Title: HAM in Kent
Post by: VICTORIA on Sunday 21 October 07 10:35 BST (UK)
I have baptism records for children of James Hubbard and Sarah Moses Hartlip Parish Records.

There are 10 children altogether the birth dates range from

1778 to 1795  all baptised Hartlip Kent.

I had a look on IGI and all records of baptisms were there only they did not say Hartlip they say HAM KENT.

Can anyone tell me if they know the difference in locations.

Ham is near Sandwich, not far from the East Kent Coast.
According to my Parish map, Hartlip is right over the other side of Kent in the North West near Chatham & the River Medway.
Quite a distance!

Hi Betty,

Thanks for information, all my ancestors were from Upchurch,Hartlip,Newington, Lower Halstow, I wonder if I contacted Mormons Website they would check records, I am sure places of baptism should have been Hartlip and not Ham, all the actual birthdates for children were correct but they did not have maiden name of their mother which I thought was puzzling as my records give maiden name of mother.

The parents are named as James Hubbard and Sarah Hubbard.
My records give names as James Hubbard and Sarah Moses.

Why don't you order the films in to view for yourself?
Looking at the indexes, check to see which were submitted and which extracted.
never assume that any are 'correct' until you've viewed it for yourself.

Hi Pauline I got family baptism records from

Vital Records Index 2 ( which are from Latter Day Saints ) cds

Same as Mormons Site  www.familysearch.org

You would expect them to be the same.

I don't know which particular set of records you are looking at from familysearch, and I don't possess the VRI(2) either.

Which (if any) give a batch number and what is it?

The batch number for Ham is C031744

Victoria,  are the dates of baptism, at Hartlip and Ham, identical for all the children?

Thanks for the batch number. They baptisms seem to be extracted records.

Genuki explicitly states that they (IGI and BVRI)  do NOT contain the same information.
http://www.sierratel.com/colinf/genuki/CAV/IGIBVRI.html

i'm looking at the bvri info and it doesn't seem to mention hartlip at all...?

The IGI place name is a mistake and that batch number covers several different parishes not only Ham.  I have a theory as to how this may have come about ..................

Often a particular library or organisation may order filmed copies of events for several different parishes.  If these parishes are relatively small ones, several parishes may be accomodated on one roll of microfilm and often in alphabetical order.

East Kent parishes, in order, would be .............

Ham
Harbledown
Harrietsham
Hartlip

In my own personal records (from the original parish register) I have James TADDLETON/SADDLETON baptised Harbledown 30 Sep 1810.  This event is recorded on the IGI as taking place in Ham with the same batch number as your Hartlip entries ie. C031744.  Thus I would suggest that somebody has copied entries from a film and not changed the parish from Ham to Harbledown and Hartlip.  Whether Harrietsham and/or other parishes are also included in this same batch number I couldn't say without checking it out.

Hi.

I am trying to work out why some of my wife's forebears are shown as being baptised in Ham & also the Parish Church of Lower Hardres. Am trying to find forebears of Samuel & his wife Elizabeth??

Regards,

Gary,

Hi

Next to Ham is Lower Halstow; sure it's not Halstow rather than Hardres?  Could be mis transcription

Gary,

Duplicate entries are a problem on Family Search.  The problem occurs because various Parishes are on the same film.  In this case Ham, Lower Hardres and probably Harbledown.  Many threads on Rootchat about this subject.

The baptism took place on 10 April 1775 at Lower Hardres.

There was a marriage date, as follows at Lower Hardres,
1668 Dec 4 Samuel Wells Elizabeth Walters.

Hope this is of some help,
Tony

Hi Tony.

Thanks very much for that. I am sure it is Elizabeth Walters but so far no birth details for her or Samuel.

Cheers,

Gary.

Alex

I think you are confused with Ham Green at Upchurch. Ham is miles away from Lower Halstow.
