Title: Kay family 1841 census Edinburgh. Who were they? PLEASE HELP!
Post by: kooky on Tuesday 30 October 07 17:13 GMT (UK)
Have my gt gt gr parents JOSEPH and ANN [nee Bremner] KAY, both aged 20, and brother John aged 22 in 1841 census. Both men are Glass Blowers and born Tynemouth, Northumberland.
All others b. Midlothian prob. Edinburgh area.
With them are Margaret Kay aged 16, William Kay aged 13 - glass blower, Richard Kay aged 11, also glass blower, John Kay aged 1 and Margaret Kay aged 2 mths.
I have looked in Scotland's people[tho not recently] and the IGI unsuccessfully for parents for any of the 5 younger Kays.  Can any one suggest a way of finding their parents?
Obviously the 3 eldest could not be children of John, Joseph or Ann.
The younger 2 may be. There are 2 Margarets, perhaps suggesting a different set of parents.
[note mother of John and Joseph was Margaret Watson m John Kay 1818 Newcastle on Tyne]
John is married to Euphemia by the 1851 census at Abbey Hill, St. Cuthbert, Edinburgh
Have not found this marriage. Their child is aged 4.
By 1851 Joseph has returned to England and is in M/C with Ann and 4 children - Joseph 8, William 6, both b. Burslem Staffs, Lilian 3 and Ann 10 mths both b. Edinburgh.
HELP! ::)    Kooky.

hi kooky  :)

possible - 1881

richard kay 52 glassmaker born edinburgh
christiana kay 48 wife born edinburgh
+ children
think wife is christiana ormiston as children line up on IGI(john , margaret,
robert , eliza, richard , christina , joseph)

IF this is your richard then his death cert. might reveal parents(john kay & margaret
watson ?)

1841 census
think john, joseph, margaret , william & richard are brothers & sister
while john and younger margaret are children of joseph and ann  :-\

SP has christina kay(other surname ormiston) death 1907 edinburgh city canongate b. c1834
& richard kay death 1894 edinburgh city canongate b. c1830

Have now found marriage of Richard Kay and Christiana Ormiston Sept. 1853.
Unfortunately the groom's parents are not mentioned!
Have also found births for 2 of their children. Catherine in 1856 and Joseph in 1872.
Also have family in 61,71,81 and 91 censuses.
Found Christiana's death in 1907.

Still looking for births of Margaret, William and Richard, also John and Margaret.
Could do with some help with those!!

Looking at the 1841 census entry for them in Duddingston on Freecen, there appears to be something in the notes column after Margaret aged 2 months. It may have been a typo, or it might be something useful. Could be worth taking a look at the original on SP just in case.

Thanks both!
I am really trying to find the births of Margaret, William and Richard.

On the 1841 census in SP, it states that Margaret was 2 mths and there is a 'Yes' for born in county.

John and Joseph have a 'No', because they were born in Tynemouth, Northumberland.

I am still struggling with this problem! ??? Have found a William Kay birth 9/12/1829 and a John Kay birth 27/4/1838, both with the same parents - William Kay and Helen Anderson, also both Duddingstone.
Any ideas?

Dear Kooky,
I think (and hope) that we may be related. In your postings you mention that Joseph Kay b Newcastle upon Tyne in 1821 is your great great grandfather. He is also mine!
My line descends from Joseph's son William b Burslem 1845 then to William Henry b Tutbury 1864 and then to my mother Gladys Maud Kay b 1905 in Wordsley in Staffordshire. Joseph, William and William Henry were all glassblowers.
I would be most interested to learn if there is any connection between us and if you can provide any further information on the Kays. I have done quite a bit of research on my family tree on Ancestry and have now added John and Margaret as Joseph's parents thanks to your efforts. Have you been able to go back any further back from them and from Ann Bremner's parents?

Dear Kooky,
Yes, no problem for you to access my Ancestry tree. I am not sure how you do this. The tree is called Bullock Family Tree and I think that I can invite you to share, but would need your email address. As you are busy in the run up to Easter, I will wait to hear from you - there is no rush! Kind regards.
