My step-dad was in the army for many years and had many medals. Unfortunately an ex-family member sold them some time ago and my step-dad is quite upset still.
can we get replacements? who would we contact?. it would be lovely to be able to get them for him

This from the website www.veterans-uk.info/medals/replace.html
"Campaign medals cannot be replaced by the Ministry of Defence unless they are stolen or accidentally destroyed beyond the control of the owner e.g. in a house fire. You would need to approach a reputable medal dealer (look in Yellow Pages). In some cases you will be surprised at how reasonably priced campaign medals are."

Well...I beg to differ on that!!!
I enquired about my grandfathers...and was quoted around £250...for TWO!!!

I'm also searching for my uncles from the Glosters in Korea (hundreds and hundreds of pounds) and a great uncle from WW1...a DCM group...probably near four figures or more....
If they are named...ie post WW2, chances are they are out there somewhere...someone has them. Even if not named...they will be out there...
Collectors go for individual actions or individual regiments, some just try and collect all ever issued....
Put a note on http://www.medaltracker.com/
All dealers and collectors check this with every purchase.
If they are WW2...These originals are relatively easy to get, as they are un named...BUT certain groups and individual medals are expensive.
There are copy's out there but they are of a poorer quality and will have to be named (if post WW2) in the manner they were originally...

As I know nothing about war medals, I just wondered if they were given to the members of the forces at the time they were issued, or at the end of whichever war they fought in? If it was at the end of the war, what happened if the soldier had already been killed?

The medal index cards in Kew are for the First World War only.
As Scrimnet says medals for WW2 were not named so you can buy original WW2 medals quite cheaply. If he earned other medals than WW2 ones you should at least get a quote from the Medal Office for replacements. To get someone elses and remove the name would be wrong.
Most modern reproductions are of a very poor quality. If you cannot get a good set I would try and buy a set of miniture medals made about the same time as the originals. The key is finding out what he had.
Ken
Lizzie..medals awarded to men who had died went to whoever he left his possessions to in a will. If he did not leave a will they went to his next of kin.

Thanks, then I guess my g.uncle's medals went to his oldest brother, who married a widow with children and went to live in London. She was too old to have any more children with my g.uncle so who knows what happened to the medals as I don't suppose she or her own children would be interested in them.
