Title: W.G. Chads - Home Child
Post by: J.J. on Wednesday 17 October 07 04:00 BST (UK)
Hi, lindy-lou & welcome to rootchat...
Your W.G. Chads seems to have been transcribed under the home children
site...http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/home-children/001015-100.01-e.php
which I just recently found out may or may not be so....
Have to do some digging on that, or was he known to have been sent
as part of Dr. Barnardo's Party of children?
Title: William Granville Parker Chads

Yes, he is listed here, and there is a letter from either the home or his employer....Did you have this information? J.J.

OhOh, I see that I have opened a can of worms ...I am very sorry....as I see on another site that you are looking for him with a Jean Cruickshank whom he married in 1911....

I found Florence & a Violet Chad age 4 in a children's home on River Street.
Perhaps something happened to Emma and he felt he couldn't raise the children alone...

Sorry to have opened a painful part of the puzzle. Unfortunately this is sometimes why so little might be known of an ancestor, but it is still part of his life. I see Herbert Chads, William's father, died the year he was sent to Canada...  J.J.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Could be your William in 1911 as looks to be chads on original...
Have not found anything at all on Jean Cruickshank ...so hopefully there is more information on that marriage cert!  It's a crap shoot as to what information people chose to relate, as it seems they had the option to give more info other than basic ...Did anyone know age or where she was born?
 J.J.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
....I have searched and searched for her on both censuses...none are local, and only a few in other Provinces...There is only one couple in Winnipeg in 1881...and if she is theirs she had to have been born within the 20 census years...
Boy I hope there is information on that cert for you...fingers crossed...

Title: James Cruickshank & wife Jean Robertson
Post by: J.J. on Tuesday 23 October 07 16:09 BST (UK)
The family search database has a bit of a glitch...it will look for Cruickshank if you look for crookshank but not so in the reverse.
If you put in Jean it will look find Jane  in U.K....but put in Jane and it shows  the Janes in all 3 censuses ...go figure??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So far here seems to be no sign of a Jane Cruickshank or parents
James Cruickshank & wife Jean ( nee Robertson)
In 1901 the only Jean I can find is this one by herself, in Toronto born Ont 1867 ....of Scottish descent so a little old to have 3 at that age...but she doesn't even show on the 1881 ::) ( maybe down as "Jane")
The only one without family 1911 is age 20 again in Toronto no info
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=83040&highlight=16
She's a little young, but works for a children's hospital, so might not be ruled out...
There is a couple in Northern Manitoba, James & Jane but they are younger than Wm himself! as are any other James and Janes I found as couples...
Only one matches for a James "Crookshank" and wife Jane 1881 at all, in Barrie, Simcoe Ontario...
so you may be looking at a birth in Scotland or Ireland....
Maybe someone might have something for you on the ship's lists...  :-\ J.J.
did you ever send for the letter mentioned on a previous posting...although this may have been exactly what was discussed....but you never know...J.J.
Hi, JJ
Many thanks for linking posts together....I don't know which one to be replying on though?
I'm still no further forward trying to locate Jean Cruickshank in Canada, what I do have is just possibilities for her.  There is a Jennie Cruickshank (Jennie could have been mis written for Jeanie) onboard Lake Champlain dep UK (think Liverpool) 21/7/1910 going to Quebec, age 21, which would be correct for Jean Cruickshank, occ Domestic.
My computer crashed and I lost alot of research but this is from memory, I'm sure on original passenger list it said destination was Toronto.  Again from memory, I found a Jean Cruickshank on 1911 Toronto census listed as a domestc at a hospital in Toronto, age was about right for Jean.  But when I try searching census again I can't locate her.  Also on this census page was a Mary Cruickshank, as of yet I don't know if Jean had cousins etc named Mary.
I have everything of Jean's birth & death in Scotland and her family tree going back to c1740 but nothing concrete on her time in Canada.
Have found in my well unorganised filing system a piece of paper with a reference to 1911 Toronto census:  1911/ontario/toronto/36 (ward 4)/pg1  line 16...............Lakeside House (Summer annex of Toronto Children's Hospital, Hanlon's Point. Jean Cruickshank age 20.  I haven't made a note of nationality & arrival date in Canada :-[  will see if I can find census page again
Yes this is the correct thread ...I read through to see that the census entry was  given to you on an earlier reply #15 just above... http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=83040
age 20 a hospital attendant  b. April 1891 age 20 immigration 1910 from Scotland
I will get the entry into Canada for you once again... and modify to add it to this same reply
~~~~~~~~~~~~~added:
hospital attendant = non-medical duties so could be various duties to tending to patients or clerical it seems
question 1.  What is the right birth information
               2.  So did you ever did find a marriage for them??

By the by Jean, Jane, Janet, Jennie, Janie, Jeannie, etc. all interchangeable apparently......  http://members.shaw.ca/nanaimo.fhs/X074.pdf
We won't go through the passenger list then until we hear back from you...

Sorry for missing previous link to 1911 census, I should have re-read thread before replying.
Jean (Jane) Cruickshank dob 26/6/1888, Gartly, Aberdeenshire, parents James Cruickshank & Janet Robertson (they were both born, married & died in Scotand)
No, I haven't been able to find Jean's marriage to William, on my grandmother's birth cert, she was born 1917, Aberdeen it says Jean & William married 17/3/1911, Winnipeg.

Title: Re: name of ship if poss-
Post by: J.J. on Monday 31 January 11 20:14 GMT (UK)
Arghh, my first reply went South...
I thought you had said the marriage took place in Ontario? If they married in Winnipeg in March, then do we have the wrong fellow?? It says Chads on the actual image, and there were no others about I don't think... and where is she??

 The census started on  June 1, although it can take quite a while to get everyone... Mind you the apartment supers would sometimes fill in blanks, maybe he didn't know they were hitched. Might have kept it a secret to avoid paying double occupancy... I may not have checked directories for him yet, or did I? So long ago I can't remember...

Sending for a marriage would be a good idea then, although they are not on the database

I can look up the BC death registration for Betsy Robertson Thomson and give you a transcription of the document if it's of any use to you.  It won't be for 2-3 weeks though as I'm hopelessly behind on my look-ups and I have a long list right now....isn't it annoying when life interferes with your hobby??!!

Hi

JJ & Susan...thank you for your kind offer for a look up please don't.  I found the death entry for Betsy Cruickshank and emailed cemetery, they kindly photographed her and husband James Thomson headstones for me.  After this we were able to find obits for their children and made contact with one of their grandsons.  On Saskatechewan war memorial site I found an entry for Norman William Thomson, this turns out to be Norman William Chads, William & Jean's son, who after their deaths went to stay with Betsy & James in Estevan and adopted the surmane Thomson.

My Grandmother was born in Winnipeg in 1912 and her parents were Jean(nee Cruikshank) and William Chads. Her mother Jeannie travelled on a ship to Glasgow in late 1912 and from there went  onto Aberdeen where they set up a chain of sweet shops on the Aberdeen coastline. It is possible that my Grandmother and yours were sisters as my grandmother had a sister whom she lost contact with and a brother who she said went missing during the first world war. What was your Grandmother's name ?

Hello everyone! welcome, newcomers to rootschat! lindy-lou gets so much information trickling in bit by bit...

I never did find out where the Lone Tree, Man address was located but perhaps it was near Birtle, in Marquette Region of Manitoba where he now can be found in 1901 census as Chadd...labourer on the Sylvester farm.  http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=64647&highlight=45

legend has it that Birtle was actuall Birdtail but it eventually changed to the quick phonetic way it was pronounced. Older boys were often send to Canada to be trained as farm boys and some were sent to Manitoba.

Just found that Charles Gandy and Horace Wm. Weldon were also Home children who are listed as residing in Lone Tree and in 1901 they are is Rossburn, Marguette, so we appear to have the right area http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=65005&highlight=44

The farm boys were sent to ( Barnardo's industrial farm) Russel Farm home, Marquette, Manitoba
http://genforum.genealogy.com/canada/manitoba/messages/1512.html

A newspaper clipping in 1902 has Wm G. Chads at a Wpg Hotel, and that he is from Rossburn

Hello my Grandmother was called Evelyn or Eveline as recorded in the Ships log when she travelled with Jeanie to Scotland in 1912 from Canada. My Grandmother was 100 years old when she passed away on Sunday 23rd September 2012. It is indeed exciting if we could find out more about this as we could be related. Is your Grandmother still alive. I am not sure how this works but my email address is (*) and I would really love to hear from you.
