Maybe I'm the last to find this site, but have just found
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/workhouse (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/workhouse)
They've got loads of records from the 19th century at Southwell workhouse Nottinghamshire. I've found one distant relative, leaving the workhouse with 'longstanding venerial disease' and a 'second bastard' in 1851.
Well worth a visit - especially as you can download all the documents FREE!
Apologies if the rest of you knew all about this already!
