Title: "Local Time"?

I often look at people's profiles to see where they are located as this can sometimes help when answering questions. As people often don't specify their location, I then look at the "local time" to get some idea whereabouts in the world they are.

I've just done this now, to discover that a particular person's local time, which I THOUGHT was close to mine in Australia, was actually closer to UK time.

I then did a bit of foraging and found that many people's "local times" were incorrect.

I thought the time was automatically correct for where you live, but this doesn't seem to be so.

Others who I believe should have the same or similar time to mine were:
01:31:50
09:32:54
10:33:41 (correct)
01:34:24
01:35:38
For example, my local time was 10:37:28 (allowing for the few minutes variation while I did the searches)

Do we have to set our own "local times"?
Should we check to see that they are correct?
Can we change them if they are wrong?

I'm sure there's a simple explanation but I just found this a bit curious - I rely on people's "local time".

Ruskie,
I'm in OZ too and your time is within a minute of my local time - 16.34.
I remember sometime ago adjusting my time - because I was always counting backwards to find what time it was in the UK.
I can't remember how I did it - perhaps it was a SENIORS thing and I imagined the whole thing.

Time Offset:	1
Number of hours to +/- to make displayed time equal to your local time.	Current forum time: Wednesday 12 September 07 07:49 BST (UK)

I'm one hour ahead of Britain i.e 08:49

The time on my profile now, is the same as the time on my clock (well, one of them at least - they'll all a bit wrong - but only by a couple of minutes).

I've never changed/set my time on "my profile" ... I didn't know you could.

This morning when I looked, one NZer was a couple of hours ahead of me, which sounded about right, one QLDer was about the same as me, one was an hour behind, and about three or four east coasters seemed to be on UK time.

I wonder if they know?

It's just a petty little thing but I find people's "local time" quite handy. I will investigate the preferences, thanks Bob.

Just had a look and now I understand. Simple.

I find that my computer clock runs slow,  a few minutes every week, and I have to reset it according to the atom-clock.

the RootsChat server is usually accurate, but now and again it loses a few minutes.

Thanks for posting that - I remember now I stumbled on it quite by accident and I thought I would fiddle with it - Lo and behold I got it right first time.

I must be lucky in that my clock is pretty accurate, but on most systems it is possible to automatically synchronize your PC clock with an internet time server. Unfortunately however a firewall may prevent it.

For Windows users there is a section on this in "Windows Help & Support"

On RootsChat, under 'Look and Layout Preferences', one can choose what time to set.

That's to say, one can set it to any time - not necessarily one's local time.

It is definitely not automatically set to one's local time.

I've chosen to leave my time as RootsChat time (currently BST) rather than setting it to my local time (currently Australia Central Standard Time).

So this post will show as roughly 2pm BST rather than roughly 10:30pm Aus CST - yes, we are about 8 1/2 hours ahead of folks in the UK.
