Many thanks Emma,
Even though this is very helpful it does not tell me where in England Thomas was born.
If possible would you be so kind as to look in subsequent census records 1861/1871 perhaps to see if birthplace is entered, I`m hoping it was Northumberland.
Thank you.

Hi Victoria,
I'm sorry but we have only transcribed the 1851 census and therefore don’t have permission to put any other transcription on-line. ??? Anyway they where only required to give country of origin outside Scotland, some did give more info but it’s a long shot, have you looked for a marriage, it might give more information if it is a church record.
I’ll have a wee look for you now.

Hi everyone,
There's a bit of a discrepancy in the family's 1851 and 1861 census entries. While Thomas gives his birthplace in 1851 as England, he says he was born in Aberlady, Haddingtonshire, Scotland in 1861! Thomas and Mary (nee Edgar) married on the 27th September 1839 in Dumfries. Agnes was born there in 1846 and they had another daughter, born 1856 in Moffat, named Mary Jane.
Thomas is dead by the 1871 census but since he died after official registration began (1855), you will be able to get his death certificate to find out his parents' names. :) This is available at ScotlandsPeople.
