Title: 1850 - Shackleton Hanson in USA?
Post by: northern_rose on Monday 24 September 07 20:36 BST (UK)
Can anyone with access to the US 1850 census find Shackleton Hanson on the 1850 US census?

He was born England in approx 1828. (On the 1860 census he is listed as Shackle)

Thanks in advance

Hi Rose

Found on passenger lists....
HANSON
Shackleton, age 24, male, born England, occupation Miller, Destination USA
Maria, wife, age 20, female, born England

They arrived in New York on board "Great Britain" on May 14, 1852. The ship departed from Liverpool.

Valerie

Thanks for this and my apologies too, as I already have this information (thanks to other rootschatters!)

I am specifically looking for the 1850 census or indeed 1870 onwards (I have the 1860)

I know Shackleton travelled to Philadelphia in 1849 as a courier (actually recorded as Currier). He was then back in England in April 1852 when he married his wife in Blackburn.

He can't be found in England in 1851 on the census - fellow rootschatters have even searched images of unfilmed census!

So I wonder if he is in USA in 1850 on the census?

No problem, rose
I am unable to locate him on the US 1850 census either, that's when I looked at immigration.
Hopefully, someone else will be able to locate him
Regards
Valerie :)

Hi. Sorry to dredge up an old topic, but I found this thread and the site when doing a google search on the name Shackleton Hanson - I have a photo album of my great-grandmother's and it has a photo labeled "Shackleton Hanson (sent from America) Billy's grandfather", and I've been trying to find if he is related to my great-great-grandmother, who was a Mary Hanson.

Can you tell me anything more about the Shackleton Hanson you were searching for?

Shackleton is actually my friends ancestor. We know he attended a quaker school here in the UK - Ackworth in Yorkshire. I'll need to check with my friend who he married and get back to you.

Thanks, I'd be grateful.

Incidentally, you shouldn't assume that a Currier is the same as a courier. It could be either a leather tanner, or somebody who curried horses.

'Where to go from here:
After locating an ancestor in the Civil War Pension Index, researchers are urged to request a copy of the casefile referred to by the index. The documents of greatest genealogical interest include the declaration of the veteran, the declaration of the widow, the statement of service from the War or Navy Department, the personal history questionnaire, and documents relating to the termination of pensions."

Photocopies of casefile contents are currently requested by submitting NATF Form 85 to the National Archives and Records Administration, Attn: NWCTB, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20408-0001.
