Title: HMS Skipjack:anyone want to play with this?

 I'd be interested if anyone can date this pic
 I think that says "Wright, Portishead" in the corner.
 My Mum used to tell me the chap in white with the pipe was her dad, but now she denies saying that so I dont know. He was a Stoker P.O I know he was abord the Skipjack at some stage, but I'm not sure he is in the picture. It looks post WW1 to me, but I thought the Skipjack was sunk in the war so I'm confused.. If anyone thinks they want to have a go at smartening them up a bit feel free.
 I do own the photo, but cant rescan as my Tiny FU661E scanner wont work with my new Vista computer! :(

Is it at all possible for you to read what it says on their hats ?
I believe that if a ship was sunk or destroyed, then the name could be reused ... not totally sure

Have just "Googled"  HMS Skipjack and there are a great number of sites that give details of the life of this ship
Including one from the BBC

Anything on the back which might date it ?
If it's a postcard, there may be someone who could date it by the design/typeface/format

Looking up HMS Venerable might help also

Rachel :)

Any chance of scanning the back and putting it on here ?
Not sure which board as I'm still finding my way around, but there might well be a 'postcard' enthusiast who could come up with an approximate date from the layout and where it was printed.

Googled HMS Venerable (looking for clues) ... there were 4 ... launched in :-
1784
1808
1899
1943 .... This was an aircraft carrier which was sold to the Netherlands in 1948 and renamed Karel Doorman.
So if the chap with Venerable on his hat was a former crew member, that gives a possible timescale

Don't know if this helps atall or fits in with the rest of your info.

HMS Skipjack 1934-1-18
~~~~~~~~
HMS Skipjack
Launched by John Brown Clydebank, Yard No: 537, on 18/1/1934, and sunk during the Dunkirk evacuation 1/5/1940.
785t standard; 1330t deep
245ft 6in oa x 33ft 6in x 10ft 3in
2 shaft geared turbines VC, 2 admiralty 3-drum boilers, oil, 1750shp giving 17 knots
2 x 4in/45 QF MkV HA with 40 DC as an escort.
1/5/1940 Skipjack (Lt.Cdr. F.B. Proudfoot, RN) was sunk by intensive bombing from a force of German bombers off La Panne (Belgium) while assisting in the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk. She had on board between 250 and 300 soldiers just rescued from the beach, and there were few survivours.
This would be a successor to the Skipjack my Grandpa served on.
 Thanks for that though
Maybe the crew photo was from about 1920 then?
Just found this
HMS Venerable (1899) was a London class battleship, a sub-class of the Formidable class battleship, and the third to bear the name serving in the British Royal Navy.
Completed on 12 November 1902, initial service as second Flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet.
October 1909 service with Atlantic Fleet after refit.
May 1912, paid off into reserve until the start of World War I when she was transferred to Dover.
May 1915 to Dardanelles, but only spent a short time there before being attached to the Italian fleet at Taranto as a depot ship.
1918 - returned to United Kingdom and spent more time as a depot ship.
June 1920 - sold for breaking up.
Hi Smurf
I've had a quick google for Bristol Photographers with the surname Wright (my Atlas shows Portishead as being near Bristol) ... am assuming that this is the correct name ... it may be printed on the back and give a clue as to the date, depending on whether it's Wright & Co., Wright & Burchill ... etc.
There was:-
Wright (Albert Henry) & Burchill
1906 ... Albert Henry Wright .... (Bedminster)
1910 ...  Wright & Burchill .... (Bedminster)
1912 ... Wright & Co.
1919 ... Wright, A. H. & Co.
1924 ...  Wright, A.H. ... (Bedminster)
1937 Last entry
These are from a trade directory
http://www.cartes.fsnet.co.uk/photo/azlist2.htm
The name 'Wright' and 'Portishead' written on the front would mean that the photo was taken at Portishead.
Bedminster is on the outskirts of Bristol.
This photo is a wonderful find, it is the Halycon Class minesweeper that was sunk 78 years ago today, 1st June 1940. The photographer probably would have been the original Mr Wright who subsequently went on to form Wright & Logan, maritime photographers based in Portsmouth. They may well still be in existence. My Grandfather was aboard HMS Skipjack when she sailed from Chatham Dockyard to take part in the evacuation at Dunkirk. He was killed when the ship was sunk. As I have no photograph of him, for all I know, he could be one of the sailors in this picture. Thank you for this wonderful restoration on behalf of all the families of the men in this photograph. You've honoured them.
The photograph must have been taken between March 1914 & 28 October 1916, I have the Navy Record of my Grandfather Thomas Selfe K17644 showing he served on the Skipjack between those dates, he is the sailor just below the left hand ladder with the cigarette in his mouth  :)
