Title: Advice about digital cameras please
Post by: kerryb on Thursday 02 August 07 18:32 BST (UK)
Hi

I'm looking to replace my digital camera in the next month or so and would appreciate some advice from camera owners.

I currently have a Fuji Finepix 6900 zoom which is a good camera although I have never felt that comfortable with it and I desperately need image stabilisation which seems to be the latest great thing.  I've always had problems with blurry pictures since I was a child with my first film camera.

I'm not after a SLR, I want a super zoom, I'm an enthusiast and want to take macro shots of flowers and insects and a good zoom in order to take pictures of birds, generally in my garden on the feeder.

A friend of mine has the Nikon coopix 8800 which I like the look of but it has been discontinued but that is the sort of thing I'm looking for a high optical zoom and about 8 - 10 mega pixels.

Does anyone have any advice or a camera like that they love or - hate!

Thanks

Kerry

I'm very happy with my coolpix S10, but it only goes to 6 meg so it might not suit.
The optical zoom is excellent and the rotating back means I can use it like my old waist level twin lens. It also has image stabilisation.

Hi

The Canon 400 EOS is probably one of the best:

Hi Peter

I'll have a look at that one but what is waist level twin lens??

Gnu

It was really a super zoom I was after not a SLR although that one's not a bad price! 8)

Now I'm feeling really ancient!  :'(
A twin lens reflex camera was one in which you looked down into the viewfinder.
Then the taking lens was beneath the viewing lens. It meant that the camera was used at waist level and made it extremely useful for close-ups. One drawback was that the image was reversed in the viewfinder.
Two examples were the Rolleiflex and the Rolleicord.

Hi Kerry

Because it's an SLR, you can buy other lenses for it AND you'll be able to frame the shot in the lens and be able to see what your photo will look like before you shoot. This is never satisfactory with non-SLRs, however good.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ5 which I'm well pleased with - it has a great 12x optical, 48x digital zoom, is very lightweight and small by comparison with the EOS. It's now been replaced by the FZ7 which is similar http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz7/page14.asp

We have just got the Fugi FinePix S5700. You could just consider the same manufacturer

Hi Gnu

That's the bit I don't fancy, having to change lens, I'm bound to get dust in them, although I do take your point about framing the shot.

Hi Kerry

Mine is a fuji S5600 and I'm no professional but i have produced some quality pictures with this camera, I even take the shots when my sons soccer team plays and have been really impressed with the results.
Fuji is definitely a descent brand.

I've agree, I've had some brilliant pictures with my current Fuji camera, the tulip avatar was a recent one.  They seem to have a good reputation.

I shall have to check out whether their latest has the image stabilisation which would help me no end!!!

   Hi Kerry,

You didn't mention the Price that you were willing to pay!

I have just purchased an 18X  Optical Zoom NON SLR Olympus.
I can supposedly achieve 100X zoom by also using the digital interpolation
Like most modern cameras it has Macro & super Macro mode and
          Digital Image stabilisation.

Forget Digital Zoom.  You achieve the same results by "blowing Up " the picture
      on your computer software.

Still messing with it so I can't say how good it is.

That's a very nice looking camera, Tomkin. How much did it cost? Have you got any images from it that you can post yet? You must have even more cameras than I have  8)

Kerry, if you are wanting close up of birds, the most important thing is depth of field/focus, camera shake. and dust/smudge free lens.

PS - I see it can be bought for £250-£350  :)

Hi Tomkin

I'm in the pleasurable position of being a bit free with the money.  Basically to cut a long story short I've been saving for a life assurance savings plan for 15 years £35 a month, it matures next month and whilst I am going to be sensible and pay off most of it on my mortgage I am going to buy two things for myself that I desire - a flat screen monitor for my computer and a new camera  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

What name and number is the camera?  I bought a magazine this morning that had quite a good review for a new Olympus and I quite liked the sound of it.

Ooh Gadget you snuck in there!

Yes camera shake is one of my priority, I've always had a wonderful camera shake!!!!!  A lot of the new camera's have image stabilisation now which is a must for me.

Pete's been trying to go through the depth of field/focus thing again with me this morning, I have a mental block but I think I'm beginning to understand it.

Aperture - the bigger the number, the smaller the aperture but why?  Why couldn't they have a small number = a small aperture, I'd get it then! ::) ::) ::) ::)

While we are on the subject what is ISO?

The Olympus I was looking at and liked the look of - SP -550 UZ had a good rating except that there is a lot of noise at high ISO ie 400 and 800.

But I don't know what ISO is or why I would need a high one??

Kerry  ::)
Title: Re: Advice about digital cameras please
Post by: Gadget on Saturday 04 August 07 15:17 BST (UK)
ISO is film rating -  fine- coarse grain in the old days of emulsion coated film.  The lower the rating the finer the grain*. It can be used to vary the shutter speed in various lighting conditions .

Seriously the spuggy is the exact sort of picture I want to take.  We had some Siskins visit the garden last year and I took some pictures from the bedroom window, they were probably only 15 foot away but still little specs, I want to zoom in and get a better picture without disturbing them by having to open the back door!

My magazine quotes it at £300 which is a nice price!!!  :)

I don't think that the powers that be would worry about reduction in size for this purpose. It's difficult to judge the quality of the images produced if you've had to compress them  :(

  Hi Kerry,

I got it for £259.89p  including Next day delivery.

(  alright!  how was I to Know there was a postal strike the next day ??? ??? ???)

Also included was a 1GB memory card.

I would read the reviews on this and other cameras. they all have good & bad points.
The menu system on this camera is confusing unless you know something about cameras
or unless you are willing to spend a lot of time learning.

I'll have another look at some of the simpler cameras that I was going to buy to
supplement my old Fuji and let you know.

    Hi Kerry,

I would agree. Personally I wouldn't have bought this if I'd known that Fuji were
bringing out an 18x zoom shortly, Which strangely looks very much like the Olympus.  Ah well.

The good thing about digital is that you can take loads of pictures and select the one
      good one that you managed to take ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The old film cameras taught you how to take pictures.

Hi Barbara

I think I have

I'm going for a new camera, only been out for a month or so - the Canon Powershot S5 IS.  It has image stabilisation.  The reviews I have read have all been good and though it only has 12x zoom compared to some, ie the one Tomkin was talking about has 18x zoom, I think it does everything I want it to do.

Thanks, Kerry, another one to mull over   ???

It's the rather bewildering array that baffles me, I don't want anything too technical, but one that I can use to take good nature closeups outside as well as my ever-moving grandson without too much camera-shake (my fault) - so the image stabiliser sounds a very good idea..   my brother suggested the Canon Powershot G7 but I think it's a bit too clever for me

Thankyou, Barbara

Hi Kerry,

I also looked at this camera but it had only just come out and the reviews were
not very decisive. As I said you can't really go wrong as most of them have good and bad
points.   If I were you I would hotfoot it to a good camera store and ask to have a look at
all of them and see how easy they are to operate.
( then go on the internet and see if you can get it cheaper :o :o :o)
Give the saleman some Welly Gel and find out if the camera does  what you want.

This is exactly it Tomkin, I would a camera I like, read a good review, read a bad review, get confused, and so on.  In the end quite a lot of subjective and down to personal choice, ie cons that you can put up with and those you can't.

Apparently one of the cons for this one is that it doesn't have file format in RAW - that doesn't bother me!

Kerry  ;D
Title: Re: Advice about digital cameras please
Post by: tomkin on Wednesday 08 August 07 18:58 BST (UK)

   Hi Kerry,

I agree with you lass. It's the same when you are buying any electronic
equipment. Some of the cheaper rubbish you can disregard but when you are looking
at the top equipment it all comes down to personal preference.
With a lady with small hands I would see if the camera handles well and feels
comfortable. Fortunately most cameras today are more compact.
One tip when I look at something new is to look at the forums and look at the comments
of people who have bought and used the item.
You can still get totally confused though so beware ;D ;D ;D ;D
I would agree with you about the RAW  mode though. It's only now that the memory
cards have increased in  capacity that I would be tempted to switch it on.

        Happy Snappy,
                                      Tomkin.
P.S and what really annoys me is that Fuji is bringing out an 18X zoom next month and
I can't find out what CCD sensor it's using and I suppose it will be ages before we see
any reviews and find out if it's any good and I like Fuji and......pause for breath....  I'm going
to get my dinner ready ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: Advice about digital cameras please

I've only ever used RAW a few times - not really worth it in MHO.
A couple of years ago brother in law took all his (canon) holiday snaps in Raw and then found that the driver for his Mac wouldn't read them. CDs later, I converted them and he got them back as uncompressed jpgs.

    SSSSshhhhh....... ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I sometimes go to the shop, tell them the price on the internet and see if they can match it.
If it's just a few quid difference then I would buy from the shop. If anything goes wrong
at least you can drag the salesman over the counter. If you are buying from the Net make
sure you find out about the firms return of faulty goods Policy.

If you can, have a look at the Panasonic Lumix DMD T23.
Thats got a 10X zoom I think.  Don't ask me why but theres something about it that makes me

I would agree with Meles but it's horses for courses. I buy virtually everything
on the Internet and get some amazing bargains.( I've always found Jessops
expensive even on the internet. )   Try Amazon.co.uk they are usually very
reliable and decent on price but you can still find things cheaper than them. It's just
that you have to be very, very careful about security and also what happens
     if the goods are faulty.

Why doesn't Tomkin have a Canon Camera? I have a Canon camera but Epson and HP printers and an Epson scanner  :-\

Morning Gadget

You may have to wait a while for some proof.  I'm reading the manual this time.  Having a few problems downloading pictures to the computer.  I seem to remember the same problem with my last computer something to do with the version of XP or something.  I've ordered a card reader.  I used one to download my first pictures at work yesterday with no problem at all.

Also 11pm on a Friday night is not the best time to try and sort out these problems  ::) ::) ::)

A card reader is the best way to go, Kerry - I didn't even bother to load the canon software with OHs camera - it's far too long winded. Just pop the card in the reader and drag onto your computer  :)

They cost very little. The latest printer that I've bought for OH has a reader built in and so do most new computers  :)

That's exactly what I decided Gadget.  I used my colleague's card reader yesterday and just plugged it into my machine and away we went.  Afterwards I commented on how easy it had been.

Also it means that photos I take for work I can leave on the card and download at work instead of putting onto CD and taking the CD to work.

In case anyone's interested, I finally bought a Panasonic Lumix DX50, hope I've done the right thing.....  It is so much lighter than my old one and it has an image stabiliser (or something) to combat my wobbly hands.  Took it away on 2 weeks hol and have been experimenting with different settings (and like you Kerry, reading the manual)  :D

Haven't downloaded anything yet, just got home, but of course it needs a different card reader so that's my next buy.
Just thought you'd all like to know I took bits of all your advice, and almost all of yours Tomkin
thanks very much

Hi Barbara,
Panasonic make good cameras so I doubt that you will have made
a mistake.   The main thing is to get used to it and keep practising.
That's the good thing about digital cameras, you can take photo after photo
    and delete them at will.

         Keep Snapping ;D ;D ;D

      Tomkin.

That was one of the camera's on my shortlist.  At the end of the day most cameras will be good its just about what you feel comfortable with, or that's what I think anyway.

Looking forward to getting my card reader so I can download my pictures oh and the memory card I bought so that I can get more than a handful of pictures!! ::) ::)

Hi Kerry,

I know what you mean about memory cards, there was a 16mb card with the camera, why don't they include ones with a bigger memory I wonder, had to go & buy a new one straight away!

Happy snapping!

Profit margins I'm afraid. Camera prices are now so cut throat that they have to
   make money on accessories.

       Try www.7dayshop.com

I get most of my camera stuff and inkjet cartridges from them.
I still check prices from other sources though.
    Always take into account P&P

    Enjoy your holiday Kerry.

I just bought two sets of rechargeable NiMH batteries from a really old source - Woolworths in town!  £14 for 8 which bearing in mind no postage is a good price!

I had forgotten I had legs to go shopping with  ::) ::) ::)

Hi Ecneps,

You must have money to burn.
I would guess that they are  2,300 or 2,400mAH.

       I can get  2 sets of 4 -2.800mh with free cases  for £8-00  + P&P of £3-95.

The postage is the same no matter how big your order and as I always order quite a few items at the same time it is negligible.

Even if I ordered just the batteries I would still be paying only £12-00 for superior
capacity batteries and 2 free cases.

I went to order some batteries the other day from a site, I can't remember which now, might have been through Amazon but the batteries were £2.50 - great, yer right, but the postage £11.80. :o :o :o

I bought mine on my way to the Opticians appointment, so would have used the petrol and shoe leather anyway and I don't have to wait 3 days for them to come  ;D

If you can buy cameras, batteries, memory cards, card readers, Computers, printers, scanners, food, make up, clothes, batteries, graphics tablets, external drives, tripods, books, family trees, etc. from the internet, then why not varifocals.

Tomkin - you are going slightly off topic. Baked beans have nothing to do with cameras!

Hi Ecneps,

Buying varifocals off the net is a bit riskier than buying standard glasses.

First get a prescription from an Optician then go to,

       www.selectspecs.com.

Click on the British flag and on GB currencies.

All The treatments such as anti-dazzle, scratch Resistance, etc are all fitted as standard,
   i.e no extra cost.

                 Tomkin ;D ;D ;D

P.S. always read the small print and conditions.
From memory, standard glasses have a money back guarantee, Varifocals haven't.
Mine are perfect but I could have saved a further 5% if I'd paid by cheque >:( >:( >:(

Why not varifocals, Gadget??

Well for a start, because you don't have to try cameras on  ::)

What happens if they don't fit properly, Tomkin?  And why couldn't you have mentioned this to me before I splashed out on my Gucci ones  ::) ::)

Going right now to see if they sell the same frames on that site, which won't make me feel good at all if they do, so perhaps I won't  :-\

edit: just checked, no, thank goodness, they don't do Guccis ;D

Gadget AKA -always to the point

As I can't afford a tripod I stand my camera on the baked bean cans.
You can reach a suitable height by adding or subtracting the appropriate
amount of cans.    If hungry you can consume the contents of one of the
cans providing that you don't spoil the composition of the shot.

If at an outdoor venue you can also sell the cans of baked beans when you have finished
    and make a tidy profit.

There's only one brand of baked beans I eat and it doesn't come in a stripey blue and white can.  Can't say I have ever tried to buy Baked beans off the net though, I really would have to be desperate, if I waited 3 days for the postman, I'd starve.

Anyway as Gadget says what's that got to do with cameras ::) ::) ::)

Ok for anyone interested, I've used my Canon Powershot S5 on holiday for a week and I am very happy with it.  It's a good camera, the only minus point is the lens caps which comes off too easily but as to its capabilities it does what I wanted, I am able to take closeups of birds, haven't tried any flowers - wrong time of year!

I'll post just a small handful of examples so that you can judge for yourselves.  First I think shows the colours perfectly.  The second I could not resist him!  It zoomed in quite nicely and coped well with animals and birds behind wires, something I could never quite master with my old camera.  It always focussed on the wire and not the beast behind!

Thanks guys I'm quite pleased with the outcome!  Yes all in Isle of Wight :)

Here are two which prove I got what I wanted, a camera to take pictures of birds from hides.  The first was from some distance and on 48x zoom and not too bad I think.  The second was closer, about 15 foot in front of the hide again on 48x zoom.

Hi Pels

I don't know about that, but at least now I can begin to take the sort of photos I want to take!  How many times have I sat in a bird hide and wished I had a camera to record a bird we have seen  ;D ;D

I must practice now with the macro on some flowers
