Title: Ballarat and Stratford Baptism Records - BARTLETT/BENNETT
Post by: jeune-romantique on Tuesday 21 August 07 13:21 BST (UK)
I have a Jonathan Edward Bennett who was born in Abt 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria. His birth wasn't registered as I cannot find his birth at all (under various other spellings etc.). I also have a Theresa Lilian Bartlett (his wife) who was born in Stratford, Gippsland, Victoria in Abt 1862. These locations were taken from this couples marriage record (Married in 1881 at Bairnsdale, Victoria {at St. John's Anglican Church...may help with finding baptism})  and the approcimate dates worked out from their ages at marriage.

Could someone please try and find these two's baptisms as I am stumped with their births.

Thanks in advance,
Jeune.

*Parents are:

Jonathan's: George Bennett and Sarah Cooper

Theresa's: William Edward Bartlett and Theresa Alice Calder/Askin/Heskins (there are birth registered to a William Edward Bennett and Theresa Alice Heskins, one for William Edward Bennett and Theresa Alice Calder {and a marriage for Theresa Calder and William Edward Bennet} and the marriage for their daughter that says her surname is Askin)

And what names did they give for their parents?  that will help - lots!
Civil reg did not come in until July 1853, so if he was born just before that then he did not have to be registered.

haha sorry Christine. All fixed now. I noticed that and thought he may have either been born before July or just after as I have heard that some parents neglected to register births either not knowing of the new policy or just ignoring it.

George and Sarah registered 3 kids in Victoria
George 1856 Buninyong - reg 8646
Charlotte 1859/ 4784 & Ellen 1861/ 4805 at Maryborough.

So all is not lost, you can get George & Sarah's birth details from any of those.  The 1861 may well list all previous kids by name and ages, not just sex and living and dead precvious issue.

Looks like your Sarah's death, her birth place is given as 'Hert' one would assume Hertfordshire, England.

BENNETT Sarah, died 1865, aged 41
father: Samuel COOPER
mother: Hannah CARTER

Thanks for that Christine!
Do you have any theories on Theresa's possible name change to Calder? I've found a Theresa Calder who came over in 1857, and one who married a William Edward Bartlett in 1857. The child born in 1865 has her as Calder, the 65 and 67 have her as Heskins (Theresa Lilian's may have either...hopefully Calder). I'm thinking she got her name changed? Theresa Lilian Bartlett's marriage has her mother as an Askin(s).

Also any insight into why Theresa Lilian Bartlett's birth doesn't seem to be registered?

Thanks jadewig. I do have those, but thanks for looking for me (I speak about them above).

Two possible reasons for CALDER as the name she married with in 1857

She had been married before
or she married using a stepfather's surname - out of respect
You would be able to work that out from that marriage certificate - 1857 will have her parents names and birthplaces.

Whatever, it appears that the latter is her real maiden name and used consistently, that is the one that I would go with.   There were no legal formalities for changing names in those days, and you could call yourself anything you liked - as long as the intention was not to defraud.

William and Theresa Alice married in 1857 but did not register kids until 1865 - so they either lived somewhere really remote without a registrar, or went interstate, or didn't care.

Since there is a big age difference with your Jonathon and his Teresa Lillian, he may actually be even older than recorded at his marriage - he could have shaved some years off so he would not appear as old! which would definitely put him pre-reg.

You may be lucky with some baptism records - a lot of kids from the bush got done in bulk lots on a visit to the city or with a travelling minister.  Either way, they do not show up in the BDM indexes if it happened after July 1853.

I don't think that's Theresa Lilian's death as my grandmother has given me a photo of her and on the back is a letter and it says it is from Theresa and her daughter Nancy and the year of the letter/photo is 1932. I will note it down though.

Thanks for that information Christine. I'll have to get their marriage certificate.

Ahh excellent. I subtracted 67 from 1902 and got 1855 for her birth (lol), so I didn't think you were talking about her. Then I realised I subtracted wrong and it should be 1835 for her birth. Thanks for that, it might be her.

Hi. I am a descendant of Jonathan Bennett and Therese Bartlett. Their son John Edward was my grandfather. Are you related to them? Elizabeth
