I have just started researching the Trafford side of my family and I was wondering if there is anyone that can help me.
The ancestor I am starting with is my Grandmother Annie Louise Trafford (1891)
she was born in Hammersmith but all here family are from Oxfordshire. Her father I know was Richard Henry Trafford (1857) her mother Alice Rumball.
After that it is getting difficult. On the 1901 census Richard's father is Thomas (1831) from Hellington & his mother Eliza (1825) from Faringdon Berkshire.
On checking the BDM's nothing comes up for Hellington. There are loads for Horspath. Could this be his place of birth? If someone could point me in the right direction where to find Thomas's parents and ancestors It would be much appreciated.

Found this marriage Thomas Trafford marrying Eliza Kent in 1853 Headington District.
Do you think Hellington could be Headington?

Hi Dot,
I'm not sure what your question actually is but I thought you might find this 1861 census interesting 8)
RG9/891 48 40
Oxford St Clement
Bath Street
Thomas John Trafford, head, 64, no occupation, b. Kirtlington
Maria, wife, 60, b. do.
William H, grandson, 11, b. London
Thomas, son, mar, 30, Upholsterer, b. Kirtlington
Eliza, dau, in law, 37, b. Berks Farringdon
Richard H, son, 5, scholar, b. Oxford
Thomas, son, 3, scholar, b. do.
George A?, son, 1, b. do.
Edwin?, son, unm, 21, Cook, b. Kirtlington
:)
According to 1841, 1851 and 1871 census, granddad should be John instead of Thomas

I am not sure but it is likely , isn't it.
Have you found anything else regarding where Thomas was born and who his parent were?
These are so many Trafford's I don't want to go down the wrong line and end up with the wrong family in my tree.
Thanks again Toby

Thanks for this info. I shall look into it.
My question is, to find out who my grandmothers family were and to see how far back on the ancestors I can get.

Have a look at the 1861 census ;)

On the 1901 census Richard's father is Thomas (1831) from Hellington & his mother Eliza (1825) from Faringdon Berkshire.
I can't see the 1901 census you mention. Were you meaning the 1871 census? If so, then I can confirm that it says Kirtlington on the actual census image, not Hellington :)

Just in case you manage to trace your family to Cheshire and/or Lancashire where the (de) Trafford family are/were very prominent. You may wish to check out www.stirnet.com where full details of the Traffords are available. I can't post the link as the copyright won't allow me.

Also have a look at the IGI at www.familysearch.org , Dot :D Someone seems to have done quite extensive search on the family. :)

Sorry, my earlier post should have been addressed to Dot - sorry Tati.

Hi, In 1956 my late father and grandfather made an incredible chance discovery at Rushton Spencer church of St Lawrence, near Leek in The Staffordshire moorlands. The discovery was the burial vault of the De trafford family. The vault had been plundered centuries earlier. Apparently, the De Traffords owned nearby Swythamley Hall, I imagine in the 16th/17th century, My late father, Gary Bailey was first to enter the vault, and it featured in local newspapers.
If you visit 'Ludchurch; Rushton Church Grave Robbers' you can see the entire story, with press photos, and a posting from me with extra details. I do so hope you enjoy this story, and that it may shed light on your ancestry.
