Hi there Eric and welcome from me too. How have you been getting on since your last post?
I  posted a message to you earlier on but there was a problem on the site I believe and the message got lost, together with many others.
To recap, I have Roscoes in my family tree -- they originated in Bolton in the 18th century but my branch moved to Pendleton, then Salford and later still, some members moved to Cheshire.
If you can give us a few names and dates of birth or marriage we might be able to find your relatives in the 1901 census, and thus have a chance of taking them even further back.
                        All the best
                                   Jane

Hi Jane,
Sorry I missed your reply, the only info I have to date is as follows
My family were called Eaton and Martha Eaton had a daughter named Margaret
who married John Roscoe (known as Jack) they lived in Pendleton/ Ordsall area
maybe later in Manchester lived around 1900 - 1930.
That is all I have at the moment.
Thanks for your interest Regards Eric

Hi, Eric,
I have found the marriage of your John W. Roscoe and Margaret Barlow, as per your corrected details, on the FreeBMD site.
The reference , in case you don't already have it, is
       1918 December quarter, Chorlton 8c 1251.
If you ordered this certificate from the GRO you could find out who John's father was.
Meanwhile there is  a John W, Roscoe born in Hulme about 1890 on the 1901 census, father William , mother Martha, living at Ordsall.
   RG13; Piece: 3736; Folio: 49; Page: 45.
Details to follow if you want them, I have to go offline for the night now

You're welcome, Eric, people on this site have helped me loads so it's good to be able to help out in my turn.

Here's the info from the 1901 census.
16 Eldon Street.
William Roscoe head m Brass presser b. Lancs Hulme
Martha ditto wife                          also born Hulme
John W. ditto son 11                          ..       ..      ..
Mary ditto daughter 6                          b. ?Harwick?
Cicely ditto daughter 2 born Salford
John Jones brother in law 22 cloth dyer born Hulme
John ditto son 2 also b. Hulme

  In 1891
RG12/3194/114/29
34 Lord St
*William Henry Roscoe head m 22 labourer in brass foundry b. Lancs Manchester
*Martha A Roscoe wife m 20 general servant                 also b. M/c
John W son 1                         again born            M/c
Ann mother widow 60 charwoman b. Lancs Worsley

From the info in 1901 where there is a brother in law surname Jones, I looked for a William Roscoe/Martha Jones marriage and found :

*William Henry Roscoe m. Martha Ann Jones March quarter 1890 Chorlton 8c 919.

This must be the couple I found in 1891 as I wrote out above, with two forenames apiece, despite the fact that it says they were born in Manchester.
Another checking point is William's job in the brass industry. If you factor in the Jones in-laws we saw 1901 I am pretty sure we have the right family again.

I also found a birth for a John William Roscoe  June quarter 1890 Chorlton 8c 859

However,we can't be sure all this information refers to your particular John W Roscoe who married your Margaret Barlow, until we see that marriage certificate and see who John W's father was --it should also give his father's occupation, which would be another check.
I hope this isn't too muddled, and that it helps.
                       All the best
                                     Jane

No problem Eric. Let me know when you get the certificate , if you want any further help. I am looking for a William Henry Roscoe myself, though yours doesn't seem to be the right one for me. Sometimes you can find people by process of elimination, so it is no trouble to look into any Roscoes around!
All the best and good hunting
                                          Jane

Hello All

I am very interested in Ada Roscoe born Ada Davies, 3 Oct 1884 in Pendleton.
She was my great grandmother but later married John Roscoe. She died in Salford in 1955.
Her siblings were Annie (became Clegg) Mary E (became Smith), Thomas and Sarah E (became Collinge). We don't know the name of my grandmother's father, Rachel was born in Mid Wales in 1906 and had 14 children, married name Evans.

Many thanks for any assistance. Garfield Evans. Towcester.
