Post by: Brettc on Wednesday 03 October 07 20:21 BST (UK)
Hi:

I'm Brett Cairns great grandson of Robert Cairns of Lisburn  ( 1855 - 1935 ) who in 1881 married Ellen Walker ( ???? - 1928 ). They lived at 3 Greemount St. Belfast in the during the first third of the 1900's.

I would like to follow my roots in Ireland.

Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You:
Brett

Hi Mary:

I believe they were married in 1881. It would be nice to know where and which church. I know nothing more than I posted originally about them or any of their  families before them.

To my knowledge their children are:

Annie Ferguson, nee Cairns, b. Lisburn ???? d. at 3 Greenmount st. Belfast. 1967, married Joseph Ferguson 1913, burried Dundonald Cemetery

Alexander,  b. Lisburn 1884 d. Lansing Ont. ( Toronto ) 1958,
married Ellen Gorman  b. Ardoyne 1882 d. Whitby Ont. 1974,
married 1911. These are my grandparents. Emigrated to Canada 1923-4.

Robert b. Lisburn ???? d.1965 at 31 Duncairn Gardens Belfast, married Jeannie ?????? b. ???? d. ???? married ????

Margaret b. Lisburn ???? d. about age 14 of TB.

James b. Lisburn ???? d. ???? . He may have been a signator
of the 1912 Ulster Covenent.

William b. Lisburn ???? d. ????

Thank you for your response Mary. Anything I can post to help please ask. As you can see I have scant knowledge of my roots in Ireland.

Hi Mary:

This is fantastic news.

Annie Ferguson's funeral service was held at Carlisle Memorial Methodist Church. It would seem that Robert Cairns and Elizabeth Tomlinson fit into the picture.

Alexander Cairns in 1912 is listed as a 'bread maker' on his daughter Nan's birth certificate. "He worked on both the Falls Rd. and Shankill Rd. and got along with everybody both Protestant and R.C. and didn't care what their religion was. His father and brothers were all Masons but he always refused to join anything." ( Nan ) This lady is still living today in Stoufville Ontario about 50 miles from where I live in the Peterborough area.

Nan ( my aunt ) thinks that James may have emigrated to Australia.

Could you tell me the address of the place to apply for Robert and Ellen's marriage certificate ?

Many thanks, I will post a little more information in a day or two.

Brett

Hi Mary:

Rec'd Robert Cairns & Ellen Walker Marriage Copy yesterday.
Very pleased.

The script of the letters in this copy can be difficult to read.

Robert married Ellen May 6 1881 at the Cathedral (Church of Ireland) in the Parish of Lisburn in the Diocese of Cosmer (?)

His residence at time of marriage: Sloaee (?) St. Lisburn.
His profession Mechanic.
His father Alexander Cairns.
His Fathers profession Shoemaker (?).

Ellen Walker's her residence at time of marriage Sow Road.
                       her father (?)olm Walker.
                       his profession Labourer.

Witness' : John Cairns and Ellen Cowan.

If Alexander Cairns' wife and date of marriage could be found, I would send for his Marriage Certificate should it exist.

Any input I can offer just ask.
 Thank You
 Brett

I had a look into Joseph Barron Ferguson because I was trying to figure out if he was 'of' my Barron or Ferguson families.

As has already been mentioned, Annie Ferguson (nee Cairns) died in 1967 and was buried at Dundonald Cemetery.  It seems Joseph died on 2nd November 1968 aged 81 (see Belfast City Council burial records).

So I went searching for births in 1887 and found a possible one, Joseph Ferguson born 17th March 1887, mother's maiden name Barron, registered in Larne.

Kept digging and found this marriage notice, which I think might (may not) be Joseph's parents:

[Belfast Newsletter 4 Oct 1876]

FERGUSON-?..? [scribbled out] – October 3, at the Presbyterian Church, Kil?..? [probably Kilroot], Islandmagee, by the Rev. Robert Henry Shaw, Mr. William Ferguson, Islandmagee, to Miss Jenny Barron, Ballycarry.

That would mean not of 'my' family, so I'll just leave this here in case anyone is interested.

Hello Brett, I know this is a really old thread but I stumbled upon it by researching my own family tree.  I believe your Ellen Gorman is my great great Aunt on my father's side.  Her brother is George Gorman who is my great grandfather.  I think Ellen was listed as the daughter of Ellen Gorman and the late Charles Gorman on both the 1901 and 1911 census but on her birth certificate she is the daughter of Sarah Gorman.  I'm assuming she was born outside of marriage and was raised as her mothers sister.
The Gorman's came from County Down and were all weavers by trade, but George Gorman worked on the boats as the docks of Belfast become a major industry, and my grandfather followed him into that.
Anyway, I hope you and your family are well.
