Hello all,

With this latest update, the indexes to all the "church" marriages in

Wales BMD website.
We are making good progress with this project - but there's still a
long way to go!
We would like to thank the staff in the Register Offices who are
allowing us to photocopy or photograph their indexes, ready for the
volunteers to transcribe them; and - of course! - the volunteers, who
are working so hard towards the completion of the project.

We have just added the following indexes to the North Wales BMD website:
Welshpool Register Office
Civil Marriages - Llanfyllin Registration District
1884 - 1917
1694 entries
Until 1898, the Registrar had to be present, by law, at all marriage ceremonies that took place in Nonconformist chapels and Roman Catholic churches - and also, of course, at those that took place in the Register Office! He/she recorded all these marriages in the same Register - hence they are all described as "civil" marriages.
The parishes in the Llanfyllin registration district were:
Llangynyw
Llanfair Caereinion
Llanerfyl
Llangadfan
Garthbeibio
Llanfihangel yng Ngwynfa
Meifod
Llanfyllin
Llanfechain
Llansanffraid ym Mechain
Llandrinio
Llandysilio
Llangedwyn
Llangadwaladr
Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr
Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant
Hirnant
Llanwyddyn
Pennant Melangell
Llangynog
Although the district covered a considerable area, it was (and is!) lightly populated.
Many thanks to Bryn Ellis and his team of volunteers for their work in photocopying, transcribing and checking all these indexes; and to the staff of Welshpool Register Office, for their active co-operation in the project.

Is anybody aware of any difficulties with the project? Anything that Rootschat members can help out with?
-
Hi Dolgellau,
I have been adding updates here, as I get them in the UK-BMD updates newsletter.
Nothing has been mentioned there, but it might be worth going to the North Wales BMD site and asking the webmaster.
One problem all BMD sites have, from time to time, is lack of transcribers -- maybe the holiday season hit North Wales especially hard ??

From Tuesday January 23, 2007
We have just uploaded a large batch of marriage indexes from the three
register offices in Montgomeryshire: Machynlleth, Newtown and
Welshpool.
The full list of updates can be seen at:
www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/update.html (English)
www.gpmgogleddcymru.org.uk/update-c.html (Welsh)
These indexes cover marriages from ninety (90) different churches and
chapels, as well as the "civil" / "registrar attended" marriages - all
from 1837, or from the first marriage after 1837, until 1950.
All the indexes to births and deaths (from 1837 to 1950) have been on
the North Wales BMD website for some time. This update completes the
marriage coverage from 1837 to 1950 - and it also completes the
project for Montgomeryshire !!!
Many thanks to Bryn Ellis, the project leader for Montgomeryshire, and
his team of volunteers, who photocopied, transcribed, and checked the
index books; and to the staff of the Register Offices in
Montgomeryshire for their support of the project.

and:
In my previous email, I stated that:
"All the indexes to births and deaths (from 1837 to 1950) have been on
the North Wales BMD website for some time."
This referred to the three register offices in Montgomeryshire - not
to the project as a whole!
Nevertheless, with today's addition of the marriage indexes, the
project *is* complete for those three register offices.
The project is also complete for Hawarden and Holywell register
offices (which are now a single "Flintshire" office, based in Mold).
Overall, the project still has some way to go - but we're getting
there :-)

Hi Bob ... just wondering, is there something similar for South Wales?

The newsletter hasn't been sent for a while, but a current list of sites can always be found at the "home site" http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/
Looking under "Local", there is nothing there at the moment, but there may be some useful links if you use the pull-down menu above the "County" button.
:)
Bob
-
Thanks heaps, Bob :)
-
I notice that the site has not been updated since May 2007. Up to this date there was regular updates to the site.
Just wondering is there any more stuff to come in the future or has work on the site now come to an end.
-
Hi Haydnward,
In case no one has an answer:
This newsletter stopped coming (early 2007) so I have no new information myself.
Perhaps somebody here could enquire at the above link, or at the North Wales BMD itself.
... and let everyone know the answer :)
Bob
-
Hi Haydnward,
That link above does not work ??? but I have emailed the webmaster on the UKBMD north wales site http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/ and will report back if/when I hear anything.

Hi
There have been no announcements in Hel Achau (the Clwyd FHS's journal) for quite some time. I do know that there were problems of access in some areas and transcriptions that have been completed could not be put up. Also, some areas such as Chirk and Llansilin were initially in the Oswestry Reg Dist. which gave rise to other problems.
I do have a personal e-mail for the site's webmaster and will try to contact him that way.

Hi All
Thanks for all your quick responses. I subscribe to the UKBMD mailing list and regularly get emails on updates on the county's in England, but never any updates for Wales. Some of the English county's seem to be steaming ahead with their transcribing. It would be a shame to see North Wales falling behind.
I wonder if they are having problems getting hold of people to transcribe for them. Or maybe there is just not enough interest in the project. It would be nice to know.
Haydn
-
No, I don't think it's a transcribers problem. I can't really go into details but there were problems of access and permissions.
Gadget
-
Hi Gadget
Ah right I see. Say no more. It would be a shame if it does not continue. As it is a great source of information.
If you ever find out anymore information that you can tell us about I would love to know. ::)

Since no one with more up-to-date knowledge or a direct rôle in the project has come forward with information for this string, an informal bulletin I received in May 2008 may be of assistance:
"I'm pleased to be able to tell you that the project is much more advanced than might be guessed from the information shown on the website!
"All the indexes from the following register offices, from 1837 to 1950, have already been uploaded to the website: Machynlleth, Newtown, Welshpool, Holywell and Hawarden (now merged into a single register office for Flintshire, at Mold), Bala, Dolgellau, Rhyl and Ruthin.
"The good news is that our volunteers have finished transcribing the indexes, up to 1950, from all but one of the remaining Register Offices of North Wales - namely Bangor, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Caernarfon, Llandudno, Llangefni and Wrexham. (The indexes for the Llangefni office have been transcribed up to the 1990s, at the request of the Superintendent Registrar)
"All these transcriptions are gradually being checked and "pre-processed", ready for uploading to the website - in fact, I'm hoping to start uploading some of the indexes from Llandudno office within the next few days. The checking and pre-processing is really
a job for the autumn and winter, rather than the few short months with longer evenings; so I'm expecting to be able to do some fairly intensive uploading from about October onwards.
"The one office where we haven't yet started work is Pwllheli, mainly because the distance, and their short opening hours, are a major problem. Myfyr Hughes, chairman of Gwynedd FHS, is trying to find volunteers who live in the Pwllheli area to tackle the initial work of (digitally) photographing the index books, so that we can subsequently distribute the images to our volunteers for transcribing. We're keeping our fingers crossed!"
Hope this helps. The thought in the spring seems to have been that progress now should come quite soon. Of course the situation could have change in the meanwhile -- so this should be taken as a May snapshot rather than any sort of firm forecast.

In case you haven't noticed there have been Wrexham & Ruabon births added in the last few days.
Peter

Hi Peter
No I did not know. Thanks for the update. It is great to see new stuff coming on line.
I wonder if there will be any more coming soon. What I am hoping for is more stuff from the Llandudno areas and up the Conwy Valley.
Fingers crossed

Just to point out that new updates are finally being put onto the site. Three in as many days!!
Well done and many thanks to the volunteers and site co-ordinators.

Just noticed there has been another update to the site on the 25th Dec for the Llangollen Sub District.
Looks like the site is really starting to make a move again. Hope the updates keep on rolling in. :)

Hi,
I am just bookmarking this site so that I am notified when anything comes up for the Pwllheli District.

Hi Viv
It is more stuff from the Landudno office that I am hoping will appear soon.

I know that I did the Llansilin deaths 5-6 years ago :D
-
5 to 6 years ago crickey that is one hell of a long time to get around to putting them up. I wonder what took so long. At that rate we will all be dead and buried before it is all complete.
People will be transcribing our names. lol
-
I think I did the births and the marriages as well - so long ago that I can't remember. I think the problem was that Llansilin was in the Oswestry RD so it was cross border ;D
-
Well heres hopeing that they may get some more stuff out of the Llandudno RD soon. :)
-
People will be transcribing our names. lol
Just checked - I'm there as being born :-X :-X :-X :-X
But that's one cert I don't need to get - I've got the original ;D
-
Now thats scary lol ;D

I am looking for Russells in the Holywell District from 1837 onwards. Several listed in census returns but only a handful of births listed on North Wales BMD. Is coverage 100%?
David

I don't think that parts of Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire are covered yet. This list gives the birth coverage to date:
