Hi trying to find info on my Gran's 2 brothers
Parents are James keddie and Elspeth Alcorn
James Keddie:
Born: 26th November 1871in Mertoun, County of Berwick Scotland
Census: 1881 Kamis Farm Cottage, Minto,Roxburgh, Scotland, age 9yrs
Census: 1891Galashiels, Burgh of Galashiels, Age 19, A Lorryman
Census: 1901 Ancrum Ancrum house, North lodge, age 29, a Gamekeepers assistant
John Keddie
Born: 12th April 1883, Kaims, Parish of Minto Roxburgh, Scotland
Census: 1891 Galashiels, Burgh of Galashiels, age 7yrs a Scholar
census : 1901 Roxburgh New Town, age 17, groom and gardener on farm
The above is posted on the roxburgh boardwith a photograph of the boys
but now I wish to establish if the:
James Keddie Buried in Highwood Cemetery in the town of High River Alberta Canada 1870-1961
and
John Keddie buried in the same cemetery 1883-1922
are indeed mine!
I have them on the passenger list of the Lake Champlain Ship, 8th may 1906 Liverpool to Quebec.
and also, I think, on a1906 census, Alberta district, 27, which I believe is in the High river area
What I need is to, hopfully, tie in the above, with their parents
Anyhelp will be gratefully received
regards elspcam

in 1906 they are working at Angus Cambell's ranch , and in the
section 25 township 15 range 29 west of 2nd meridian and although it says both immigrated 1906 on this census...I wonder if perhaps someone else gave the census answers and was pulling information out of a hat ::)
In 1911 they were at 17(or 7?) - 11 - 2 (or3) - w5
John isn't in the ww1 signups....Nor does there seem to be a record of them getting land grants...pre-1930 so were they perhaps always ranch hands rather than owners?

Have you found out any more since original posting ?
Wish we could help...

They had 2 daughters
Elsie and Madge Elizabeth
Elsie married a Donald Grant and was a school teacher in Edmonton 1950-1972 died 1994. They had 1 daughter A Ryder and 3 grandchildren (Galati) and 2 great grandchildren Madge Elizabeth married Henry Edward Jones They had 1son and 1 daughter and Elizabeth died 1935.
Thanks for your support and help.

This is a very old topic but I wanted to say thank you to everyone who posted on it, if they're still around - this is also my family, and I've also been searching for John and James, the only two from that family that have evaded me so far. Although I have been give a bit of information previously about them emigrating to Canada (I sometimes think I should move there just to research, so many of the family emigrated!) I have never been able to verify it all but I should be able to get enough information from this to confirm what I already have. So thanks all :-*

Hello suek2075...If you need any help, just make the inquiry right on this thread...as long as it is about the same subjects we'd prefer to keep it all in one query anyway. Not sure if elspcam will be notified as not an active memeber anymore....but I will private message to say there has been a response just in case.
As you have noted we have fabulous helpers on here, so go ahead and start a new query for the others as well...J.J.

That is amazing, thank you so much Priscilla. I can't believe that all the searching I've done, wrong certificates I've bought, people I've talked to - and this thread is sitting here with most of the info I need to confirm everything and now there are photographs. While I was checking some of this I realised that I have also lost their brother Thomas - I'd forgotten about him. (can't you just tell I'd lose my head if it wasn't screwed on ???) Thomas was the middle brother, born in 1875 - whether he emigrated with them I don't know. No one has mentioned him when they've talked about Joh and James, so I suspect not. I'll do a bit more searching before I ask anyone else to spend their time looking him up. Thanks again - the gravestone sites popping up everywhere are a great resource, I found someone else recently along with two of his daughters who died young, and one that I didn't even know about.

I see no Thomas b. circa 1875 on the 1921 Canada census
The other 2 are in Riley Municipality, Grain farmers on Section 20, Township 18 Range 29, Meridian 4
It has James as married/crossed out then John and Alice J. age 36 born England, imm 1910 & Elizabth M. age 6 & Elsie A. J. age 5
-
Sandra - thanks, I'll see if she responds to an email for here first - I feel a bit like a stalker :) I have seen elspcam on ancestry previously but haven't used it for a while now. We may even have talked about something in our trees many years ago.
JJ - thank you for that. It's always possible that Thomas may even have died young, I can't remember looking for a death cert for him, maybe I need to try that. I think he always got overlooked in the search for John and James, poor man. What do you mean by James was married/crossed out in the Canadian census - just the married bit was crossed out? Would make sense if he never married.
-
You needn't worry, it is a common subject thread...It actually had been transcibed that he was married, in case somebody saw that, but on the image it was crossed out quite heavily. Being that he was first on the list and head of household, I guess the enumerator may have jumped to conclusions. The transcriber was confused for some reason and the children are listed as belonging to Alice J. ( Jessie) Keddie in the transcription
-
Thanks JJ - I'll try to get a copy of that from the site. I've now checked out brother Thomas and have no idea what happened to him. He was born in St Boswells in 1875, by 1881 the family were in Minto but no Thomas with them. At the same time I can't find a death cert on SP for Thomas between 1875-1881, or an 1881 census entry for a Thomas Keddie (or variations) of 5-7 years old anywhere else. I thought he might be with another part of the family but doesn't appear to be. Bit stumped now.
-
Wonder if this is 'your' Thomas Keddie ...

I had spotted that one, and he even came here around the same time as the other lads but 1921 has him as born 1866, the 1906 & 1911 has birth as 1864
um...wait a minute...Just realize sue posted that he isn't on the 1881 census...so he may have died as a lad
-
Thank you both for your help - the trouble is I can find John and James in Scotland in 1881, 1891 and 1901, but there is no record of Thomas after his birth certificate in 1875. In 1881 he would only have been 6, so I would expect him to be at home with his parents. I had another look on SP last night but still haven't found a death certificate between 1875 and 1881 for a 5-6 year old boy. It's difficult to believe that a boys death wouldn't have been recorded around that time, they weren't exactly living in the wilds. The certificate may be misnamed, and I just haven't found it. The other thing that occurred to me was that he may have been living with another family member, possibly with his mother's family, but he should still have showed up on the census somewhere. Unless he's recorded with a nickname, not Thomas - I've tried Tom, Thom and Thos, and T*, not sure what else to try. The funny thing is there are no other Thomases in the family - the naming follows the Scottish convention and every family has almost the same names, in different orders. If I didn't have his birth certificate with his parents names and marriage date/place I would think he wasn't part of the family.
-
" If I didn't have his birth certificate with his parents names and marriage date/place I would think he wasn't part of the family"
You have a record of the marriage of Thomas ??? Or is that the parents marriage you are referring to ??? Did Thomas have any middle names ?
Sandra
-
Hi Sandra - I have Thomas' birth certificate with his parents names and marriage details, so I know he is their son.
Since I posted that I have remembered that I THINK a Thomas Keddie was a witness at one of the family weddings, but after all this time I can't remember whose, so I'm working my way through all the marriage certificates looking for it. He's the only Thomas I can find in the immediate family so it must have been him. I think ??? If I can find it I will know what year it was and where it was. Will post back.
-
Thanks that might be helpful. Checked out a guy in Massachusetts but he turns out to have a middle name Brodie and the birth year 1873 ???
Sandra
-
Maybe that was a bit of wishful thinking on my part - it turns out that it was Thomas' father's wedding certificate that there was a Thomas as witness - so it couldn't have been Thomas Keddie the son. I thought it was Thomas Keddie, but looking at it now it might not be - but it may explain why this particular family had a Thomas, when none of the others did. So after a few hours of scouring wedding certificates I'm back to where I was - no census, no death certificate. I am going to look for Elspcams tree on ancestry and see if she found anything for Thomas - she didn't seem to be looking for him so she may already have found him. On the other hand if he died young she may not even have known about him. But it may show me where to look.
