Hi All
I'm trying to find any living rellies of Fred Law described below. Any relations would be through his siblings, he had three brothers and a sister. The sister married a Clegg. I have detailed all I know. The reason I hear you ask. There is a chap in Belgium (Flanders Fields) who's birthday is the same day that Fred died (I don't think he was born on the same day, but you know what I mean) and he found Fred's lonely grave and he wants to get in touch with a relative to honour Fred's contribution to his homeland.
Fred Law served in the 13th Btn, King's Royal Rifle Corps, R/3444. He was born in Rochdale c.1888 and died aged 29 on 03/07/1917 at Wytschate, near Messines, he is buried at Messines Ridge.
His next of kin was given as a sister Mrs M. A. Clegg of 118, Belfield Rd. Rochdale.
Parents and siblings I have identified are:
Father: James Law b. Healey, Rochdale c1843.
Mother: Alice b. Yorkshire c1844.
Siblings: Mary Alice b. Rochdale c1868
Thomas b. Rochdale c1870
John Walker b. Healey, Rochdale c1872
Robert b. Healey, Rochdale c1876
FRED b. Rochdale c1888
Sister Mary Alice Law is missing from the family in the 1881 census. She was living/visiting? with this family close by...
528 Whitworth Rd,Spotland.
Thomas Ogden. 45 Butcher. b.Spotland.
Betty (wife) 44 b........"
Edmund (son) 18 Butcher. b. "
Mary Alice Law (Niece) 13 scholar. b. "
(UKBMD have a marriage, again at Healey Church..1858 Thomas Ogden to Betty Law – could be a relative)
Of Fred’s siblings Mary Alice married Schofield Norman Clegg at Christ Church Healey in 1890.
In 1891 they were living on Whitworth Road
In 1901 at Middle Healey, Rochdale with children Ernest aged 9, James Law Clegg aged 6 and Mary Ann aged 4mths.
Thomas could have married, but living with parents in 1891 aged 21 but not in 1901.
John Walker still living with parents in 1901 aged 29.
Robert still living with parents in 1901 aged 25.
Just as an aside – maybe not connected – this person was living at the following address in 1929
J. Schofield Clegg
4 Keighley Road, Colne
Same address up to 1936.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Bob !
I don't know how many "Cleggs" there are in Rochdale ... but I wonder if this young man could help you .... or at least steer you in the right direction !! Scroll to Local Links and then to Rochdale !!
http://www.milnrow-village.freeserve.co.uk/milnrow1.htm
Annie :)
EDIT ... Sorry Bob ..... I just tried it again .... now the site isn't working !! but his name was Clegg !! I'm going to keep trying maybe it just has a glitch ... it was working before !! ::)
-
Hi,
Just tried the link and when it displays "page unavailable" or whatever just click on the refresh button and it appears..
There is a link to his e-mail address.

Mo
-
Thanks Annie & Mo
I have sent an e-mail to the bloke at the website - which worked for me first time. ;)
Bob

Good Luck Bob !
I think it's a great idea ....... I hope you find them !!
Annie :)

Bob

Hi Bob !
Well he doesn't know his site very well does he ??............ :P :P :P :P
- Your Memories -
of the Borough of Rochdale
Brian Clegg's Memories of Clegg Hall
There's even a photo of the "fellah " !!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry there was no luck .... we'll just keep looking !!
Annie :)
-
Whoops, partly my mistake, senior moment I'm afraid.
I only e-mailed the bloke who runs the Milnrow site. What I should have done I now realise is e-mail the bloke who runs the site where the Clegg Hall article is. Different bloke. :-[
I have now done that. ::)
Bob
-
Dare I say ......... good luck again ??!! ;D
-
Think I lucked out on this one Annie.
Mailed the bloke with the site with the Clegg Hall article. He replied saying that that article was put there 7 or 8 years ago and he has lost all references not only to Brian Clegg but to the whole site which he is no longer maintaining.
What a bummer.
Bob
-
We need some more creative thinking now then ....... :D
Think laterally Bob !
Annie :)
-
Hi Bob.....Loads of Clegg's in Rochdale i'm afraid...but just a thought, Have you tried the Rochdale Observer ? (local paper) they have run these sort ofsearch stories before..bit of local interest...Might be worth a call to them...
LL.
-
Hi Girls
I did think to the side a bit Annie (can't spell laterally) and lo and behold I just logged on and some kind person has just sent me Brian Clegg's address.
LL, did contact the Ob last year when this issue first arose but never even got a reply. I will try again though, thanks for the reminder.
I must keep telling myself though that the object is to find a descendant of FRED LAW, and Clegg's are only a means to an end.
Cheers

http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/19974/
Annie :)
PS We have to be a bit careful on here though 'cos of living relatives and confidentality !! :)
-
Hi Annie
Found his MIC - I searched for Fred Law only, no number no corps, and got 14 hits and he's about the fifth one down on the list. However, I can't justify spending the money and the info will be of limited value in this project. Perhaps I'll hint to Johan in Belgium that it may be of value to him.
Got a nice reply from Brian Clegg but no help after all.
Started to look for marriages of Fred's brothers with limited success. Both LancashireBMD and FreeBMD are limited in that they are not a complete list.

Want me to check Ancestry ??
Annie :)

Please
Bob

I'm doing it as we speak !! ... I'll post if I find anything ! ;)

Do you have elections coming up Bob ? .... you might try the Mayor's office !!
They might like the publicity and human interest story !

Annie :)
PS I'm still looking !! ::)
-
Hi Annie
Sorry been a while responding - wife in hospital running back and forth etc.
General election before Christmas but don't know when yet. It's time for a change I think.
I'll try the Mayor suggestion thanks.
Cheers

I wish you both well ! ... you take care of yourself too Bob ! :)
I'll post if I find anything !
Annie :)

I've been following this topic from the beginning - but realised it was not my Fred Law - well my wife's actually :). - who died in WWI :)
I have three Fred Laws- grandfather, father and son. The 'son' died in 1945. He was a printer and stationer in Manchester. His father Fred was born in Rochdale in 1839 and died in 1899.
His father Fred was born 'over the top' in Yorkshire in 1816, married a Sarah AINSWORTH in Rochdale in 1838 and died in 1880.
So LAW and Rochdale connections but no CLEGG.
A lot of research on these LAWs was done by another relative who died some time ago so I have brothers and sisters names for all three Fredericks.
The Fred LAW who is the subject of the topic was born c1888 with a father and mother of James and Alice (both born c 1840) - see earlier posting. This would put him akin to my last
two generations. My first Fred Law didn't have a son called James Law. - his children were all born in the period 1839 to 1852 though.
This oldest Fred Law had five brothers:
Thomas died 1865 buried at Maltby, YKS
George died in infancy
Edward died 1890. His daughter married his brother Fred's son ie the middle Fred LAW ;D
Benjamin Law - nothing more known
John Hague Law married <name not known>. He died 1861.
I suppose there could be a link but James is not a forename I have seen.
If you wish more details or questions please get in touch.
Best wishes
Reiver
PS Hi Annie

Congratulations on the Observer Bob ! .... will be interesting to see if anything turns up !! ;)
I lit a candle for you both !
Hi Reiver ! ... how are you my Friend ?!!

Hi Annie
The candle must have worked a bit as things have steadied and are trending up.
I have put the journo from the Ob in touch with Johan in Belgium so we will see what happens.
Thanks for all your help and kind thoughts
Bob

Glad to hear it Bob - on both counts !! :)
Let's know when you see something in print !!

Just went out for a lovely Indian dinner, came back, and there it is on the website.
http://www.rochdaleobserver.co.uk/news/s/1022724_bob_is_on_the_trail_of_a_fallen_hero
Not exactly how it happened but what the heck it got in the paper and Johan hopefully will be able to make a contact or two.
Hey Annie, haven't heard the word "segs" for 35 years by 'eck.
Bob
-
Wonderful .... good for you ! .... now just sit back and wait for the relatives to come pouring in !!!
Annie ;D ;D ;D
PS Did you have Rogan Josh - by any chance ?? ::) if you did .... I'm jealous !!! ;D ;D

No, I had Dal Gosht (or something) thats lamb in a mild lentil curry - very nice.
Bob
-
Hi Annie
We got no bites from the article in the OB but we have had SUCCESS. I was contacted by another Rootschatter who is related to Fred Law's sister. Upshot is that Johan has her contact so it's now up to him.
So thanks everybody for your input and particularly you Annie for your encouragement.
I'm really chuffed.

Having recently got back into Ancestry, and starting to research another branch of the family, I thought I'd see if I could get lucky doing a search for 'Schofield Norman Clegg', and found this thread - from 13 years ago!!
Obviously disappointed not to have found it earlier, but there is some very interesting information in it - thank you!
Fred Law's niece (Mary Ann Clegg - daughter of Mary Alice) was my grandma, so Fred was my 2nd great uncle!!
Maybe when Covid restrictions and time/finances allow, I will get to travel to Belgium to visit Fred's grave :)
