Title: Lost street in Dundee
Post by: chinakay on Friday 26 October 07 04:00 BST (UK)
Hello all, I'm looking for William Paterson who evidently lived at 3 Elizabeth Pl in Dundee in 1871. Mapquest can't produce Elizabeth Pl, so I guess it's gone. Can anyone tell me where it used to be?

Cheers,
China

William John Tadden, one of the Spanish Civil War volunteers died at 38 Elizabeth Street, Dundee in 1937.  Wherever it was, it was probably swept away after WWII.

Another slightly different old map:

http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/centlib/maps/map8/main.htm

Much clearer to read when you zoom in.

Also, if you got the census details from Scotlands People, look at the free header page, it may give you some more clues as to the area the street was located in.

Hi China,
Using the above map which Scotmum gave, if you zoom in and scroll to the right you'll come to a district called Maxwelltown.  Elizabeth Street is bisected by Commerce Street and it leads to George Street to the west and Anne Street to the east.  Good luck.

Okay, after much effort I have finally located Elizabeth Street! So...would Elizabeth Place be off Elizabeth Street?

Some of these maps are excellent, much better than what I had been trying to use (Oldmaps). And the library site looks really useful, many thanks!

But Raphael, I have to report that finder.co.uk is really confused...the Elizabeth St in "Dundee" that it gave you is actually in Tayport, on the other side of the river :D

Cheers,
China

How about that...I just did a google search for "Elizabeth Pl" + Dundee (instead of Elizabeth Place) ...and got my own post at the start of this thread :P

Cheers,

Hello again China,

Another two e-mail addresses that you could contact about your Elizabeth Place in Dundee. I think the Local History would be the best bet though.

For local history materials

As far as I can make out Elizabeth Place was in the Hilltown area of Dundee, Maxwelltown was multi story house built on this area.

Hi China
Just to add I knew the area well as a child and that the top half of Elizabeth Street, between George Street and Commerce Street (later named Alexander Street) was where Maxwelltown Jute Mill was.  The residential part was the other half which ran between Commerce Street and Ann Street.  The whole area has been sadly swept away and is now covered by the 4 ' Maxwelltown ' multi
story blocks  :'(

According to the post code directory, Eliza Street exists in Dundee. However I would want more evidence before concluding that Eliza Street is the same as either Elizabeth Street or Elizabeth Place.

Googling found someone asking back in 2001 on the RootsWeb Angus-L re St Peter district in Dundee (which, according to the census, is where Elizabeth Place was in 1871).

There was no definitive answer but the impression came across that it was a rather short lived district which began in 1868, and that it was probably named after St Peter's Church - now a Free Church.  That church is apparently located at the junction of the Perth Rd and St Peters St.  You can easily find this spot on a modern map at Streetmap UK - the quickest way to get there is probably to search for Mid Wynd.

Anyway, if the above is correct, you might like to search for Elizabeth Place on the various old maps around that same area.

Good luck!

Eliza Street is in the Stobswell area of Dundee, a wee bit away from Elizabeth Street, just to add that I can't recall an Elizabeth Place being off Elizabeth Street when I lived nearby in the 50's :) Jenc

I have a small Tay FHS booklet  - just 11 pages - "A genealogist's guide to closes, squares, lanes, entries,& ., in old Dundee", but can't see Elizabeth Place in it, sorry.

Hi,

I can confirm that Eliza Street is not the same Elizabeth St. Eliza Street is a small street that runs between Albert Street and Dura Street. Dundee

I know this request is old, but I found Elizabeth street. It was torn down, and then later rebuilt in 2018.
It ran north-south between North George street and Alexander street, right down from the church that hosts MaxWell centre. Placing it in Maxwelltown (another entity hard to find).

This website shows you the area rebuild in 2018, and mentions Old Elizabeth street multiple times and it's revival.

Hi andreasetcetc  ;D It was actually Elizabeth Place I'd been looking for, did find Elizabeth Street or someone else did and we concluded it wasn't the right one. Pretty sure my William Paterson living in Elizabeth Pl is the right William, as there were several. Thanks for your interest in my post  :)
