Title: PICKETT - Witney, Cogges, Southleigh, Newland
Post by: susanmlean on Sunday 29 July 07 09:19 BST (UK)
Hello
Is anyone else researching PICKETT in Witney, Southleigh, Coggs, Newland?

I can't find census records for my Picketts in the 1861 or 1871 censuses. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My great grand parent William Pickett born 17 Jul 1831 according to a family bible. He emigrated to NZ in 1875. He appears on the 1851 census with his family as 19 yrs born in Cogges, living in Newland, Cogges; on the 1841 as 8 yrs living Shaws Alley, Witney.  He had 3 children to Louisa (unknown maiden name) She died 30 Apr 1872 Corn St, Witney aged 25. I can't locate a marriage record for them. They had 3 children William C Pickett b. 19 Sep 1861, Louisa (my grt grandmother) born Nov 1863, Elizabeth Pickett b. abt 1868, Clara Pickett who died aged 5 17 Nov 1872 at Corn St Witney.  He  married Eliza Cooper formerly Ham 17 Jun 1873 in Witney. They produced Alice Maud Pickett b Corn st, Witney 12 July 1874 before coming to NZ and having more children.
I've sent away for the birth cert for Harriet Louisa Pickett born 1863 in the hope that she is the right Louisa Pickett so that I can find out who her mother really was.
The information on the IGI is unhelpful and wrong.
I've tried searching the censuses using variants such as Picket/Puckett/Rickett etc.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Sue

Have you any idea of William's parents? I have found a William Pickett bapt20/10/1833  at Eynsham.  Eymsham is very close to Southleigh Witney and Cogges.
The parents of this William are John Pickett and Susannah. Susannah maiden name was Gardner.
Let me know if this is him and I will look furthur for you.

Hi
Thanks for your response :- )
I found William (b1831) in the 1841 (Shaw Alley, Witney) & 1851 (Newland, Cogges)censuses living with who I'm fairly sure were his parents  William (b. abt 1807 in Southleigh, & Rachel Pickett.
So I think the William born 20/10/1833 must be another William Pickett. I guess they must be related but as yet I'm not sure how.
Regards
Sue

Hi Sue are you still looking for information about the Pickett family line? Maybe not after 5 years

I am on a similar path with an interest in a daughter born to William Pickets 3rd marriage Alice Maude Pickett b1874 her mother was Eliza Hamm, Eliza had a previous marriage to a John Cooper, Eliza Cooper and William Pickett married abt 1872.

Re your comment about the UK Census did you look under Pickell? there is a family under this name in the 1871 Census civil parish of Witney; William Pickell 39 Head, Louisa 24 Wife, William son 9, Louisa dau 7, Clara Ann dau 4, Elizabeth dau 3.

I mention above I believe William had 3 marriages

1 Phoebe Douglas b abt 1838 married 1860 record on FreeBDM, William and Phoebe had 2 children WIlliam & Louisa. Phoebe died in June Q 1865.
2. Louisa Douglas (not confirmed) I was unable to locate a marriage between William and Louisa Douglas I do believe that Louisa was the younger sister of Phoebe Douglas and was born about 1847 this is only speculation on my part! Louisa and William had 2 children Clara Ann and Elizabeth

If the Census record in 1871 is in fact this family then the timeline certainly fits it is apparent that some tragedy struck the family in 1872 with the deaths of Louisa, Clara Ann and Elizabeth I am looking for this information!

3. Elizabeth Cooper nee Hamm married 1872 record on freeBDM, William and Eliza had one child Alice Maud born 1874 in the UK the family them emigrated to NZ in Dec 1874 from Portsmouth on the Baron Aberdare arriving Auck NZ March 1875. The passenger mainfest I have viewed showed the Prickett family (another spelling varient) William 43, Eliza 30, Louisa 11, Alice Maude 4; there was no sign of the son William who would have been aged 13 from other research I know he came to NZ as well. There were 7 children born in NZ to Eliza and William.

If you have moved forward and found your information and wish to collaborate please respond as I still have many unanswered queries!

I should have also added Rachel is not listed in the baptisms for St Bartholomew so she may not have been baptised or it was done elsewhere.

Looking for a baptism at St James Church, Southleigh and then of course parents for William I started in 1780 and there is a large number of PRICKETT and PICKETT entered.

There are 2 possibilities for William as the only 2 listed between 1780 and 1827.

William PICKETT baptised on 25 Nov 1787 s o Joseph and Martha

or

William PICKETT born 30 Nov 1804 baptised 9 Dec 1804 s o Thomas and Hannah ( his Mum who was a witness at his wedding?)

Hi Les
Wow! Another marriage! I didn't have the Sara Ashton one!
I've send you a message with my email address. I'm happy to share what I have. I've also done an autosomal dna test - but that's not helping me with my Picketts as yet.
When we were in England a few years ago we stopped briefly in Witney for a look around and visited the little museum. Apart from being told that the Picketts lived in a pretty dire slum area I didn't get much more.
I retire at the end of the year, so hopefully I'll have more time to unravel the past.
Regards
Sue

Hello Sue.....Lovely surprise to get your reply....I have about 70 pages (all handwritten) on the Pickett family...The only problem is,,how do I get it to you??? You said you'd sent your email address to me but ROOTS-CHAT cancelled it out and said no personal messages allowed...Surely if it's involving the Pickett family tree that's not personal?? It's to do with the topic under discussion....This may get rejected as well in that case....Are you with Ancestry??? We could do Family tree communication through there....Anyhow for a try here's my email address...I have no problems at all about this being published on any site to do with Family Trees....Regards...LES.

Hello Oxfordshire Cockney,

We do not allow the publishing of peoples emails on RootsChat because this is how spammers collect peoples details to sent spam. Once people are sent spam the have a habit of then changing email so that means you become uncontactable.

The safe option is to send these details by personal message (PM) any member can do this so long as they have made a couple of posts, when you tried it would not allow you to do so because you had only made 1 post.

Regards

Sarah

Hi everyone
I Googled my ancestor Susan Jane Pickett from Witney, Southleigh, Oxfordshire and came across this forum discussion.  I think perhaps your line might be cousins to my line?  Susan's father was Richard Pickett (1806-1886) and Susan herself was born 1859 and came to Sydney in 1886. I haven't researched Richard Pickett's siblings and parents as yet, so I'd be interested in any comments you have and to know if Richard and William Pickett were cousins.  I have also been trying to discover why Susan came out to Australia on her own. She became my great-great-grandmother :-)

Good morning to you from a beautiful sunny frosty Oxfordshire...Reference your PICKETT family...I am part way through a write up of the PICKETT/HARRIS family tree...I have started entering the HARRIS portion onto Ancestry UK...The PICKETT family are still being hand written and a bit of early research to do from Oxfordshire Parish Records..RICHARD PICKETT (1806-1886),, I have his family back to 1685..RICHARD and WILLIAM (1807) were brothers..WILLIAM is the 3X great grandfather of my nephew in law who's tree I'm doing at present...If you would like some more info ,,only to glad to assist...Contact me via Ancestry on WATERS/SALMON/MERRY/BUSBY family tree...Look for HENRY CHARLES WATERS (1869)...  So far I have got about 75/80 pages of written text on the PICKETT family...Your very welcome to what ever you need...Looking forward very much indeed for your reply...Regards....LES  (the Oxfordshire Cockney)....
