Title: Wright & Taylor, Salford, Lancs
Post by: lynbee on Thursday 11 October 07 08:26 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to find any descendants of Cyrus Joseph Wright & Emma Taylor. (both b. abt 1852)

My son has asked me to include his father's ancestors in his tree and as I have had no contact with his father for over 40 years, I am struggling to get very far at all.

If you are related, I would love to hear from you.
Blessings

Thanks Migky.

I think that Emma may have been born in Bury, so that marriage is most likely.
They later lived in Salford.  1891 & 1901 census has them living in Broughton, Salford.

I am hoping that someone may be descended from them, as I am unsure if I am on the right track....need to sort of talk it through, if you know what I mean.

Thanks  for your interest...it is much appreciated.

I don't know where they are living in 1929.  The address on the 1901 censu is hard to read, especially as I have no knowledge of the area.....I live in NZ.
It looks like 78 Gr Britin Rd, Lower Broughton  (Census ref: RG13/3722 Vol 68  pg 7)

By 1929, the daughter Laura (if she is the right one) is married to Walter Stanley Carter.  Their son, Ronald was born in Chorlton in 1924, so I assume that Ronald & Laura are living in Chorlton still in 1929.

Had a quick look at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk for possible marriages of Cyrus J's children. (1901 census has Fred, Florence C, Laura, Elizabeth E, Edgar)

1. Florence WRIGHT m Peter EDMOND at Church of the Ascension in 1910. The family were living in the parish of the Ascension in 1901 so she is a good possibility.

2. Laura WRIGHT married Wilfred AINSWORTH at Richmond Independent Chapel in 1918. Richmond Chapel was on Blackfriar's Rd, not far from Lower Broughton Road, so quite a likely candidate.

3. Elizabeth E WRIGHT married Ernest GODBERT at St Barnabas in 1915. St Barnabas was on Frederick Rd, also not far away, so a possibility.

There are several Fred/Frederick's so couldn't pick one out, and couldn't find an Edgar at all.

Thank you all so much for your responses.  Sorry that I haven't been back....busy with visitors.

You have given me a lot more info for my notes & to ponder on.

However, I was hoping that this post might put me in contact with some descendants of this couple, as of a large number of possibles to fit in my son's tree, these seem the most likely, and I was hoping to save myself a fortune in certs, by making contact with someone who can confirm or discard my research.

Looks like I will need to spend up and hope.

Thanks again.

the paper has a wide circulation throughout Greater Manchester and the website is well visited.

Title: Re: Wright & Taylor, Salford, Lancs
Post by: lynbee on Saturday 13 October 07 01:35 BST (UK)
Thanks Tony.  I will try that.

The problem is that I know that much of the census records for Lancs are missing/damaged and with the little info I have, this family is the only one that I can find that fits.  But some doesn't seem to. And there are so many Wrights In Lancs that I am unsure if I am on the right track.  And it is not made any easier by researching from downunder and having very little geographical knowledge of England.

Thanks heaps for your help.

worth a post to that site, nothing ventured, nothing gained ;) Also your lack of geographical knowledge is more than compensated for by some of the 'illustrious' names who have posted replies. The fonts of wisdom of all things Salford, Manchester, Salford and Lancashire are obviously there for you ;D ;D

Hi Lyn
Further to my posting of yesterday, and re-reading your thread on the Wrights of Salford, I can confirm that you had my Wright family at Lower Broughton Road.  Annie married Richard Forrester, Fred married Edith Booth, Florence married James Willie Sharples, Elizabeth married Ernest Godbert, Laura marrid Wilfred Ainsworth and Edgar (my father) married Esther Bate.  So some of your replies in 2007 hit the mark.

I'd Love to know where your family fits in as I have no knowledge of New Zealand Connections!

Hope this reaches you.

He had contacts re. Salford.

Hi
Lynbee was onto the wrong Laura Wright and I have now  pointed her in the right direction.
However I notice that you referred to Absent Voters Records giving Service numbers during WW1.  I would be very grateful if you could help with this.

I have Ernest Godbert, son in law of Cyrus Joseph Wright and I have Fred or Frederick Wright, son of CJW.  Both served in WW1 and I have no information on them.

CJW was my g/father and i have my father Edgar's war record.

I appreciate your help.

Incidentally I was born in Manchester and brought up in Middleton but now live iin Ripon.

I would need a few more details to stand a chance of finding anything?
Did spot a Fred wright who was an engraver born 1879 living at 13 Vincent street Broughton on the 1913 directory but does not seem to show up on the 1918 AVL?
He married an Edith Booth in Salford 1903, but i need to know this is your man befor i can look further? Just a name is just to hard to look for.
Not had chance and won't get chance tonight to look for Ernest, will do tomorrow if more detail from you.

I'm guilty of marrying a Yorkshire Lass!

The Fred you mention(ed) is my uncle.  He was married to Edith Booth.  I know he was an engraver and later had a newsagents in Cromwell Rd.  He was a more than competant cornet player and played cornet in the Besses O' The Barn Band.
I know very little else but am writing a family history and he has just over half a page at present!

I understand that he and Ernest Godbert both served in WW1 but I am not 100% certain.
You had some info you sent to Lynbee removed from site for copyright reasons, otherwise I might have the information I am looking for!

I can supply my email address if you need it.

Fred lived at 15 Vincent St in 1911 Census. Born 1879 , lived at 5 Cross ST in 1881, and 1891 then moved with family to 78Lower broughton Rd.  Married in 1903 and had 2 children in 1904 and 1908 who i believe never married

The shop was a newsagents at 136 Cromwell Rd.  Fred passed away in 1958.

Save your breath, it looks like i am quicker than you ;D

Ok, found Ernest on the 1918 AVL at the 125 Whit lane address
It gives him as Private 117765 MT/ ASC  ( Army service corps )
There is a medal card indext for him but this one shows service number as DM2/ 1177665 but is the same man.
There does not seem to be any service or pension record that survived for him.
You can if you have ancestry, download his medal card off that site. If not you can get a copy for £2 from this link. Click for Ernest Medal card index (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=3527571&queryType=1&resultcount=1)

I did also find a medal card and service pension  records for Frank (Ernest brother) Godbert.
Fred Godbert, public school battalion, 20th Royal Fusiliers.
Private 4877.
Shows his next of kin address as the 125 Whit lane and his father is named as is a Bertha at the same address.
There are some 13 pages in the file.
Again you can get a copy of the medal card indext from either ancestry or  this link Click here for Frank's medal card indext (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=3527572&queryType=1&resultcount=1)
Frank was invalided out of the army and also received the Silver war badge.

I would contact Besses band and see if you can purchase a larger print of that photo?
Have you Edgar's navy records? You can get them from the national archives.
Click for Merchant navy records (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/merchantseaman1858-1917.htm)
You will have to search through all the Fred Wright records on either Ancestry or at the national archives. Don't for get many records no longer exist and have been lost, also you may have to search with just the surname as not all are listed with both first & surname. Good luck.
