Hi Harrywrag,
Yes, I am only 10 minutes from there myself and have checked all records. They are probably in an unmarked grave somewhere.

Hi everyone
Is it possible that they were buried with parents or other relatives at New Abbey or Terregles? I know that in my case sometimes people were buried with in-laws etc. outside the area where they died.
Cupcake, did one of the Mein family marry a Strong?
Lesley
-
Hi Lesley,
Have looked at the New Abbey & Terregles cemeteries. May have missed them. There a few at New Abbey, but didn't come accross a William.
Not sure if any married a Strong.
William Mein was my Great Grandmother ( Margaret Mein's father). She was bornTroqueer, Dumfries. They must have moved to Locharbriggs as William was a Quarry worker.
Margaret Mein married a Robert Johnstone Moffat -Plumber, English Street, Dumfries. Margaret had a daughter Janet Mein Moffat - Born Locharbriggs. She was my Grandmother. Margaret probably went home to Locharbriggs, to have her first born.
So, I have been looking for the Meins for a while now.
Thank you

Hello Audrey,
I spent a long time trying to find Margaret Mein's parents. It was year when my cousin from Australia was here, and she found them for me when she was helping with my research.
Margaret is my Great Grandmother.
William Mein b. 1806 married a Janet Gracie b. 1802. I believe they were married on the24th November 1827 at Kirkcudbright, Dumfriesshire. Going through my notes, William died - 17 May 1874. Janet died - 27 February 1864.
There children:
John b. 1831 Terregles
Jane b. 1833 Kirkcudbright
Mary b. 1835 Troqueer
James b. 1837 Troqueer
Elisabeth b. 1841 Irongray
Janet b. 1845 Irongray
Margaret b. 1847 Troqueer
There doesn't seem to be a Jessie. Perhaps she died in infancy.
Hope this helps with your search.

Reading your message again, I realise the Jessie Jane or Janet would be a sister of William.
William was born 1806. From the info I have, he had 3 sisters - Mary b. 23 February 1801 Jean b. 18 January 1803 Elisabeth b. 16 February 1812. and a brother Robert b. 2 August 1807.

I think I may of found my Mein family and I think your william is too
Mary born troqueer 1801
Jean born New Abby 1803 [I think this is the Jessie I am looking for ]
William born 1805[this could be yours]
Robert born 1807
Elizabeth born 1812
father John Mein
mother Jean Black
-
Audrey,
My William was married to Janet Gracie.
Yes,Williams parents were John Mein and Jane/Jean Black. The Jean born in 1803 has to be Williams sister. I hope she is the Jessie you are looking for.
-
Audrey,
If my calculations are correct, William Mein was my G G Grandfather.
There daughter Margaret Mein, who married a Robt Johnstone Moffat - Dumfries G Grandparents.
There daughter Janet Mein Moffat, was my Grandmother.
-
Hi Audrey,
Williams parents lived at Jericho, Locharbriggs, Dumfries. William at some stage moved out there and worked at the quarry.
Do you know who your Jessie married? and did she live in this area?
This is a long shot, but could this be her death. The age is about right.

Robert Douglas c 1838 both born Scotland
David Douglas c 1841 born Sunderland
I have been on Scotlands People but can not find a marriage
audrey
-
Audrey,
I'll have a search and see if I find anything.
You would have thought it would have been on Scotlands People. As you will know, they didn't have to register births, marriages before 1851.
-
Audrey,
Have done some searching but not found James Douglas & Jessie/Jean marriage.
However, there was a William Dalzell & Jean Mein marriage on Scotlands People - married in Dumfries 1823.
Unfortunately, there is a problem topping up my credit. If I could get access to this, it would tell me their parents and know if it is your Jean/Jessie.
Will try again later.

Thanks Audrey.
The reason I was keen to look at this William is, they had a son John who, could have been named after William's father.

They had a daughter Margaret, who is my GGrandmother.
I beleive this is your GG Grandmothers headstone inscription.

My mistake, I meant to say he may have worked around Kirkton and not born there. It is possible he worked at the quarry.

I've been researching the Mien Family for some years. The head of the family is John Mien b: 1755/6 who married Marian Milroy b: 1765/6 and they lived in New Abbey. The place they were living is called Clacken, but on the one occasion I visited no one seemed to recognise this name. My line runs through John's son Robert c: 17.11.1789 who married Elizabeth McKewn c: 8.8.1789 of Kirkbean on 24.9.1811.
My particular interest is in learning more about John and where the family originated prior to being in New Abbey. I gather it may come from the name Menzies, but have lost track after John. I guess it's possible that John is a relation of the William you mention. With them all living in the same area that seems likely.
I'd appreciate any news anyone may have.

Hi cupcake
I note you mention DALZIELL family in your June 2009 mesages.
Would you have any info on JANET Dalzell who married Robert Mounsey b 1787 Dumfries on 18 june 1815 in Troqueer ?
I have details on their descendants but lack info on Janet and her family.
glennie

Hi Glennie,
I don't have information on Janet Dazell who married Robert Mounsy. I will however, have a look for you.

I apologize, you are looking for info on Janet Dalzell.
The problem is, I don't know who her parents were. Janet's death info, may have her parents.Shall keep looking, though. :-\
-
Thanks for the birth info- that was their first son George who is my wife's great great g'father. In 1836 George married at Ramsey IOM where they lived for some years, then migrated to Australia in 1850s. ;)
-
This could be George's marriage:
On the 11 Sept. 1836 - to Mary Stranny at Maughold, Isle of Man.
Not having much luck finding Janet Dalzell's parents though. Came across two Janet Dalzell births - 1790 parents - Gerard Dalzeil & Janet Inglis - Sanquhar, Scotland. 1793 - father - James Dalziel Kirkmichael, Ayr.
Shall go to the library, and and have a search, soon.
-
Yes _ we have the marriage details. Incidentally my wife and I pursued this some years ago while on holiday in UK when we visited Ramsey IOM, but found the info by internet much later.
Thanks for your assistance.
I suppose that it would help if marriage cert for Robert and Janet showed name of her parent- is this usual for Scottish marriages ?
Birth info for Sanquhar seems a more likely fit, given : 1. spelling of Dalzell, 2. closer to Troqueer; 3.Janet's age would be 25 years- c.f. Robert b. 1787 who was 28 years old at marriage; and 4.mothers name Janet???.... just guessing !
-
Firstly, marriage details in Scotland can give the parents name, depending on how far back they married. 1816 may give their parents.
Unfortunately, the spelling of Dalzell, does vary, which doesn't help in the search.
Yes, Sanquhar does seem more likely and Janet would be 25, if born in 1790.
Will do some more searching and see what I can find.
-
Have attached Robert & Janet's marriage. Unfortunately, no parents names.
-
Have done a search on Scotlands People for Robert and Janet's death details, but nothing. Can't see them on the 1841/51 census, either. :'(
Wonder if they moved from Scotland.
