Title: Lewis Rossi Hardy COMPLETED
Post by: tilly56 on Saturday 25 August 07 14:41 BST (UK)
I am looking for information about Lewis Rossi Hardy.  He was born in England (London) in abt 1860.  In the 1881 census there is a Lewis R Hardy living in Whitehaven and listed as "comedian actor".  I cannot find him in any later censuses in England. However, I have found a Lewis Rossi Hardy buried in the O'Neills Point Cemetery, King Edward Avenue, Bayswater, New Zealand (on the nscc.govt.nz site), buried 19th June 1910.

He probably married either an Anna Isabella Aykbourne or a Blanche Eliza Johnson (FreeBMD 2b/ 786).

I suppose that he would have emigrated to New Zealand after his marriage in 1883.

I should be very grateful for any information - it's the first time I have found a family member who might have lived so far away!

Many thanks.
Tilly

Hi Tilly

There's a Probate for that man at Archives Auckland, but unfortunately the Auckland branch is closed at the moment - due to re-open late next month.

You can check for him and others here:

Hi Tilly,

It was Anna Isabella Aykbourne.  The North Shore City Council cemeteries database has her buried in the same plot as Lewis.

Surname: HARDY
Forename(s): Anna Isabella
Age: 70 Years
Gender: Female
Date of death: 1 Jan 1934
Date of burial: 2 Jan 1934
Funeral director: Sibuns Funeral Directors
582 Remuera Road, Remuera, Auckland
Cemetery: O'neill's Point Cemetery
King Edward Avenue, Bayswater
Location: Oneils Point Row B Plot 122

No worries there, huh?

Hi Tilly,

Hope you do not mind but i have just rung the Funeral Directors in charge of Anna's Funeral.
They have moved since 1934 but were very helpful. They are going to look up their records and give me a ring in about a week with all the details they have. All the records are held off site.

I have done this before for other researchers and they seem to have a lot of information. Sometimes they include a draft of the death notice to be placed in the paper. As Anna died after Lewis the information will only be what the informant Knew. BUT may lead to more family members. It will tell us who arranged the funeral.

I am going to Bayswater on Sunday or Monday. ( My son is taking me and thinks I'm mad trouping around Cemeteries taking photo's of people i do not know )

Will keep in contact.

Regards
Carol

Hello Carol
Thank you very much for your message - and for your help! It would be great if the funeral directors had some info - if I can find any long lost cousins it'll be a good excuse for a trip to New Zealand!
I suppose a headstone might say "Dearly beloved father" or something......... I shall look forward to hearing from you next week, if you find anything - fingers firmly crossed 'til then!
Many thanks again

Hi Tilly,
O'Neills Point is a very old cemetery and not many headstones still standing.
I was unable to find the plot so have sent an e-mail to North Shore City Council asking for further instrutions.
As soon as they reply i will go back out and have another look. Hope to have some results soon.

Hello Carol
Thank you for all the trouble you are going to - it is very kind of you.  Is the cemetery no longer in use or is it just the older parts that are run down?
Hopefully the city council will have some info...............
Thank you VERY much again :-*

Hi Bunny

Brilliant - maybe I have some extremely rich cousins in New Zealand..........although if this branch of the family was anything like the other "well-off" lot (they went to South Africa),  there won't be anything left - all spent on the races and loose women!!!

Thank you VERY much for the info - it is very interesting - I will print it off and add it to Lewis' folder!

Well the North Shore City Council have already replied to my e-mail ( all done outside their working hours!!!!!)
I am now awaiting a detailed map they are going to send out to me ( Will P.M. you)

I now know there was a headstone.

O'Neills Point is no longer in use. (hasn't been for some time ) You can only be buried there if you have a family plot. In latter years people were buried where ever there was space.

Hello Carol and Zephyr

What can I say?! The NZer RootsChatters are brilliant!!!!

(France is rugby mad at the moment, so every day, twice a day, we see the All Blacks on the TV - the news programmes spend AGES talking about them and the other teams....they seem to be the favourites here!)

So - thank you so much for the messages -

How am I connected to Lewis? My Great-Great-Great Grandfather Edward Clifford had two daughters, Julia and Sarah, and one son. I am decended from the son. However, one of the daughters .  Great-Great Auntie( ;)) Julia married George Hardy. They had three sons, Lewis Rossi (Rossi is a surname used as a Christian name - I'm still trying to find out where it came from....a lot of the Clifford family have Rossi in their name), Dudley Clifford and Grattan Stinson  ;D (couldn't make that up!). So Lewis is my something-or-other-Cousin  - and as he emigrated, it adds a bit of interest to the family history...... Grattan apparently went back and forth to Canada on business.

If you go back to my first message, I found a Lewis R Hardy as an actor - I don't suppose he ever acted in New Zealand? I've had a Google, but can't find anything - I can't believe he made all his money from acting - he must have done something else.....although the money could have come from the father, who, I think, died quite young..............

I am really looking forward to hearing the next episode in your hunt for Lewis and Anna -

Best regards

Tilly

The speed of both burials indicates lack of rellys to contact,

On Anns death notice,  no children mentioned

died in a nursing home, resided at 16 Graham Street.

Thank you very much for the info.  Is Graham Street in Aukland?  I shall give it a Google to see if it still exists......  Where was the nursing home - do you have any idea?

Many thanks again

Hi Tilly,
I have just received a detailed map on how to find Lewis's plot so will have a look on the weekend. ( i was only 1 Row away last time   :P )

Did Anna have any relatives over here as i have found;

Surname:     AYCKBOURN
Forename(s):    Annie Smith
Age:    73 Years
Gender:    Female
Date of death:    22 Jun 1911
Date of burial:    26 Jun 1911
Funeral director:    C. Little & Sons
P O Box 26-003, Auckland
Cemetery:    O'neill's Point Cemetery
King Edward Avenue, Bayswater
Location:    Oneils Point Row B Plot 120

Her plot is next to Lewis's.
Lewis lived in Devonport at the time of his death. He was buried on Tuesday 21/06/1910 at 12.00am.

I have not heard from the Funeral Home so will ring them on Monday.

Hello Carol
I don't know if Anna had any family in NZ - but it seems a bit of a coincidence that the person buried next to her husband has her maiden name..............Could it be her mother? If Anna was born in 1864, and this Annie in 1838 (if I've done my taking-away properly!) - then it could be..........I'll go back to Ancestry  and see if I can find Aykbournes there who fit the bill.........

You'll know the cemetery like the back of  your hand by the time you've found Lewis and Anna! ;D -you've nearly got them!!!! - I do hope there's something there after all the trouble you've gone to............. If there is - tell them a distant descendant is thinking of them!!

Thank you so much again -

best regards

Tilly

Hello Carol
What a wonderful surprise this morning - put on the computer to do some work - (have now abandoned that idea)............and found your pictures!  That is brilliant!  I am SO grateful :-* :-* :-*!!!

I can't thank you enough - and all the other NZers who have sent me info! :D

I am now going to print off the photos, settle down with a cuppa and sort out the Hardy file.... I'm going to England at the end of the month for a week, so I shall take it all with me to show the family - they know I have some info, but I won't tell them about the headstones - a surprise for them!

So - I can only repeat my thanks (again! ;D)

Enjoy the rest of the weekend - sun here too and we've got our annual village 'do' today....

Best regards

Tilly

Hi Tilly,

Just to tidy things up for you Lewis' mother in law Annie Smith Ayckbourn was married to this guy here and that was her maiden name.   As found on FreeBMD...

Name                    Year of Registration Quarter of Registration DISTRICT County
Hubert Ayckbourn 1853                         Jan-Feb-Mar                 Lambeth  Greater London, London, Surrey
Anna Smith Wilson 1853                        Jan-Feb-Mar                 Lambeth  Greater London, London, Surrey

Just being a tidy Kiwi... ;D

Also the Findmypast website lists an L R Hardy as leaving England in 1905 to come to NZ.  It's quite possible that Lewis made the odd trip home to England but the site only has exiting passengers and no entries.

Still looking for weird and wonderful facts for you since Carol has trumped us all with the photos.

Cheers

Hi Bunny!

Many thanks - another link in the chain!  I really didn't know I would find out so much about Lewis - I nearly didn't post a message to start with - as you can imagine, I'm very glad I did!

If you find out anything else - weird or wonderful ;) - I'd love to know.  I shall do a bit more hunting myself tomorrow, when I've recovered from the village get-together.......................... ::)

Thank you again for the info

Hi Tilly

The ancestorsonboard website has the following entry, which could be your Lewis.
He's by himself but sometimes they came out first and then sent for their wives.

L R Hardy Age 38 Departed London 1898 bound for Wellington NZ.

Post by: tilly56 on Thursday 20 September 07 10:48 BST (UK)
Hi Genni

Thanks for the info - very interesting - I've "bought" the record and had a look - he is listed as a "Mariner" - so could well be the one, as the age fits perfectly with his date of birth!

So, maybe he left the Navy round about then and decided to settle in New Zealand?

I'm still trying to see if I can find another Lewis R Hardy in the 1881 census (don't the think the actor I found can be him......) but this would explain why I can't find him in the 1901 census - he was, (as I thought),  already in NZ. Also Bunny found a L R Lewis travelling from England to NZ in 1905 - I suppose he went home for a holiday.....

Thank you again for your help

Regards

Tilly

Hi Tilly,

I have a bit of Hardy family background on Lewis Rossi Hardy (one time comedian!)

Yes son of George Hardy and Julia Clifford.

George Hardy was the first Son of John Hardy and Phillis Stinson (hence Lewis' brothers middle name)

John Hardy has a Woolen Drapers at 125 New Bond Street in London.

Mr Hardy snr died in 1891.

Don't want to post everything up here - is there another way?

Hello Mgwd
That was a surprise getting something about Lewis Rossi Hardy after all this time! I will send you a PM with my e-mail address.  I have quite a bit of info about his family and the origin of the "Rossi" part of his name..... he was an Italian Sculptor.

I found the comedian in the census, but didn't think it could be the same one............. He certainly made a radical change in his profession!

I'll send you the message straight away.
