Title: Help required please SEWELL/ABLITT
Post by: DoubleD on Thursday 13 September 07 09:53 BST (UK)
Hi,
Sorry if I am being really thick here, I am trying to find the parents of William George Sewell born 1st July, 1900 and his wife Grace Florence Ablitt born 18th Sept, 1901.
How do I then carry on? I think I may have found a marriage certificate for William and Grace 1922, Oct/Nov/Dec Ips. 4a 2322, but I am not sure if they are the same people, would someone please help me by explaining were I could possibly go from here.
Thank you for your time.

If you're sure of his birthdate, I'd get Wms birth cert to find his father's name and occupation and mother's maiden name.  Then find the family in the 1901 census.  Then order the marriage cert but ask the registrar to check parents' details before you buy it.

I can only see the birth details for William George Sewell in Sept Qu 1901 Ipswich 4a 1045, could that be the one?

Hi DoubleD,

Grace has a quite uncommon name so the chances are high that the marriage you found is correct.

The only likely birth registration I can see for Grace is:

Florence Grace Ablitt
December quarter 1901
Ipswich Suffolk 4a 1014

If you order the certificate, it will give you her parents' names, including mother's maiden name and we'll be able to trace them on census ...

Are you positive re William's birth year or could it be 1901 instead of 1900  :-\ The one birth I see is:
William George Sewell
September quarter 1901
Ispwich 4a 1045

Sorry Barbara ! :P

Hi,
Thank you for your help.
Two different people have given me the same details of Williams birth, so I don't know what to do.

Do these people know anything else (parents names, siblings etc) by any chance?  :)

Hi,
Siblings for William, Mabel, Dolly, Percy and Bert, I have been unable to find these people on the 1901 census, so thought that maybe they were born after the census.
Siblings for Grace, Rose, Kathleen, Len, William and Bert.
I don't know anymore than that, sorry.

The name Ablitt is still common in the south Suffolk area, roughly from Hadleigh to Stratford St Mary and across to East Bergholt.   ;D

Villages that would have come under the Samford and Cosford Hundreds.

We all know I think that word of mouth can't be relied on, especially with ages.   ;)

There is no birth registered for William George Sewell in 1900, so the 1901 reference looks correct.  If he had been born 1900 he would most likely be on the 1901 census.  The marriage also sounds right to me, can't be many William George Sewells marrying Grace Florence Ablitts

- I would invest in that marriage cert first, then from that, when you know the fathers' names, you can go for the birth certs - but ask the local registrar to check the fathers names before you buy those certificates.

Ipswich register office is at this website

Hi

Just received the certificate of their marriage William George Sewell his fathers name was William Sewell.  Florence Grace Ablitt her father was (certificate not very clear possible John or Jack Robert Ablitt).

I cannot find these people on the 1891 census, I think I may have found them in 1901  on that census all living in Ipswich.

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Hi Double D,

Could you post all the details from the marriage cert, including father's occupations and witnesses? There seem to be several William Sewell/s  :-\

Hi,

Help!  I have received the birth certificate for William George Sewell b. 1st July 1901, but he is at 7 Albion Place, the one I want is at 42, Curriers Lane.

It is strange that they are both called William George and both born 1st July, but mine would be a different year, going by the census.

It now looks like I have the wrong Marriage as well, for William George and Florence Grace Ablitt, this also looks as if it relates to the above brth certificate.

PLEASE Help!

I'm lost Double D!

What was your starting point, if you believe the marriage to be possibly wrong?  ???

And how do you know exactly at which address your William George was born?  ???

Just to add my twopenn'orth, you can't rely on census ages to be 100% accurate, and which parents were named on the birth cert that you bought?

Hi

I have been told that the family lived at Curriers Lane, which has given me a crisis of confidence (not that I had much in the first place), that's why I think I have the wrong one.

The parents of William George are given as William and Ellen (nee Suckling).

Well, I suppose they can have moved ...

Might be worth checking 1901 census online to see who was living at the Curriers Lane address you have ...

This seems to be the family you've now got the cert for:

1901
RG13/1777 90 18
Ipswich St Cement
7 Albion Place

William Sewell, head, 28, Iron moulder's labourer (engine maker)
Henrietta (?) E, wife, 27
Edith M, dau, 7
Ellen M, dau, 5
Henry E, son, 2

Do you know when William George died?

I didn't doubt your find, Sue! Looks excellent with the address being right! It was more a question to Double D, like 'could he have been older'  :)

Now the marriage still baffles me!  :P

Maybe DD is completely unsure about his birth. I wonder when he died, probably before they added birthdates to death certs, I believe about 1969.

I find the marriage puzzling, why Essex, most strange, unless they were in the Tendring district when they met.

May I ask what your starting point is, Double D? Do you have a birth cert for one of their children saying William was William George and mother was Florence Grace Ablitt?  :) When was their first child born? Maybe we can find another marriage!

Hi

Sorry to put you all to so much trouble.

I have since received William George death certificate, from someone whom I least expected to have any information.

I think that we were on the right track with the Albion Place William, I don't understand how, but the death certificate confirms his date of birth.

I sincerely apologise for the time which people have spent in trying to help.

Thank you all again.
