the Edwin Clarke mentioned and I could not find any record of his birth or baptism anywhere and now I know  that he was born Freeman and not Clarke it all makes sense.

I will now try to find his birth or baptism under the name of Freeman.Edwins marriage certificate shows his Father as Thomas  Clarke so  I am now going to try the Freeman connection which I think is the blood line that I should be following.....you can tell I am new at this rootschat but I am amazed at the wonderful and knowledgable people out there who are willing to help.
Thank you all so much.

I am glad I could help :)
I wouldnt jump to conclusions yet as to Edwins Father as he may have been illegitimate and Thomas Clark his Father. They may have Married later.
Firstly we need to find when William Freeman died.
I'll see what else I can find tonight and then if unsuccessful you may need the Birth Cert of Edwin.

Hi Allan,
The reason I didnt put the address is I couldnt make it out;
Out Lane, Pith Lane, Push Lane, Beck Lane??? Anyhow next Street is Island Farm Lane.

Trish :)

Hi Allan,
Thank you for your kind offer to help. I did get in touch with the local History Society by you for the local churches and have been through all the baptisms in the area under the name of Edwin Clarke and drew a blank so now I know why....He was born as Edwin Freeman!!

I have only been on Rootschat for just over a day and look at the results...absolutely wonderful.Thank you.

Hi Trish,Hi Allan,

Thank you both for your previous advice.
I have now got Edwin Freemans birth cert and it shows Mother as Alice Freeman and no mention of a maiden name and no mention of a Father either.

I suppose he must have been illegitimate as it would have shown Alice's Husband William Freeman as Father(deceased) on the birth cert.
Why do you think there is no mention of her maiden name on cert when she was married to William Freeman in 1844?
The only death I could find for a William Freeman was in 1849!!!
Any help or advice would be appreciated.Thank you.

Hiya Annielaurie....does it say Wavertree on Edwins Birth Certificate ?

allan
added...it`s OK...I have found him...yes he was born in Garston , so the birth cert should say registered Wavertree ...well...I say that , my g grandfathers did b 1877...1844 I am not so sure
on the 1881 census he is a Butcher with wife Annie and 5 children...I presume you have this ?...he kept the name Clarke
allan
added again ...wife was Ann Roberts ...and they married in St Peter ,Liverpool

Hi Allan
Yes it does say  Edwin was registered in Wavertree .Born 10th May 1848 Out lane Garston. It looks like 4 am under date and above address but couldnt find any trace of a twin so might be something else like house /cottage number.
Just dont know how to take this back further...but I am waiting for marriage cert of His Mother Alice nee Croft and William Freeman.
How do I start a new thread as all this is under Northwich and it might not have anything to do with Thomas Clarke of Northwich??Also the only way I can get into Rootschat is via googleing thomas clarke etc....what am  I doing wrong please??

Hi Annielaurie and Allan,

I've had a look through the thread and can't see an obvious place to split it - also it was started by someone else.

I think it would be better to start a new thread on the Lancashire lookup requests board - link is here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,233.0.html

Just click on the "New Topic" button and put what information you are looking for about Edwin and his family.  Post what you know and I'm sure people will be able to help you out.  You could also post a link to this thread - I'll keep an eye out for the thread appearing so if you aren't sure how to do it I can do it for you.

Jean

Hi Bettye,
I have hit a brick wall with the Clarke Family in Northwich...have you had any luck with finding James Clark described as Haydealer on my Greatgrandparents marriage certificate in September 1853.
My maiden name was Clarke with an 'e' and I would love to find out more.
It doesn't help that the spelling changes does it??.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Kind Regards
Ann Lambert nee Clarke
