Well, given the apparent piping on the jacket at his side, I'd assume it to be a 'fancy' hat, such as military/ bandsmen.
Giving us only the smallest bit of the image and removing all context isn't a good start.

Yes it looks like part could be hidden. The edge of the object looks slightly like a tyre/bike wheel but I doubt thats what it is.
Any chance of seeing more of the picture to get an idea of the size of the item in relation to the rest of the pic.

Yikes, you're ganging up on me...I didn't mean for it to be so tricky :D
Here's the scene: It's evidently a family gathering of some importance. All my father's siblings are there, and this is one of their children. I'm there, the only baby, but it can't be my christening, because I look at least a year old and I was christened at 5 months.
I'ts important enough that my mother's mother is there from about 1200 miles away.
While the siblings are posing for the camera, my father and my mother's mother are in the background looking off to the left, taking more pictures.
So I thought whatever Robbie's holding might give a clue. the photos are actually scanned negatives, hence the odd colouring.

Okay...it's my christening after all. I thought the inexpressibly cute baby in this photo was about a year old, but maybe not. Looking at my birth cert, I see the signature of somebody standing in for a godparent, and it looks like her in the photo, second from left. If it's her, she probably never left her home province before or after ;D
The woman in the spotted dress is my father's mother, and look at her handbag ;D

And the other boy in the first photograph looks as if he's holding the bag of the lady who is wearing the blouse and skirt with white piping around the pockets. Look at her bag in your final photo.

Yeah, it's a camera...you can see the lens.
And the other boy is holding Bernice's handbag, too. That's hilarious...I wonder if one of them got to hold somebody's purse, so the other one had to have one as well ;D
