as we can't find Defiance in 1881 can we find Fiance?

(there is a Defiance in 1881 but she belongs to henry Penfold & Ocean Hughes)

hi everyone...

Back again .... had lots to catch up on .... now trying to wrap my brain around the Penfolds again  ::)

Toni has mentioned that there is a William Penfold who we cannot place ...

Maria Penfold (d/o John and Charlotte, sister of john Penfold (1809) and Robert (1816) , she was b c 1831 Hampshire.

Maria Penfold = Henry THOMPSON (1861 she is living with her brother Robert, b 1816)

William Penfold , who we cannot place , was b c 1833 Hants... he married Priscilla THOMPSON  (1871: he has s-i-l  Patience Thomson living with him )

What if William b 1833 is another sibling of John 1809, Robert 1816, Maria 1831...ie he one of the last children of John Penfold who Married Charlotte??

I hope I am making sense .... ::) :-\

Hi toni

Thanks for all your hard work ... I think a summary here would be good ... at the moment I am trawling through part 1 to see if we have missed anything ... ::)....or if there is anything that could be added .....

at the moment we seem to have 3 Branches. possibly 4, stemming from John Penfold snr = Charlotte ??

1. John Penfold 1809 = Harriet James 1814

2. Robert Penfold 1816 = Amelia Page

3. Maria Penfold 1831 = Henry Thom(p)son

and hopefully ..

4.William Penfold b 1833 = Pri(s)cilla Thom(p)son

What to you think of the  no.4 line

deb :)

it certainly looks as though he (William) belongs to the family but we need to find his bapt. or him with other clear family members in the census to confirm.

i don't have access to ancestry but can anyone find John (senior) & Charlotte in 1841 with children particulary Maria should be there and hopefully William

Those Penfolds are the family of the Penfold that started Penfolds Wines.

I posted something on the other thread about their family tree.....several ministers of religion etc......

i think thats Charlotte Brooks m. John Penfold 4 Oct 1792 Steyning

i'm not sure there is anything that links these Penfolds with the Sussex Penfolds, it looks like the Sussex Penfolds stayed in Sussex having children.
while Debs John & Charlotte were having children atthe same time but all over the place!

the first confirmed County is Hampshire and then they went west after that.

 ;D

I am back now ...have had stuff happening ...

I also think that the Sussex Penfolds , may only be Extended family from way back....

the fact that we cannot find my Penfolds in 1851 makes it all the harder to place them . As for the later censuses, I think by that time they had so many children that they were forgetting were they had been born.

Maria d/o John snr and Charlotte?? was b c 1831 in Hampshire. John jnr = Harriet James had their first son Robert in 1832 in Hampshire. arrghhh I have no clue where they all would be ..... Mine did seem to head west ... i would think they were in hampshire still....

helppppppppppp  :-\ ::)

deb

OOO Bear just seen your post ...

so William b c 1833, Hampshire (the guy we cannot place  , who married priscilla Thom(p)son) is hopefully another branch ... :o ;D :D     :-*

A question for Toni......I have been right the way through all 3 of Deb's Penfold threads and copied all the baptisms into a list.

Would it be a good idea to post that on here?

hi, yes it would be a good idea so we can see where they were actaully born (i'm not sure they knew themselves half the time) and also so we don't duplicate them.

perhaps Debs can digest the info. and let us know (a list of)  what she still needs for example

Thomas & Soffia in 1881 census
bapt. of John b.1809 Warminster
etc etc

Hi Matilda  :)

That looks great to me , especially as they are in Hampshire. It's a pity there are no family with or living near them. You would think that they would want to be with the whole family. Where was everyone in 1861?

The youngest s/o John Penfold and Harriet James , was Edward ... he was born c 1853 in Cornwall... so they were all in that area near to 1861. Thomas s/o John and Harriet, married Sophia Orchard in 1866 in Devon.

No Amos Thompson, or anyone from the 1841 list on the previous page . There are other Thompsons born in England tho.

There is an Arthur Penfound , born 1798 , wife Elizabeth.. he is a lodging .... a something keeper

thanks for loking Debs, nobody seems to be able to find them i wonder where they were, just athought does anyone know what pages were missing if any from the census in each area they were last seen?

has anybody found them in the school attendance records?

apparently from 1862 statutory admissio and discharge records begna to be kept byt he head teachers of schools receiving government funding. you will discover that many of these only commence in the 14880's when education became compulsory nationwide for children between the ages of 5 & 10 though local districts could make it so from 1870. the registers may still be stored in the school or may have been transferred to teh county record office, these generally include
every new pupils name
his/her date of birth
the fathers name, place of residence and occ.
the childs date of admission and track his/her progress throug each stage from infant class to senior or until date of departure giving the reason for leaving adn the place removed to if changing schools.

You are helping a lot ! Thanks for all the baptisms of Page children  :D

I am also going around in circles ... so many of them intermarried and used the same names,  that it is difficult even for us, who are family, to keep up!  8)

I would like to find my Thomas Penfold in 1851. Thomas penfold b c 1841 maybe in poole Dorset, s/o John Penfold (1809) and Harriet James (1814).

He marries in 1866...to Sophia Orchard (b c 1845/6) (d/o William and Caroline Orchard)... they are in Devon in 1866 ...cannot find them in 1871 or 1881...In 1891 they along with all kids are in Cornwall.

Bearkat .... I think my post to thank you for the Baptisms disappeared somewhere ....every one of them will help us ... we just have to figure where they fit in  :-\  Thanks so much  :-*

Tiggi ... we are going to move the 2 scavenger hunt threads ( the ones on the Off Topic Board and here in the Common Room board ) to the Travellers board where my Thomas Penfold and Soffia/Sophia Orchard thread is ... That will make it easier to refer to all of these threads .. then we do not have to keep flitting from board to board and hopefully people who stay on the traveller boards may be able to join in or find some relevant family member ...

deb ;D

Hi Tiggi

The Scavenger Hunts are ALL posted in the Common Room initially, then they are moved to a more relevant board, in this case the Travellers Board.   You will be notified with the link when it is moved.   You'll still be able to post on it, don't worry.      ;D

I think you all should be congratulated on doing such a magnificent job.   Well done everybody.   I know Deb is highly delighted with the information she's received.

I can't believe how big this family was.

I thought travellers had their regular route they travelled each year.  Debs family started in the east of England, moved westwards and kept going.... to the USA!

Sorry Deb, it will have to stay two threads as one long one makes for more of a download and therefore more of a strain on the inner workings of RC.    You'll just have to do a search and rescue for the first thread if you need anything off it ........sorry     :-\

there were several children :

These I know were James Smith children after Selina married on all other marriages he is deceased:
Selina Married Henry James 1866 plymouth
William married Caroline Smitheram 1874 Helston
Harriet married Robert Lee 1876 Cornwall
Peggy married Joseph Orchard 1875 Truro

William and Caroline are my ancesters, Peggy, Bessie, and Brittania, can confirm were siblings, but Selina I thought was a cousin, not a sibling,

well i am astounded ... more cousins ...I am loving it ... I have done the dinner and dishes and am back...hee hee

okay ... I think the Abraham Boswell that I know is related to Colleen ...he was the one that was in prison for a long time and married ?? ..I am not sure . Alli know of the Boswell link to my Family is Christopher Penfold who married mariah/maria Boswell the sister of Abraham. They did not have any children so they are not a 'blood' connection to my Penfolds ...

Christopher Penfold married carnation Richards in 1903, she had Eddy and died in 1906 .... Christopher , s/o Thomas Penfold and Sophia Orchard then married Maria Boswell around 1911...Blimey .. this family is GINORMOUS !!!!

I am in touch with my cousin whose grandparents were Christopher P and Carnation R

Toni and Tiggi and everyone......Rootschat has had two crashes.....the first time lots of posts disappeared......then it crashed a second time and now some of the posts are back.....but the posts made between the two crashes have disappeared.  I suggest at present that you copy everything as soon as someone posts it.....until Rootschat settles down again. Trystan is working on it.....

Looking good for Pricilla PENFOLD, 6 months, b Dorchester,a daughter living with Robert and Amelia PENFOLD in Uplyme Devon in the 1861 (in the list of persons not in houses).
And in 1871 with Robert and Amelia as daughter Pricilla PENFOLD age 11 (though she is listed as b Leigh Dorset - but her 13yo sister is listed as b Dorchester).
But 1881 throws a spanner in the works.  Robert and Amelia still have a daughter Priscilla with them - age 18 born Ibberton Dorset.

so it could be James & keziah are brother & sister
but where does Wisdom fit ?

Wisdom Smith I believe ( unconfirmed) was son of James Smith and Keziah Smith James sister so wisdom would be her nephew and he married Edith Buckland 1872 Bromsgrove daughter Tenett Buckland & Keziah Smith

Hi Bellou

do you have parents for your Elizabeth Penfold (1808).

I have John Penfold (1809) = Harriet James (1814, Kingclere)
Robert Penfold (1816) = Amelia Page
Maria penfold (1831) =Henry Thompson
There are others ...their parents were John Penfold and Charlotte??

I am not 100% sure but think it just means that they were a travelling Amusement and as they had to put down on Census where people were  from town villiage county etc
For a travelling Circus it didn't come under that  and as they were like so many people in one place of different origins easier to put Circus ( but mind you it helps when you are looking for them lol)
Lots of travellers did different things horse trading basket making mat making as trades, but many went and worked for Circus & fairs having their own amusement business I think that's where the fairs that go around Uk stem from today
So you had really 2 types of travellers the real romani lone travellers and the amusement travellers I think myself it helps to define the two
although as families they inter mingled
Way back before Census records there were those that ran Dance booths another type of Amusement entertainment by traveller's ( not always legal)
and its from that the fairs etc stem but then we also have foreign persons coming over here with circus as amusement and the romani people saw it as a way to make money ( clever people changing with the times attaching themselves to circus)
hope that explains it for you

not quite sure of the signifigance of a circus census, is it different to a normal one ?

Hi tiggi  ;D ;D

I was thinking the same myself ... I think that the circus/entertainment/traveller census just makes it easier to look up.

Thanks for that Toni ....

having posed the question what if the difference between the two census i thought you might be interested in the reply :~

circus folk are not on the normal census records as they where classed travellers so they had a seperate census done which includes fairground gypse hawkers and general travelleres

so there you go then  ;D

Hi Lorraine

Quote

That makes no sense to me whatsoever ;D

There wasn't a separate census for circus folk or travellers.  From 1871 all "travellers" should be listed in the census in the normal way ie. as they appeared on the enumerators route.  There was no instruction to include them in 1841 or 1851 though occasionally they were recorded by conscientious enumerators.  In 1861 separate forms were provide to list those not living in houses and these are usually to be found at the end of each parish/district etc..  You might find the following link helpful as to who was and wasn't included:

Hi Deb

I thought I would post this here as it now connects my Smiths to your Penfolds,

I am delighted to say that Robert Penfold father (John) married  Fiance Smith  sister to Harriet Lee (nee Smith)  (my GR GR  Grandmother)  on July 17 1854 in Uffculme Devon,

The marriage certificate is a bit wet as it was put in the wrong box, no wonder it was late

Hi all, I came across the linked picture recently in a book called "Victorian and Edwardian Devon from old photographs" by Brian Chugg.

It is obviously from the same day as cath's at #191.

In the book it say's the bride is Sally Penfold and her groom an Orchard and that the man second from the left is her father-in-law, Joe Orchard - this is at odds with the note on Cath's.

The ackowledgement in the book says it comes from The Museum of English Rural Life at Reading University so I got the link for the picture from there.

You can go to http://www.reading.ac.uk/merl/commercialservices/merl-imagesandreprographics.asp and click on "Browse our online database" on the right hand menu and put Penfold in. Amongst the other things it finds is the same picture of James Penfold's brush wagon which Cath also has a copy of

Ok...so I think I am joined to this as follows:

Robert Penfold b1816 m Amelia Page b1818
Their daughter
Elizabeth Penfold b1859 Dorchester d1925 Weymouth (m 1887) John Mayne b1856 Surrey
Their children
John Mayne b 1888 Swanage
Robert Mayne b 1888 Swanage
Elizabeth Mayne b 1891 Weymouth
Rachel Vera b1895 Weymouth d1947 Sydney Australia (m1918) Walter Percy Scott AIF in Chickerell
Patience b 1900 Wyke Regis

Can any confirm that I've go the right Elizabeth that married John Mayne?

Thanks,  Alison

Hi Alison

A John Mayne did marry in 1887 Jan/Feb/Mar Dorchester  5a 608, having looked for a Elizabeth Penfold yes there is one same place date etc and ref No which suggests they wed each other
have you bought this certificate ? it should give you fathers this would help trace Elizabeth Penfold side & John's factually

I found Elizabeth birth register - 1859 Dorchester Jan/Feb/Mar 5a 362

1861 Rowcomb Lane, Uplyme Axminster Devonshire
Robert with Amelia - Robert M  23 Southampton - Thomas 12 Exeter- James 11 Bridgewater
Holiff/Olive 8 Dorset - Henry 6 Yeovil - Elizabeth 2 Dorchester - Priscilla 6mths Dorchester
Maria Thompson  29 Hampshire Sister  & Henry Thompson 6 Bath Nephew

Maria was a Penfold who wed Henry Thompson 1853 Southampton
It would appear she was daughter of a John & Charlotte baptised 1831 3rd July Brockenhurst Hampshire - John occupation was dealer in Brushes,so that would then make Robert also a son if her brother, although nothing proved to back this up other than entry on this census.

1871  Near Seaway Lane, Abbotsbury Weymouth Dorset
lists Robert & Ameila with their children  - Thomas b 1848 Devon - Harry b 1856 Somerset - Robert 1851 Devon- Holiff/Olive 1853 Dorset - Elizabeth 1858 Dorset -Priscilla 1860 Dorset

1881 Hod Hill Lane, Shillingstone Aka Shilling Okeford Dorset
Robert Penfold 65 Wiltshire -Brushmaker - Amelia 65 Kent- Elizabeth  21 Dorset - Priscilla 18 Dorset with married children
+
Harry Penfold 25 Somerset - Charlotte 22 Hampshire - Henry 6 Hampshire - Wm 5 Dorset
Charlotte 3 Dorset - Amelia 3mths

James Penfold 27 Bridgewater Somerset - Priscilla 24 Portsmouth - Priscilla 6 Somerset- John 5 Dorset-  Patience 3 Dorset

Thomas Penfold 30 Dorset - Patience 22 Sussex - Patience 9 Dorset - Richard 5 Dorset
There are some more names a couple could William 23 & Olive 24  ? daughter Betsy  2 unable to read correctly surname could be Robert daughter Holiff?

I have looked at 1891 & 1901 & 1911 Census

1891 1, Caravan, Billnton, Stanton Drew Clutton Somerset
John Mayne 25 b 1866 Surrey - traveller - Elizabeth 32 b 1859 Dorchester
John  6- Robert 5- Elizabeth 1 -
+
Charlotte Penford 15 Dorset - servant
Henry Penford 20 Hampshire -servant
Bill Riddle 48 Wiltshire- servant
Also a family of Walker in caravan David 54? Elizabeth 54 - Arthur unable to read place of births
Think Charlotte & Henry would be Elizabeth brother's children Harry

1901 3, Devon Terrace, Weymouth finds family of John & Elizabeth Mayne living in a caravan in Cemetery lane
John 35 Hawker - Elizabeth 40-John 13 -Robert 13- Elizabeth 10 - Rachel 6 - Patience 6mths

1911 Putton Lane Chickerell Weymouth in 1 room
Alfred Penfold 26 ( b 1885) married 6mths born Hampshire greengrocer/hawker - Cissie 21  b Dorset
on next page
Lower Chickerell Road Chickerell Weymouth
John Mayne 45 greengrocer/hawker - Elizabeth 45 married 24 yrs 7 children 2 died/5 living
John 23-married -Robert 23 -single- Rachel 17 single- Patience 11
Henry Penfold 50 (b 1861) single -servant greengrocer/hawker no place of origin given
likely the son of Elizabeth brother Harry who was with her in 1891

Robert & Amelia their first child Robert was christened in 1838  25th March Minstead Hampshire
and they married in 1836 26th Dec Bishop Waltham Hampshire- Amelia nee Page

Rachel Penfield 1840 13th Dec Cranborne, Dorset
John Penfold 1843 8th Jan Privett, Hampshire
Olive Penfold christened 19th Dec 1852 Winfrith-Newburgh, Dorset
Priscilla Penfield 1860 28th Oct Hilfield Dorset
Elizabeth Penfold christened 1st Jan 1860 West Chickerell, Dorset

I know that the Robert Penfold bapt 1832 Hampshire son of John & Harriet James married Defiance Smith then lived with her sister Louisa Smith when Defiance died, having several children by both sisters who are part of my family line, so not same person.
John & Harriet also had
Son John Penfold christened 1834 29th June Hale Hampshire, but they came from  Hythe Kent
Son William Penfold christened 1836 31st July Pimperne, Dorset
Daughter Charlotte christened 1838 2nd Sept North Stoneham Hampshire
Daughter Elizabeth Penfold 1845 14th Sept Weymouth Dorset
Son Alfred Penfold 1847 7th November Chard Somerset

The earliest John Penfold I can find was christened 1813 19th Sept Portsmouth St Thomas
son of John & Elizabeth Hawker - could they also be parents of Robert if b 1816?

A John Penfold & Elizabeth Thompson banns read 1817 9th April Goudhurst Kent

John Penfold & Harriet James banns were read in Pimperne Dorset 1831 2nd May

could their be a connection ?

Hello distant relatives!

I've taken a ton of screenshots to hopefully help me write up a bit more of the tree tomorrow! Project for my Nan, she is now a gill, daughter of Nelson temple vercoe & Amy penfold. I've read through this & scavenger 1. Also trying to use up my 3 newbie posts so I can pm! We're in Cornwall, UK & Holsworthy, Devon (my nan visits a cousin I think she is, Sophie?). So glad you worked out the great defiance mystery, it's had me stumped all afternoon! Tara
