I am looking for any information on the Pinder Oaks Inn in Barnsley. My 2 x Gt Grandparents were living there between the 1871 amd 1881 census.
-
hiya
i've just phoned the mum in law up to find out where the pinder oaks inn / hotel used to be and she told me it was knocked down years ago. i have some books with old photos of barnsley streets etc and allthough the pinder oaks hotel is mentioned there isn't a photo. it has a list of names from 1872 to 1972 of the people who ran it and the name listed for the years 1872 to 1883 is a john harper and according to the census he was a brickmaker ??
regards carolanne

Hello Carolanne
Thank you so much for the information re Pinder Oaks Inn. My relative is John Harper and he was a brickmaker for many years. However on the 1871 census his occupation was given as an Innkeeper and his address was Pinder Oaks Hotel. Maybe his wife Elizabeth ran the hotel later on. I now know that the family were still there up to 1883.
Thanks once again

Hi CarolAnne,
In the books that you mention there is a photograph
of the Pindar Oaks. Although it says in the description Pindar Oaks Hotel
the photo shows it as just "Pindar Oaks"
Presuming that you are referring to Barnsley Streets by E.G.Tasker:-
Volume 7 Page 75 has the photo.
Tomkin ;D ;D ;D

hya tomkin
the books i have are a new edition from the collection of e g tasker and there are only 4 books this time.

Hi CarolAnne,
I've got a couple missing from the original set. ( I will lend them out ::) ::) ::))
I wondered if the new set were the same as the old ones.
Obviously there are differences.

My 5x great grandfather, Charles Tee purchased the Pinder Oaks estate, ni Barnley, in 1855 and lived there with his family.
I've been trying to locate a picture for years now so if anybody could help me I'd be really grateful. I've tried all the usual suspects, google, etc, but to no avail.
Apparently, Pinder Oaks was a maternity home 1921-the mid 1900s when it became a chest clinic. I understand that it is no longer standing.
Kind regards
Jo

Hi Jo,
I've looked through my "bits and pieces" but I can't find
the photo that you are after. You could try the Barnsley FHS.
They may have something. This is from them and mentions your
relative. From a quick look there were quite a few places that were called
Pindar Oaks. This reference mentions him living at Worsborough.
Could your Pindar Oaks be a differrent one to the Hospital ??.
If it is the hospital one then I would contact the NHS in Barnsley. They
will have photo's of the hospitals etc in Barnsley although they are
probably stored at Sheffield Archives. It's just a case of finding the correct
people to contact.

Hi Jo
I am trying to send you a copy of The Pindar Oaks Inn in Barnsley where my Ancestors lived between 1871 and 1883. Not sure if this helps you at all.

As regards Charles Tee, no doubt you are aware of this event:
Births, Deaths, Marriages and Obituaries .
The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent Saturday, October 26, 1878; pg. 12; from 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.
HODGETTS October 12, at Bridlington Quay, Rebecca, widow of Thomas HODGETTS, and daughter of the late Charles TEE, of Pinder Oaks, Barnsley, aged 56.
Quite a lot about Charles Tee is the above newspaper-he was involved in a railway accident in 1845, and most of his children's marriages are mentioned.

Thank you, I had not spent any great time researching Rebecca so what you posted was of great interest. Please could you tel me how I could gain access to these British Library Newspapers, is it a subscription based service?
Peramar, many thanks for the picture. It all helps in building up a picture of the area and is much appreciated.
Kind regards
Jo

I know this is a very old thread so you may not pick it up. Researching my family my Great Great Uncle Charles Baker was a boarder there on the 1871 census. His occupation was a Carter so whether or not it was an overnight stop of he lived there I don't know

Penny

If he was a carter I would guess he was staying there for the night.
They didn't work 9 to 5 in those days ;D ;D ;D ;D

were the owners of the hotel your ancestors?

Hi - John Harper was my Great Uncle x2 born 1818 He was the innkeeper at Pindar Oaks (162 Doncaster Rd) in 1871 and 1881 and he died in 1884 as did his wife Elizabeth. On the 1861 census he is listed as a coal miner.
Peramar have we been in contact before as there seems to be a connection here ??
All the best. Patvp

I was born in Pindar Oaks Hospital in 1955.
My great grandfather John Higham lived at various houses at Pindar Oaks cottages.
In the 1911 census he is listed at no.1 which is a shop and his daughter Edith is a grocer/dealer. I have tried everywhere for a photo of the shop to no avail.....unless someone knows better?
Frank
-
what was the daughters name at the time?.
Who owned the shop at the time.
what name did the shop trade under?
-
Hi
She was called Edith Higham.
It was prob owned by her father John Higham a building contractor.
Not sure what the trading name was.
Thanks
-
Some shops in those days were just the front room of the house they lived in.

Happy new year Penny.
You will notice that there are marks across the picture. I assume this is because you may be
able to buy the photo when the site is up and running.
It's a new site which I only came across today.

Thank you so much for the new photo of the 'Pindar Oaks Inn'. My 2 Gt Grandparents and their family were living there at the time of the 1871 census -John Harper Inn Keeper in 1871 and John Harper Tile and Brick maker in the 1881 census. It's great to have a photo of the inn although the appearance must have changed since 171/1881.
Thanks again. I look forward to getting a proper photo of it when it is available.

Hi Penny
I guess we will never know that answer as to whether he was a long stay boarder or just happened to be passing through at the time of the census. But our ancestors definitely knew each other didn't they?
Peramar
-
certainly did Peramar. My feeling is he was passing through, the family trade was as Carriers / Carters (ie haulage?) mainly coal.
Wonder what they'd make of us speaking to each other over the ether???? Happy hunting

Trying to find the name of the landlord who ran the Pindar oakes hotel Barnsley in 1967
-
Contact the relevant County Archives they will have the licensing info, you might also find something in the newspapers which will be help at the relevant main library, too recent for the British Newspaper Archives website as most of their on line records only go up to mid 1950s
-
the person who owns this site seems to have a lot of info about it http://barnsleyhistorian.blogspot.com/2017/06/the-moorhouse-family-and-pindar-oaks.html

John C. Hayes 1961/67
Harry Palmer 1967/72

Incase you are still looking for information, when the pub blew up, it was on calendar news. They filmed on location and did a piece on the history of it. There may be some of this available somewhere and it may offer links to other information for you.
