Title: Marriage 1808 - Fressingfield - BAXTER/CATCHPOLE
Post by: suffolkboyswife on Monday 03 September 07 11:11 BST (UK)
I have recently found that my husband's gt gt gt grandmother was Ann Catchpole, she married Charles Sheppard in 1826.

I am interested in her mother - Elizabeth Baxter - Ann's birth is recorded on the IGI as 1805 and only her mother is mentioned - Elizabeth Catchpole - I have subsequently found (what I believe to be) the marriage of Elizabeth to Stephen Baxter.  Elizabeth was born around 1762 so my query is would Elizabeth have been married to a Mr Catchpole and he died before Ann was born which is why he is not mentioned on the birth record, or is Catchpole Elizabeth's maiden name and she didn't marry until into her 40's?

Hi SBW

I would think that the latter scenario is more likely and that Elizabeth was born out of wedlock. However, the marriage record for Elizabeth and Stephen BAXTER should show the marital status of Elizabeth.

If you give the date and parish perhaps someone with access to the PRs could help.  It would also be worth checking the Parish LU List at The Suffolk Surname List.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have searched a little more on the IGI and I have found a Sarah Catchpole born in 1800 with mother Elizabeth Catchpole and no father mentioned.

The entry I have found on the IGI has Elizabeth Catchpole marrying Stephen Baxter in 1808 in Fressingfield on the 16th June.  This entry has been submitted so may or may not be correct. (I know it has her birth year as about 1787 but as i have her on 2 census returns I know this to be incorrect and to be 1762/3)

I have altered your post title and I am moving it to the LU Requests board for you.

To summarize; you need the following marriage entry checked from the Fressingfield PRs in order to determine her marital status.

Stephen BAXTER to Elizabeth CATCHPOLE June 16th 1808

Thats interesting about the witnesses.  Elizabeths daughter Ann Catchpole married and had a daughter Jane Sheppard, Jane married Harry Vincent, there must be a connection somewhere!! and our surname is Smith from the Fressingfield area but I know it came from elsewhere before it came to Fressingfield so there probably won't be a connection there.

Can I be really cheeky  :-* ;) and ask for another lookup connected with this.

Elizabeth was born in Athelington which is not far from Fressingfield, she was born around 1762/3 time I can't seem to find her on the IGI.

Thanks,

SBW

Hi SBW

Have been back to records office today and had a look at Athelington, but could not pick out a baptism of Elizabeth Catchpole.

Only references to Catchpole I could see around this time were:

Elizabeth Catchpole buried 14th May 1762 (no age given)
Daniel s/o William and Elizabeth Catchpole bap 4.11.1752
Sarah d/o william and Elizabeth Catchpole bap 23.10.1749

Sorry I couldn't be more help...

Anne

Hello all,

I'm acutely aware that it's five years since the original conversation actually happened, but oh well, hello! I'm Ryan Baxter, a descendant of the Stephen Baxter you've mentioned on this thread (if my research is correct) who married Elizabeth Catchpole in 1808 in Fressingfield.

One of their sons was Joseph, one of Joseph's sons was John (who moved from Fressingfield to Great Yarmouth - less the 'Great' prefix perhaps), one of John's sons was Cecil, one of Cecil's son was Gordon, Gordon's son was Stuart, Stuart's son is me.

If any of you know any further back than Stephen Baxter or may even be related in some way, it'd be great to hear from you.

Thanks!

Hello,
Five years on... I am also descended from Elizabeth Catchpole who married Stephen Baxter in 1808 in Fressingfield. From reading the replies she had two children before marrying Stephen, Sarah in 1800 and Ann in 1805. She then had two sons, Joseph 1808 and John in 1814. Ann married Charles Shepherd in 1826 at Fressingfield, her youngest child was Jane Shepherd who married Henry Vincent. Ann's second husband was Charles Harper.
Did you ever find a birth for Elizabeth Catchpole in 1762/3 in Athelington or anywhere?
