Hi Everybody,
I am new to researching my family in Co. Armagh I do not have a clue where to start with very little nformation !!!!
All I know if that my Great Grandfather James Woods was born in Bessbrook, Co Armagh abt 1864/5.
He married Catherine Rice from Downpatrick Co Down, and by 1894 they are living in New York. (But they would return to Ireland)
Please can anyone offer advise on where I should begin with this ?

Do you know where they were married? If in Ireland the marriage certificate should list names of both fathers (but not mothers), etc.
Do you know when they went to U.S.? Passenger lists might give details of nearest relative in Ireland and person to whom they were going to in U.S.
U.S. Census records- if in U.S. (1900, 1910, etc.) there might be details of when they came to U.S., etc.
Civil registration in Ireland began 1864 (Protestant marriages from 1845) but birth registration (and I think death) was not compulsory until 1870 so there might not be a birth record for James and possibly Catherine.
Church records, if they still exist, may hold information but first you have to find where the family lived (just the county is usually not enough- need parish and preferably townland) and check to local church of whatever their religion.

Arent you doing well with the existing replies.
I went starting with Ros Davies Co Down website freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/R/Rice.htm and found nothing of exact interest, but noted for later
Arthur RICE . Saintfield husband of Agnes Crawford; father of Catherine b. 16 Aug 1869 CR
Ok so New York try castlegarden.org there are 50 James Wood, and 77 James Woods all travelling from Ireland. There are 4 Catharine Rice, 38 Catherine Rice, 4 Catharine Rice, 67 Catherine Woods all travelling from Ireland
so see if any match between 1868 and 1894
Catherine Woods Servant, Gentleman's Servant 16 F 26 Sep 1872 Ireland Australia
Catherine Woods Spinster 18 F 6 May 1891 Ireland City Of Baltimore
Catherine Woods Servant, Gentleman's Servant 18 F 17 May 1882 Ireland Furnessia
Catherine Woods Servant, Gentleman's Servant 18 F 31 May 1882 Ireland Anchoria
Catherine Woods Unknown 21 F 16 Oct 1883 Ireland Bolivia
Catherine Woods Servant, Gentleman's Servant 26 F 1 May 1885 Ireland City Of Rome
ie I was trying to find if they had married in ireland etc. I didn’t find a match among the James Woods ie for the same voyage, but I was rushing and don’t have the time to check the spelling James Wood in simliar voyages
When I use www.familysearch.com I know that Down means the parish of Down ie inc Downpatrick, suggestive possibilities exist eg

Thank you so much Everybody for your help.. and for searching for me.... it is much appreciated !!! I know it is hard with so little information so it is much appreciated.
In the last couple of days, I managed to get hold of my Grandmothers Birth Cert from NY with help from my cousin.
Name Margaret Woods
Born 1894
Father James Woods (age 29 years)
Mother Kate Woods (nee Rice age 26 years)
Address, West Houston Street
So now I have approximate ages for her parents. I do not know if they were married in NY or Ireland but my best guess is IRELAND.
I also know that they returned to Ireland, to Dundalk, when my Grandmother was a small child .. probably about 2 or 3.

Hello BeeMack,
If your grandmother's family stayed in Dundalk for several years it might be an idea to post a message on the Co. Louth board www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,70.0.html

BeeMack, Daniel Rice who married m Elizabeth Shields was from Newtownards, Down, and his father was John. This couple settled in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, but not before giving birth to their first two children Hugh 1869 and Catherine 1872.

I discovered James Woods was a Publican and had a pub at 12 Barrack Street , Keady
(I cant.find Barrack St.on a map anywhere)
He.died in 1878 quote young and his wife not long after Interesting his son James did not inherit from his will until 1893. (They died of old age in their 50s and 40s respectively)
Is there any way u can find where the pub was and what it was called I tried some directories but it lists his name and address and is all and the fact he was a publican and a grocer.
Thank you so much again for all the tips and points thing me in the right direction
