Title: James & Ellen WATSON - Liverpool, c. 1820's.
Post by: Iban Kepala on Tuesday 02 October 07 17:37 BST (UK)
Hello there,
I would appreciate any help with this family and their offspring c. 1820's. Information says that they married at St Peter's, Liverpool, around about 1815/1820. THey may have originated from Edinburgh as Robert WATSON, ch. 1821 gives Edinburgh as place of birth on the 1841 census. Ellen, the mother above, maiden name could be OUTRAM, this was noted from  the death certificate in Oz of son James.
The rest of the family are Sarah c. 1822; James c. 1823; Ellen c. 1823 ; James c. 1828/9; William Pettygrew c. 1829; Elizabeth c.1830; Ann c. 1832; George c. 1834; James c. 1837 and Ellen c. 1839.
Robert above, went to Australia immediately after marrying Margaret Waddell WHITECROSS in Edinburgh c. 1843, landing in Sydney 1844 and the brother, James, c. 1828/9, also went to Australia, no idea when - but he was there by about 1853.
Any information in connection with this family  no matter how small would be appreciated.
Here's hoping.
George.

Hi George

Looked on familysearch site (as St Peters, Liverpool marriages around that time are generally listed), but could not find a marriage for James Watson. The only marriage for a James Watson and bride Ellen in Liverpool was 21/12/1915 for James Watson = Ellen Musgrave at St Nicholas. What "Information says that they married at St Peter's, Liverpool, around about 1815/1820" do you have?

John

Hi John,
The information 'source' is family information ex cousin in Oz.
I rechecked with her a short while ago earlier today  and she now tells me that they found Robert and James senior on the 1841 census stating they came from Edinburgh so it may well be that they married up there also and came to live in Liverpool, St. Peter's, and raise their family prior to some of the family moving off to Australia - Robert (1821) married Margaret Waddell WHITECROSS c. 1843 and sailed for Sydney landing there in 1844. His brother James also went out there when we don't know but he was there by 1853.
Usual problem with second-hand family information, no way of checking it for accuracy.
Regards,
George.

Hi Pegasus,
Yes knew about that site, my cousin has been searching it for yonks without any success. I have had a quick browse myself and it would appear that Watson in Scotland is like Jones in Wales.
Have found a possible on the 1841 census  in Bedford Street, St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh for a Robert with father James that could fit the bill but no sign of the mother Ellen so will keep searching
Happy landings,
George.

George.

OK, I posted the Link (just in case)!

P.S.

I used that site to trace the Ancestors of a Friend of mine (all I started out with was what Family Info I could scratch down on a scrap of paper whilst we were on a bus), I managed to trace them back from Liverpool 1891 to Gretna 1841! ::) ;)

Hi there. I believe these are my ancestors. Info I have indicates Robert was born in Liverpool. He married Margaret in Edinburgh where they sailed from to Sydney. Any further info on James and Ellen would be muchly appreciated. Robert was my grandfather(William Watson)'s great grandfather :)

do you know James Watson occupation - was he a Tanner - I tend to agree with Redjed 1  .
if he worked with Leather in any of the census returns you might have it could be him ...
Marriage: 21 Dec 1815 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Watson - Tanner, Parish of Liverpool
Ellen Musgrave - Spinster, Parish of Liverpool
Married by Banns by: James Gildart Curate
     Register: Marriages 1813 - 1816 from the Bishop's Transcripts, Page 39, Entry 687
     Source: LDS Film 1068890

there is no other record for Ellen Musgrave on that site until 1828  and that is a baptism in Rufford - so Ellen Musgrave wasn't born in Liverpool..it looks like their children were baptised in St Peters though - example
Baptism: 26 Oct 1823 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Watson - [Child] of James Watson & Ellen
     Abode: Freeman Street
     Occupation: Tanner
     Baptised by: J. Pulford Curate
     Register: Baptisms 1823 - 1825, Page 102, Entry 816
     Source: LDS Film 1656418

I am convinced though that you have the children mixed up - make a note of the address for James - and James occupation - a Tanner
the ones you have listed are for a James and Ellen -- a Shoemaker in Albion Street
Baptism: 18 Mar 1821 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Robert Watson - [Child] of James Watson & Ellen
     Abode: Albion St.
     Occupation: Shoemaker
Baptised by: T. H. Heathcote Curate
     Register: Baptisms 1820 - 1821, Page 243, Entry 1938
     Source: LDS Film 1656418

Baptism: 17 Nov 1822 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Sarah Watson - [Child] of James Watson & Ellen
     Abode: Albion St
     Occupation: Shoe Maker
     Baptised by: P. Bulmer Curate
     Register: Baptisms 1822 - 1823, Page 148, Entry 2128
     Source: LDSNo 1656418

Baptism: 28 Dec 1823 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Ellen Watson - [Child] of James Watson & Ellen
     Abode: Albion Street
     Occupation: Shoemaker
     Baptised by: P. Bulmer Curate
     Register: Baptisms 1823 - 1825, Page 157, Entry 1253
Source: LDS Film 1656418 - THIS BAPTISM IS 8 WEEKS AFTER James Watson - so definitely TWO James and Ellen Watson baptising babies at the same time - one a Tanner and one a Shoemaker
Baptism: 24 Oct 1828 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Watson - [Child] of James Watson & Ellen
     Abode: Skelhorne St.
     Occupation: Shoemaker
Baptised by: William Goddard Offg. Curate
     Register: Baptisms 1828 - 1829, Page 104, Entry 831
     Source: LDS Film 93877
moved from Albion street
Baptism: 27 Apr 1829 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
William Pettygrew Watson - [Child] of James Watson & Ellen
     Abode: Skelhorne Street
     Occupation: Shoemaker
     Baptised by: J. Pulford, Curate
