-
Hi kerry1212
Could you be a bit more specific about place and time :)
Almost everyone living in Durham will have miners in their tree.
In the 1881 Census there were 59,282 coal miners n Durham. Numbers reached a peak in County Durham in 1923 when 170,000 miners were employed in the industry.

Hi
We have a number of miners / keelmen in our tree from both Northumberland and Durham. One of those families is Morton from the Whickham area of Durham.
It would be nice if there were a link to the Morton on your list.
best regards
-
hi charjack if you would like to give names i can check for you..
-
Hi
The Morton name appears a fair way back in our history first appearing when Ann Morton marries Robert Fulthorp (Miner) in Whickham in 1786. Her father was Ralph Morton who we also believe was a miner but we dont have much more on him.
Obviously no pictures but it would be nice if they cropped up on another tree.
thanks and best regards
-
hi charjack sorry mine starts in 1840 in lumley durham with a george morton married a jemima.
-
Hello kerry1212,
you havn't got mine listed,
I have some Durham miners, originating from a Welsh mining family, branching off to Yorkshire mines as well, I dont know if you know of this site but it is interesting and shows the large scale of workers down the mines back then.

It is a possibility one generation after my post the Fulthorp (inc Ralph Morton's daughter) do marry into a Hall family.
I will investigate further.
Thanks again

Hi Kerry 1212,
Do you have anything on the Luke family? They are generally from Wheatley Hill, Thornley, Cassop areas of Durham.

Russ

Names you have on your list which I am interested in are: Maddison and Turton. Didn't notice Ridley though.
my Maddison's went to Australia, then to new Zealand where he was a miner as well.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give.
Rainy :) :) :)
Ps. Have since found our Edward Maddison's family, interested in his sibling who would have been Coal miners as well. Can give their names if necessary to see if they are on your list. His father William.
Many thanks Rainy ;) ;)

Hi Kerry,
I have marriage certificates for family members in 1918/20 stating that the sons who were getting married and their fathers were miner's in County of Durham...the names are Robson and Johnson, I also believe that some of my Marshall family were also Miners and they were all in that area.
If you had anything on these families, I would appreciate it.
I have a photo of my fathers family I believe that it was taken some where in South Shield...around 1920's It is a group photo and looks like a work group of men and my Grandfather, dad and uncles are in it ....can you post photos on this site? Happy to share someone in the group might recognise their family member in it.
Anyway, Regards,
Isabel, Australia. :)

Hello,
In this photo is my Grandfather William Marshall, my father Albert William Marshall, two uncles William (Billy) & Frank Marshall & another uncle on my Grandmothers side Manson.......they all worked in the Durham mines but I don't know which one.....I don't know the other people in the photo.
These are addresses I have for this family:
1881- 86 Garden Lane, St Hilda’s South Shields, England
1891- 21 Mill St, Westoe, South Shields,England
1901- 3 Elston Street, Felling, South Shields, England
1911- 7 Coromation Terrace, Springwell, Near Gateshead, South Shields, England.
My dad is the one in the middle standing with a bonnet on and someone has their hand on his shoulder...he would probably be around 20 ?...he was born 1895.
Can anyone tell me which mine they would have worked in?
Isabel :)

Bill

kerry
-
Kerry,
I've got Sarah born Davy Lamp, Kelloe 1859 Dau of John Thomas Turton and Elizabeth Cutts. John Thomas was born 1829 in Brimington, Staveley, Derbyshire and was the son of William born 1790 in Staveley, Derbyshire, Married to Martha Cutts (a different branch of the Cutts family).
I've got the family pegged all the way back from there to the late 1500's or so, so I'm OK in that respect, I was particularly interested in whether you had any photo's of the Turtons in your collection. It's always good to put a face to a name!!
Thanks
Bill

Just saw your post about Durham miners. We have Race in our tree also.
Margaret Race, my 3xgrandmother married Henry Robson Greener who was killed in the Fair Lady disaster in 1880 at Leycett, Staffordshire. Margaret Race Greener and several of her children emigrated to Australia after her husband was killed.
Margaret Race's parents were GEORGE RACE and ELIZABETH FORSTER or FOSTER. George's father may have been George Race also and his mother Mary Baister or Barster.
Margaret had at least one brother GEORGE and sisters ISABELLA and JANE
I wondered if you had any information about these ancestors.
Thanks for your time
Regards
Brian Hope

Hi Kerry,
New to the forum. My maternal grandfather is Morton, the family are all miners from the Wardley and Durham area.

Hi Kerry (and others)
I'm trying to work through the 1911 Census of Bowburn - its first since the pit began to be sunk in 1906 - with a view to getting a picture of where the first families in this colliery village came from, to what extent they knew or were related to each other before they came, whether there are any patterns in terms of the mining companies that the miners themselves had previously worked for, etc.
Of the 17 surnames you listed back in October 2007, no less than six figured here in that Census (accounting for many more than six households) and I am aware of at least another seven arriving after that date. I'd be surprised if none of the people in your tree were either among this first Bowburn generation or closely related to them!
I'd be happy to share information from what I've gathered so far, if anyone is interested. But I'd also, of course, be interested to hear from you or other RootsChatters who may think they've got Bowburn links.
Thanks
Mike
-
Hi,

Hi, don't know if this will of any help. My dad Dennis Parkin was the brother of john Parkin married to Doreen Hunter. This is the first time I have been on this site and found it very interesting and informative. I would really like to hear any other information regarding my uncle John.
