A long shot but could you look for the deaths of John Murray and his wife Catherine Martin. They were alive in 1841 aged 75 and 65 but dead by 1851. They were in the parish of Crawford but Catherine came from Crawfordjohn.
-
sorry they're not there.
i don't know if there are burial records for crawford.
if you find any let me know!

Would you be kind enough to see if there are any McDonalds. I have a large family of them living around Crawfordjohn, so can't be specific as to first names as many were the same.
-
hi
the only Mcdonald is:
McDonald, John, abode - Abington, Die 21-nov 1842 age- c60-
Alias McPhail. Interred Crawford Churchyard.
Hope this helps.
caroline

Thanks Caroline - not sure whether he is one of mine or not. I have several Johns so will investigate further. The alias McPhail is interesting though and would possibly point to him not being one of mine.

Hello Caroline,
I have just discovered quite a few of my husband's ancestors are from Crawfordjohn. Thank you for the offer to look up death records there.
I am particularly intrested in Alexander SLOAN & Katherine SLOAN nee WILLIAMSON. I cannot find them on the 1841 census, and on one of their son's Thomas, death certificate it stated there were deceased, but I cannot find a death certificate for either of them. It is also possible Alexander's parents John SLOAN & Isobel SLOAN nee GRAHAM may have died there.
Another family if I am not asking to much John BARCLAY, I believe he died in 1849, and is buried with his wife Janet, I have her death certificate she died 16 May 1871.
The last family (so far) is the parents of Janet BARCLAY nee McGEORGE. from her death certificate they are listed as Walter McGEORGE & Helen McGEORGE nee McLELLAN, both deceased in 1871. I have been unable to locate them on the 1841 census.
Hope I have not asked to much of you.
Many thanks for any assistance.

Hi Judith
No it'snot too many names, i like looking them up. The more the merrier!
I'm afraid there are no Sloans at all and there is no sign of katherine Williamson.
The only Barclay is
Elisabeth Barclay, Wife of James Watson, died 18 Aug 1835 aged 68. She was interred in Lamington churchyard.
Maybe she could be a relation?
How do you know John Barclay died in 1849? Maybe there is a clue to where he might be buried.
There are no McGeorges or Mclellans either I'm afraid.
Are there any other names you would like me to look for?

Hi Caroline
Maybe you can solve a mystery for me I have an Andrew Gall born abt. 1825 and must have been in Gilkencleugh, Crawfordjohn but I can not find him in any Census he had a relationship with Elizabeth (Betty) Milligan and had a son Andrew Gall born abt..1853 in Crawfordjohn. I do not think that they married . :(
In the 1861 Census Andrew Gall is aged 8 and Betty Milligan is listed as his mother living at Gilkencleugh Old House, Gilkencleugh, Crawfordjohn.
I wondered if you had any references to Andrew Gall born abt. 1825 in your information. :)
Thanks Ian
-
right ian,
Gall seems to be a popular name, there's no Andrew Gall or Betty Milligan, BUT
There's a George Gall and margaret Milligan ???
They have a few kids;
NAME: George Gall
ABODE: Crawfordjohn Miln
DIED: 4 SEP 1819
AGE: 19
NAME: John Gall
ABODE: Crawfordjohn Miln
DEID: 28 OCT 1819
AGE 19
NAME: Jane
ABODE: Crawfordjohn Miln
DIED: 11 dec 1819
AGE: 11
These are all kids of Margaret Milligan and George Gall.
Let me know some more of the galls husbands or wives and i'll see what else matches :)
-
Hi Caroline
The Mystery deepens as my Andrew Gall who's father I'm looking for is
Andrew Gall born 6 Aug 1852 in Crawfordjohn I have all the information on him apart from his father.
Andrews mother Betty Milligan was certainly busy:
Betty was born illeg to Agnes Milligan nee Hunter (had a clandestine marriage).
Betty had 2 other children from 2 different relationships
Agnes Braidwood b.26th Mar 1843 [father = William Braidwood of Chesterton]
Janet Thompson b.26 June 1847 [ father = William Thomson]
I found Betty Milligan on the 1861 Census for Gilkerscleugh, Crawfordjohn with her son Andrew Gall, also living with her was Agnes Braidwood. I Also found her under the name of Elizabeth Hunter on the 1851 Census for Gilkerscleugh where she was living with her mother Agnes Milligan bc.1775 in Douglas. Lanarkshire who was listed as the head of the house. The confirmation for this is that Agnes Braidwood was listed as granddaughter on this Census.
The Problem is finding which Gall was the father of Andrew? :-\
Ian
-
Hi Caroline
Just though if there were any Galls who died before the 1861 Census who were of age to have an affair with Betty :)

Hi Caroline
Just had some good luck and information with another posting on this website. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,273959.0.html and now we have William Gall bc 1781 Crawfordjohn and still living in the 1851 Census aged 70 and his wife Agnes Dodds bc1793 Douglas Lanarkshire much younger than him. so narrowed the search and Andrew immigrated and died in Canada

Hello Caroline
If you get a chance I'd appreciate if you could have a look for John Wilson + Margaret Whiteford. They would probably have died around 1840s-60. Any Renwick's which catch your eye would also be welcome but I don't have any definite links to Crawfordjohn with them, I just know they're in the general area, so don't go out your way.
Thank you :)
Lora.

Our relative Alexander Carmichael was born in Crawfordjohn in 1796. His parents John Carmichael (Farmer, Buckcleugh (Birkcleugh?) ) and Margaret Goodfellow (daughter of farmer Crawford) were married in Edinburgh in 1795.
Do you have a record of their deaths? or of any relatives?
Alexander and his aunt and uncle Agnes & James Goodfellow are buried at Culter by Biggar.

Hi Caroline
I have a note in a very old email on my computer regarding looking up Rev Ian Porteous of Crawfordjohn, with a lnk to what must be the old Crawfordjohn website – probably long since moved to its current location.
I can't find reference to Rev Ian there, and i wonder whether you have anything about him?
Many thanks

Hello Poppysmum.
Is Crawford John any where near Crawford and Leadhills Lanark. I am trying to locate the marriage or death and parents of a James Weir and Marion Anderson. They had around 7 children with the first born Marion~1818, other children were Nicholas, John, Ann, Thomas,James and Robert.
Robert emigrated to Australia with his wife Jane Inglis.
I don't have the marriage date for James or Marion.
Thanks,
Pam

Hi Jess
Great offer .... I am a direct descendant of the Harkness family who have a few mentions in the graveyard (image attached..?), I really need to visit again when the Heritage centre is open.
But I do not have any info re the demise of William Harkness (husband of and Janet Callan who died 1823) he was the father of Thomas, from the attached image.
Any info welcome.

hi Caroline
Although the last two generations of my family (MacDougall) come from Peebles/Innerleithen - Rillbank, and my male line originates from Easdale, Argyll, i am interested in my paternal mothers line. This line, Mac/McQueen was based in (amongst others) the Cambusnethan, Whelphill, Stoneyburn, Braxfield and Crawfordjohn areas.
Was facinated to see your posting and was wondering if your book has any references to the McQueens

Hi Caroline, I don't know if your offer is still open but if it is...
I am interested in the Neilsons and Dicksons in Crawfordjohn in the latter half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th. I have Jean Neilson who was married to William Gill in 1753 in the nearby parish of Wandell and Lamington and whose daughter Marion (b 1760 at Douglas) married a John Dickson at Douglas in 1794. There were 4 children from the latter marriage William (b 1794 at Douglas), John (b 1796 at Douglas), Katherine (b 1799) and Robert (b 1803). the last-named died in 1827 at Snarshead, Crawfordjohn and is recorded as having been buried in the churchyard at Crawfordjohn. I don't know if John Dickson is the same as the John Dickson who died 15.7.1819 at Gilkerscleuch, Crawfordjohn where he had been the tenant farmer, but if it is, he had a sister Janet Dickson who was the spouse of Robert Neilson, tenant of Netherton of Crawfordjohn. It would be very interesting if you could find any deaths relating to these people. Regards, Malcolm

Hi, I realise this offer was a long time ago but I wonder if it still stands? I'm looking for the McMorrans, Weirs and Templetons in the area. Cans someone also help me with something? Most of the records I have say Crawford, but then some say Crawfordjohn. I can't find a Crawford in the area, are they the same place?
Thanks! Ruth
-
Hi Ruth,
Crawford is not the same place as Crawfordjohn, 2 distinctly different villages. Crawford is on the main road south between Glasgow and Carlisle, Crawfordjohn is on the main road to nowhere! :D

Hi - Can you look up any George Paton, or Jean/Janet Paton in the Crawfordjohn death records. They were married (George Paton & Jean Colthart) in Crawfordjohn in 1756. Also any John Colthart and Elizabeth Colthart, who were Jean's parents. Jean Colthart was born in Crawfordjohn in 1725.
Thanks - Tom Moffatt tmoffatt at xplornet dot com

Hi Boyd
My research has only 1 Alexander born in Crawfordjohn to John Brown and Janet Milligan although I find no marriage records for John and Janet.
The Alexander I have has a dob of July 1824 and married an Agnes Kerr in 1852 and yes I think Agnes was born 1826.
In the 1871 census there is a James aged 12.In the same census there is a John aged 18 and that is my link

I have a book of crawfordjohn death records if anyone would like me to look anyone up.
They only go up to 1854.
Let me know
Caroline
Hi Caroline,
I would appreciate it if you could look up DAVID BLACK. He must have died between 1841 and 1851. I cannot find him on ScotlandsPeople.
He was married to Janet Harkness (1828 in Crawfordjohn).
Many thanks,
Patrizia
-
Hi Patrizia,
Caroline hasn't been active on Rootschat for 4 years now, so in case she has changed her email and isn't notified of your message, I will attempt to reply to your query.
The Crawfordjohn Death Records are not complete by any means and there is no record of your David Black's death. There are records for 2 of his children though -
DAVID BLACK, abode recorded as "Strand", aged 3 months.
Son of David Black and Janet Harkness.
20th November 1833, buried in this churchyard.
JOHN BLACK, Strand, aged 7 years.
Son of David Black and Janet Harkness.
24th November 1838, buried in this churchyard.
There is a Monumental Inscription for this family, taken from Sheila Scott's "Upper Ward of Lanarkshire Monumental Inscriptions Pre 1855".
Crawfordjohn churchyard -
"Erected by the family to the memory of their father, David Black who died 28th February 1843 aged 44 years. Their mother Janet Harkness died 31st January 1890 aged 94 years. Also their sons John and David died in infancy."
Hope this helps.
-
I had a look through the rest of the Crawfordjohn Deaths Records and there is another Black who lived at Strand, which must have been a hamlet or farmtown. This may be the father of David who died in 1843 perhaps?
WILLIAM BLACK, Strand, aged 75 years, husband of the late Janet Neilson.
20th May 1853, buried in this churchyard.
Here is an interesting entry from the Death Records, probably not related to you but a good example of what can be found in these records.
BARBARA MOFFAT, Strand, aged 77 years, married in 1804 to John Smith who, after the marriage, deserted her.
1st November 1841, buried in this churchyard.

Thank you for stepping in and looking into the documents, Lodger.
The Monumental Inscription provides an excellent clue. Aside from the fact that the documents are incomplete, I'm curious if David Black died somewhere else. His wife died in the parish of Wandell and Lamington. Nonetheless, the inscription was placed in the Crawfordjohn churchyard by the family.
At the time, Strand consisted of three dwelling homes east of Crawfordjohn and south-west of Netherton.
Given that David's eldest son was named William, the William Black you discovered was most likely David's father.
I'll look through the Kirk Session records again to see if I can discover anything else.
Many thanks,
Patrizia
-
Hi Patrizia, more than likely David died at Strand, there is a 47 year gap between the deaths of him and his wife, she may have moved to be with or close to a family member. The plot in Crawfordjohn churchyard would have been the obvious place for her to be interred, with her husband and children.
-
Hi Lodger, please accept my apologies for the late reply. I'll search through census records to see if any names are associated with potential relatives.
Thanks,
Patrizia
-
Good luck Patrizia and if you require any more look-ups I'll be happy to help.
