Hello to all, hope that you are all well. Searching for the late Mathew McElroy convict ancestors he came out to Australia aboard the vessel Chapman in 1817. He married a Sarah McGoveran in the N.S.W. Colony on the 2nd March 1824 by the late Rev. Thierry at St. Mary's Church Sydney. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

There are three items required when searching for Irish ancestors.
1. Denomination.
2. Parish.
3. Townland.
You'll have to rely on Church records as Michael was born prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards. Have a look at the thread headed "Advice on how to find your ancestor's home" on the Ireland general board.

Hello Christopher, thanks for your reply to my message it is always so greatly appreciated. I know that Matthew was Catholic, born 1794 Native place Dundalk Louth Co, a ploughman, labourer by trade. He worked on the Richmond Roads in N.S.W. Sydney, also dealt with wine in a Public House Liverpool N.S.W. Once again thanks for your advice.

Hi,
The National Library of Ireland put images from Irish Catholic registers on their website last July.
Dundalk baptisms from 1794 are included, though the records seem to go back only a couple of years before that.
Good luck !
