Hi
According to Johan and Mary Ann's marriage reg in 1874, his place of birth was LONDON and Mary Ann's was Browns Diggings - I would imagine that this was on the goldfields in Victoria. The marriage is Ref No 4362.
I can't see Mary Ann's birth in Victoria.
She was born her as here is the arrival of her parents from http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23
WARKE Mrs Age 20 MAY 1854 GUIDING STAR Port B Fiche 068 Page 003

There are 5 children born to Alexander WARKE and Jane McKAY between 1855 and 1866. It look as though Mary Ann's birth was not registered. Let me know if you need these details.

Hi
Births to Alexander WARKE and Jane MACKAY
Jane Creswick 1855 Reg No 10771
Julie McCallums 1858 Reg No14501
Henry Not recorded 1862 Reg No 20390X1907
Hester Majorca 1866 Reg No 1758
Alexander Majorca 1866 Reg No 15718
I don't understand the X 1907 Someone more knowledgeable about the indexes may have a suggestion. Perhaps I have misunderstood the Cross reference.
Do you want me to look for further information on these people - marriages etc.
Cheers for now
Cando
-
hello there
accordinging to the indexs
an X in birth registration number indicates registration at a later date usually the x appears before the registration year so Henry's birth wasn't recorded till 1907
however I did note there was a birth recorded in
1862 for Henry WARK reg no 21841 at MCCA father Alexander mother Jane McKay
so maybe Henry himself applied to have his surname corrected to the correct spelling!
also
Ann WARK in 1870 at AMHERST reg no 12890 father Alexander mother Jane McKey
regards Jenn
-
Thanks for that info Jenn - I meant to check for WARKE without the E. I will edit the other post.
By the places of birth I would think that Alexander was a miner.
Cheers

Hello Cando and Jenn
I hope you dont mind me asking but can I be really cheeky and ask for help with two more names they are
Edward Burley, and Jennie Ogole, all I know is that they had a daughter
Vera Burley born 1909 Australia, she was married in Footscray, if that helps
Regards Sue
-
Hello there
nothing showing in the births of that time frame for the birth in Victoria
where did you get this information from? nothing showing for OGOLE are you sure of the spelling
and who and where did Vera marry
regards Jenn
-
Hi Jenn
Vera married Alex Povah, in 1925 Footscray, we found Vera parents on her death, reg number 1068 she died age 60 in 1969 place of death St Kilda Victoria, father Edward Burley, mother Jennie Ogole.
I am sorry I dont have more to go on
Regards Sue
-
Hello there
so you have her death certificate that states her parents names but not where she was born is that correct? or have you just the information from the death index? and she would have then been 16 when she married?
regards Jenn
-
Hello Jenn
The information came from the death index.
Regards Sue
-
Hello there
So you may need to obtain the marriage certificate if you want to go back further. Vera would have given the relevant information herslef which can be better than the death certificate allthough the deathcert will reveal any children !!!
regards Jenn
ps or start a new thread to see if other RC's can be more help!!!
-
Hi
I would just like to thank Jenn and Cando, for all the help and time, they have given me, you have both been a great help.
Regards Sue
-
Hi,
Can't remember whether I have given you this before on a previous POVAH thread.
At Fawkner Crem.
Vera POVAH aged 60, Garden of Remembrance 1, comp 42, Niche 90, 30/1/1969
Alexander POVAH,aged 45 Garden of Remembrance 1 Comp. Niche 89, 4/1/1949
Edward Adamson POVAH, aged 61 .."more information may be available"...

Noting that Vera outlived her husband by 20 years, information given on her death certificate may not be reliable regarding her parents' names.

Hi Sue
I've just come across your post regarding the Jacobson and Warke families in Australia. I am currently researching the same families for a Jacobson descendant in Tasmania and would be interested in exchanging information.
Look forward to hearing back from you
Jenny
-
Hi Jenny
I am so sorry I have not got back to you befor now, How can I help, Annie Maude Jacobson was married to Edward Adamson Povah the son of John Wylie Povah.
I do have some info on the Warke and Jacobson family's .
Kind regards Sue
-
Hi Sue
I wasn't sure that you would receive my message seeing that your posts were in 2007 so I'm glad you did. My friend Charlie is a grandson of Annie Maud's sister Margaretha Ellen Jacobson (known as Nell and Ellen) who married Charles Seymour Vaughan.
I've done a bit of research on the Jacobsons and Warkes for Charlie mainly using the Victorian BDM indexes but also supplementing that with any articles or BDM notices in newspapers that I could find on the National Library of Australia's site http://trove.nla.gov.au/ I found death notices for Johan Jacobson and Alexander Warke and they have helped confirm the names of their children, especially the married names of their daughters. There are a couple of interesting articles about Edward Povah as well, just in case you're not familiar with this treasure trove of a site.
I have the names of Johan's parents but nothing further back, also haven't found his arrival in Victoria or elsewhere in the country yet although his death notice in 1925 states he was a "A native of Denmark and colonist of 60 years". I have possibly found Alexander's arrival in Victoria in 1852 that ties in with his death notice in 1911 that states he was a "colonist of 60 years".
Perhaps you can fill in a few gaps for me (and Charlie).
By the way Charlie showed me a photo of his grandmother (with her husband and 2 sons) recently that was taken around 1912 or so from memory - if you'd like a copy I could borrow it and scan for you. I see that attachments are allowed in this group.
cheers for now
Jenny

I know this is an old stream but I just found it and am chasing information on someone mentioned in the messages here:-
George Washington Vaughan - he married Letitia Johnson on 19 June 1911
But did they have any children?
And does anyone know when and where he died?
And did he have any siblings? (I know - believe - an older brother died at sea)
It is GW Vaughan's father I am following an interest in and want to track if he had any existing family today

Thanks Jenny - love to tap into yours too. Jamjar is helping me get to some of what I need already but any more hints would be great
-
Thanks so much Jamjar.
So looks like Richard Harry Vaughan must be the one who drowned at sea since there is no record of his death.
What an interesting coincidence (?) that Charles Seymour Vaughan married a Margueritta Helena Jacobson nine years before his brother George W. married Letitia Jacobson. Or were Margueritta and Letitia related? So no coincidence...
So if George W. had no children; and Richard Harry died at sea (unmarried?)...
Maybe the only offspring from that generation would be Charles Seymour Vaughan and any children of Elizabeth Mabel? And did Charles Seymour Vaughan have children?
Maybe I can wait and see if Brunyisland can help with more info on the Vaughan family from her research

Great information, both of you. How lovely that the two brothers met the two sisters. The kind of thing period dramas are made of!
I got interested because of the old RT Vaughan (father-in-law of the Jacobson girls since they both married his sons) whose grave I visited yesterday but the grave has no headstone, which seems rather tragic. I wanted to see if there are any living relatives close enough related to be interested.
So I'll be searching next for the grandchildren of Charles Seymour Vaughan since some of them may just be alive still today

Hi Simon
I know some descendants of Charles Seymour Vaughan b1878 but of course I can't disclose their names on this forum or any other forum. However I can still share my research with you.
I have a vague recollection that there were some inaccuracies in the following reports when I did a timeline or similar but I can't remember what they were.
Williamstown Advertiser, 19 June 1926
Time-Ball Supervisor Dead.
INTERESTING FIGURE PASSES.
MR. R. T. VAUGHAN'S RECORD.
The death of Mr. Richard Thomas Vaughan, which occurred at his home, 19 Thomas-street, North Williamstown, on Tuesday, is regretted by a large number of friends throughout Australia and in almost equal degree by hundreds who knew him as the supervisor of the time ball and tide gauge at Williamstown. He filled this position ably for 37 years, and his zeal was frequently commended by navigatiors and shipping companies. His passing marks the close of a cycle of eventful years for Williamstown.
The late Mr. Vaughan was born 76 years ago on the site of Federal Parliament House, Melbourne, where his father conducted the business of a glass bender and embosser. His recollections dated back to the time when the Williamstown foreshore was a dumping ground for criminals. The small octagonal building in which he recorded the tide gauge was fitted with loopholes, and was originally used as a guard house against prisoners making their escape.
Mr. Vaughan joined the navy at the age of 10 years. He served for a time as powder monkey on the warship Port Arthur. His next appointment was on a billy-boy schooner trading from London to Germany and Russia. Later he transferred to an American "hellfire" packet running across the Atlantic. He returned to Australia in 1864 on the clipper Sirocco, which brought 365 migrants from London. In 1866 he voyaged to Japan, and before the trip was ended he experienced one of the most trying ordeals of an unusually adventurous life. The ship on which he was sailing was buffeted by an Atlantic gale and put into an Irish port for repairs. The Fenian trouble was being ruthlessly put down, and the crew, who were mistaken for rebels, were summarily treated by the "Castle" government.
Returning to Australia in 1871, Mr. Vaughan joined the vessel which conveyed the first party of workers to Darwin to construct the telegraph line to Adelaide. Rejoining the navy in 1876, he was attached to Sir Charles Hotham's yacht, Victoria, which was then doing duty as a survey ship. In the following year he was transferred to the Cerberus. He remained in the service in varying capacities until he was incapacitated by illness some ten days before his death. The tide ball did not drop during his absence.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, the cortege leaving Thomas-street for St. Mary's Church. After prayers for the dead were recited, interment was made at the Williamstown cemetery. The rev. M. Flannery, P. P., officiated at the graveside, and the funeral arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr. Ernest W. Jackson. Deceased leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter.

MR. R. T. VAUGHAN
Chief Petty Officer
On Wednesday, the remains of Mr. R. T. Vaughan were interred in the local cemetery by Mr. E.W. Jackson. Mr. Vaughan was born in Spring street, Melbourne, 76 years ago, and for the past 37 years had attended daily at the Breakwater Pier and dropped the time ball at 1 o'clock, and also checked the tide gauge. In 1861, when a lad of 10, he joined the man o war, Prince Arthur, and then had a seafaring life until 1876, when he retired, and joined the Victorian navy, being attached to the Victoria, then doing duty as a survey ship. In the following year he transferred to the Cerberus, and held the rank of chief petty officer. He resided at No 10 Thomas street, North Williamstown, and the cause of death was pneumonia. For the ten days during which he was ill, the time ball was neglected. Mr. Vaughan, some years ago, detailed some interesting information to a Melbourne daily regarding the historical surroundings of the old time ball tower at Williamstown.

Thanks for those articles, Jenny. I had picked up most of that info from my own Trove searches. But I am interested in the large monument mentioned - do you know any more about that? Does it mention RT Vaughan specifically or is it just a general memorial to 'deceased comrades'?
There was an excellent feature in 1922 I think in the Williamstown Chronicle which I found on Trove, in which Mr Vaughan recounts highlights from his life.
I'd happily communicate more in some sort of direct message if you like, but am pleased to have found the 2 Vaughan brothers both married Jacobson sisters - Thanks to everyone on this stream for unearthing that nugget.
-
I just googled Victorian Navy Monument, Williamstown Cemetery and in images you can see the monument with lots of names including R Vaughan CPO and date of death.
Jamjar suggested we could use the message system that I had forgotten about after such a long break from this forum so that would work for me. I have plenty to share when I get back to my PC. Are you aware that the parents of Richard born 1849 were convicts so their records are freely available online at State Archives Tas. I have an article about Richard's trial at the old Bailey. Naval records for Charles Seymour b1878 and his son Charles Seymour born 1904 are on the NAA website. I have a scanned copy of a photo of Charles and Nell and 2 of their boys Wilfred and Charles c1910 from the family. I'll message you later in the week.
cheers
