Title: Atlantic Crossings-Lost in transit.
Post by: geniecolgan on Sunday 23 September 07 01:54 BST (UK)
Half my Family is missing.
Can any one help, please.... I'm going cross eyed looking ::).

Family of eight, all emigrated to Canada (supposedly together), between 1902 & 1904.

The four missing, (father, mother & 2 daughters) are:-
Charles Colgan b. Feb 1854
Margaret Colgan b. Dec 1857
Kathleen Cecilia Colgan b. Feb 1884
Margaret Victoria Colgan b. Sep 1887

I've found the four sons:-
Ship:  IONIAN, Londonderry, Ireland - 1903-06-05 to Montreal, Que. - 1903-06-13

Chas T. Colgan,age 38,Carpenter.
Wm. J. T. Colgan, age 25, Butcher.
Leonard Colgan,age 23,Electrician.
John Colgan,age 19,Carpenter.

I'd be most gratefull if someone can find the missing half of my family.

Could this be your Margaret Victoria Colgan marrying Norval Bruce Huller in Vancouver, BC  Canada on October 28, 1922.....

Hi Spanish_Eyes,

   Great find!!!

...that does look like my gt. aunt Margaret who got married in B.C. in 1922.
I will take a closer look at that site. I'm not a certificate collector but I think I may have to buy it to see more details as I'm in Toronto and can't go there in person.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I have the family in 1881, 91 in U.K. and in 1906, 1911 in Sask.
I also have the attestation papers for Wm. & John for WWI and the births of all the children are on FreeBMD.

The LDS ref. to UK 1881 census that you found is my family. It's unusual the LDS made an error in transcription about William's sex, I've seen the actual image of the sheet and he's definitely a male.  ;D
He later served in the I.Y. in South Africa c.1900-02.

I have found them on the 1906 Western Territories census.... they are mis-transcribed there too as Calgan  ::) but I can't find my missing 4 on-board a ship and I don't know what happen to them after WWI. ???

Thank you very much for your help.

Could this be your Charles Colgan who died July 1, 1912 in Saskatchewan?  Maybe after his death Margaret moved out to BC to live with her daughter Margaret who married Norval Bruce Huller.
The daughters maybe followed or married men from Saskatchewan??

Here is a Colgan Genealogy Forum with a lot of Colgan's and a lot of people with information. I saw one post from Chelsea Clinton on there also.

Hi Spanish_Eyes,

once again you’ve helped me greatly. I’ve bookmarked the Sask. and B.C. sites.

I’m fairly certain that the death reg. you’ve found for Charles in 1912 is my great granddad because on Wm. and John’s attestations, they had put their mother as next of kin.

The marriage and death of Margaret Victoria is also pretty conclusive.

I did look on the genforum and I have connections with two posts on there but I had traced them by other means. I didn’t find any others who were related to my family and the post from Chelsea Clinton seems more to do with Elvis Presley than Colgan’s.

At least, now I know where 5 of the 8 went once the family dispersed:-
Chas. Snr. died in 1912.
Chas. T.  went back to England about 1910 (hence me)  :D.
Kathleen ended up in California.
Leonard went to Long Island.
Margaret Jnr. married and died in B.C.

So now I’m only looking for what happened to Margaret (the elder), Wm. and John and for the ship or ships that brought Charles (the elder), Margaret (the elder),  Kathleen and Margaret (the younger) across the Atlantic.

Thank you very much for pinning some of them down. My lot do tend to stray, don’t they ::)? but that’s part of the fun.

This seems to be Margaret Sr. and the one daughter Kathleen although I wonder why the other daughter 3 years younger was not traveling with one of them unless the Miss Colgan is Margaret Jr.

Kathleen being listed as age 21 would make close sense as she was born in Feb 1884 and the trip was in Feb 1904 making it 1883 for her birth unless the age was writen down as 21 instead of 20.

Kaz,

I think you have found 3 of my missing 4 and I think Margaret jr. is traveling with Mrs Colgan.
Kathleen, being older, may have travelled on her own.
Thank you.

                   **********************

Let me run a theory here:-

If the whole family left for Canada in the same year then, as time goes by, it might become "they all sailed to Canada together". (You know how stories get passed down) :-\

...... and .......

If the younger males went out as the advanced contingent to build the farmhouse for the women to follow this would fit in with what you've found.

Does this sound feasible?

All opinions welcome.

It is quite possible although they sure ended up all over the place. As you said they seemed to stray far and wide.....

You may wish to find the corresponding immigration docs/passenger list for their Canadian arrival. The UK passenger lists don't seem to have much info but  the equivalent Canadian docs has names , addresses etc.

Kaz

P.S Sorry couldn't find the father........

Kaz,
I'm most grateful for what you have found. They are nearly all accounted for now.
It helped a lot to know which ships they were on. I had been scouring the Archives Canada passenger lists for the whole of 1903/4 and my eyeballs were out on stalks  :o

Now I've found the image for  Kathleen on the Lake Erie and most of her line is legible except for her destination. It looks like (somewhere?), Ont.  :-\

I still can't find the image of Mrs & Miss Colgan (Margaret sr. & jr.) on the Pretorian, they may be there but some of the images are really hard to read.

I’ll leave this topic open for a bit just in case someone find Charles Colgan sr.  on a boat for me.

Spanish_Eyes - many thanks to you also.

Hi Spanish Eyes,

Nope! none of those are Charles Colgan sr. None of the ages come close to a match.
I’m not even sure what port he left from but he did leave because he’s in London in 1900 and Prince Albert, Sask. by 1906.

He was born in Feb.1854 in Co. Antrim, married in Jan.1875 age 20.
I’ve got him in 1881 age 27 and 1891 age 36 in London.
In 1900 he retired from the Met. Police in London.
I can’t see him on the 1901 census so he could be back in Ulster.
By 1906 he’s on the Western Terr. Census age 52.
In 1911 Canada Census, age 57.
He died in 1912 in Sask.

The Chas T. in 1903 is Charles Templeton Colgan, the son, it’s just that his age is wrong. It should have been 28 not 38. He is traveling with his 3 brothers on the Ionian and he’s on the 1906 Western Terr. census too.

You wouldn’t think that with all those Charles Colgans wondering about we could miss him eh?  ;D  ;D  ;D

One thing for sure he didn't swim over.......  It is odd all the rest are accounted for but he doesn't show up.
Could it be possible he worked on the ship coming over and would be listed as crew?  Got me, just an idea.....

He had to get over here somehow so he will show up sooner or later. One of us may come across him yet.
