Title: Bossward and Wellman families of Tasmania
Post by: king william on Wednesday 05 September 07 01:14 BST (UK)
My grandmother Florence Maud Bossward born June 8th 1881 in Tasmania, she was the daughter of George Thomas Bossward and Harriet Wellman and emigrated to New Zealand sometime before she married Edward Beach in Palmerston, South Island, New Zealand in 1909. I have never known why she came seemingly on her own, but I now wonder if she was disinherited by her family.
I was googling  "Bossward Tasmania" and I have just seen on a website about a war cemetery in Kanchanaburi with a Bossward death, warrant officer, died 26th December 1943, aged 24, he was the son of a Samuel Royden Bossward and Florence Maud Bossward. that was the name of my grandmother and she was not the mother of this unfortunate soldier.
I am suddenly curious as to why there were two Florence Maud Bossward's from Tasmania. I do not know the age of this other Florence, but she was the mother of a 24 year old in 1943.
I would be interested to hear from anyone descended from George Bossward and Harriet Wellman.
Any ideas anyone.

I think that you will find that the forename combination of 'Florence Maud' was reasonably common , and her maiden name would not be Bossward.  I had a look at the page you mentioned, a quick glance showed no maiden names given for the mothers.  Sometimes it mentions the surname twice, one for each of the parents, mostly not.

It may be that Samuel is related somehow to your family.

Christine - I guess you would be correct in the fact that Florence Maud could have been common then, I just saw it and wondered if it had anything to do with my grandmother, it has been a thought at the back of my mind for a while as to why she came over here on her own.
Thanks - Robin

Just further to that...

Tasmania Pioneer Index

Samuel Royden BOSSWARD born 11.4.1891 Launceston
father: Joseph William
mother: Annie Elizabeth SHAW
284/1891 RGD 33

Joseph William BOSSWARD married Hannah Elizabeth SHAW 22.6.1826 at Longford, Tasmania - both adults
554/1876 RGD 37

Joseph William appears to be the son of Joseph BOSSWARD and Elizabeth BOSSWARD (yes same surnames)  born 20.9.1849 Hobart
1843/1849 RGD 33

So, this would make him a brother to your George Thomas? who was baptized 16.12.1833 Hobart, son of Joseph BOSSWARD and Elizabeth -.
5248/1834 RGD 32

This cd only goes to 1899 so does not cover Samuel's marriage to a Florence Maud.  Let me know if you want details of other Bosswards in index.

Christine  :)

Your grandmother might not actually came over 'on her own' just out of the blue.  She may have went there as part of her employment, or on the invitation of her fiance.    :)

I like the latter option. I have 2 lasses who travelled alone England to Australia in my family tree - but both came to marry fiance whom they had previously met in England.

Thank you Christine and Trish, yes Joseph is obviously the brother of my George Bossward and yes my grandmother may have come over here on her own, she married Edward in 1909, he died in Belgium in 1917 in The Great War, my mother was born in 1909 and she was their only child,
Thanks - Robin

On the GenesReunited site there are Bosswards from Tasmania.

You might like to have a search to see if your particular family lines are mentioned.

Thanks - my grandmother's line has always been a bit hard to follow as there was never much of it, compared to my father's line which has ancestors galore! Will check the GenesReunited site.

Re descendants of above - see archives.tas.gov.au/Pioneers and find George T.Bossward or Harriet Wellman. Their children reference your (unnamed) G/mother 1881 and my G/mother Elizabeth Jane 1861.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, the Bosswards are a lot more certain, although Harriet Wellman is as elusive as ever. I atempted to join GenesReunited but I do not have a credit card and the payment was prohibitive to send a money order to Australia or England, so did not bother,
Thanks to all

Hi,

I just happen to come across your query re-BOSSWARD, I am doing family tree for this family and to help you with one confusing name.....Florence Maud BOSSWARD...the other lady who has the same name is in fact Florence Maud POOLE, she was born Jan, 29 1888, in Waratah, Tasmania.

She married Samuel Royden BOSSWARD and these are the parents of Maxwell Royden Poole BOSSWARD, this should clear up your confusion.

Kind Regards

Cienna
