Title: Watson - A bit of help would not go a mis!
Post by: keapundit on Monday 12 November 07 04:49 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I'm not new to Genealogy but very much a novice, I live in New Zealand, I have a complete tree from when our branch of the Watson tree floated to these shores and one ancestor back in Perth Scotland.

I'm looking to trace as far back as possible from the relative below.

Andrew Peebles Watson, born 7th September 1834, Perth Scotland.  Died, 17 March 1900, Orawa, New Zealand (cert. 27998)
He was married to Susan Mary Craske (Australian).
His father was Andrew Watson, born abt 1799, his mother was Julia Nicholson.

Please help, I was very excited to find and verify this link but I'm at a brick wall now.

Jason Watson.

Hello
I take it that the parents, Andrew and Julia - moved to NZ? Is there no info on their death records of who their parents were?
Have just been into Scotlands People (SP)  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Did a search for an Andrew Watson born from 1798 to 1801 in Perth ( this includes all parishes) and came up with 3.

1.05/09/1798 Andrew Watson born to James Watson and Margaret Forbes (in the parish of Errol)
2.  06/03/1799  Andrew Watson born to James Watson (no mothers name given) - in Parish of Kinfauns - I viewed this cert - to lazy to go back to SP - am at work - I'm sure it was a baptismal one - so he probably is also no.1
3.  15/09/1799 Andrew Watson born to Thomas Watson and Margaret Gellatly (parish of Kinklaven).

At this time the entires are normally quite bare - a few lines in a register.

Unless you have the names Forbes or Gellatly in your line- I think you may have some difficulty tracing further back.

Good luck with your search.  Steve     :O)

Hello,
I can't help myself...  Went back onto SP.  The Andrew Watson at no.2 from the previous post was baptised in Kinfauns in 1799, so it looks as there was only one Andrew Watson born in Perth(shire) recorded in SP in 1799  Andrew Watson born to Thomas Watson and Margaret Gellatly on 15/09/1799.

I've downloaded the image and if you PM me - I can send it to you.

I have not searched Scotland wide for other Andrews born that year - only in Perth (shire)

Regards,  Steve   :O)

Just checked the censuses on SP 1841, 1851 no sign of Andrew or Julia Watson - Scotlandwide.  I may be wrong - perhaps someone with census access can confirm.

Hiya Jason

Welcome to Rootschat!

in 1851 we have at West-woodend, Kinclaven

Andrew Watson c 1800 b Kinclaven, Perthshire head Wright(master)
Margaret Watson c 1840 b Kinclaven dau
Isabella Watson c 1845 b Kinclaven dau

in 1841 we have at Mireside, Kinclaven

Janet Watson b c 1806 b Perthshire wife
Margaret c 1840 b Perthshire dau
Robert c 1837 b Perthshire son

Parish Kinclaven ed 1

The only Andrew listed in Perthshire c 1837 was b St Ninians, Stirlingshire in the 1851 census

There is an Andrew b c1834 in the 1841 census - details are

at Oliver Brook, Kilspindie, Perthshire

Andrew Watson c 1834 b Perthshire
Catherine Watson c 1801 b Perthshire
Elizabeth Watson c 1761 b Perthshire
Elizabeth Watson c 1831 b Perthshire

Parish Kilspindie ed 3

There are only 4 Julia Watson listed in the 1841 census Scotland wide - none of them have an Andrew listed with them and the youngest was b 1816

Dont know if this helps or hinders

Yeah!

On Familysearch there is a marriage listed

30.11.1834 at Kinclaven, Perth

Andrew Watson and Janet McGreggor

Could Janet be your Andrews second wife?

Hi Jason
I am also descended from Andrew Peebles Watson & Julia Nicolson  (they were not married).  My grandfather was John Nicolson Watson.  I would be interested to know which of his siblings you are descended from.  Also could you please tell me the details of his father's birth c1799.  I found Andrew Watson born 1806, Perth, Perthshire, but this may not be correct.

Hi Annabell,

My Dad was Ian Robert Watson,
His Dad was Cecil James Watson,
His Dad was John Nicholson Watson,
His Dad was Andrew Peebles Watson.

I don't have a lot of details about Andrew Watson, a part from a copy of the baptismal notice for Andrew Watson born to Thomas Watson and Margret Gellatly, from Kinclaven.

Hi Jason
I met your sister Karen some years ago in Taupo (where I was born).  I never met your Dad.  We were over from Aust. last Aug/Sept to visit friends & relatives & do a bit of research.  My parents were Alex & Ivy Tierney (daughter of John Nicolson Watson). I have found:

Andrew Watson b. 1806 Perth
James Watson b. Perth 1783, m. Margaret Young, Perth,1802
Alexander Watson b. c1750 & Margaret Gellatly, parents of James & 3 other children all born Perth 1776-1783.

I am wondering why you think Andrew was born in Kinclaven & not Perth.  Also Julia named her son James & Andrew Peebles 3rd son was Alexander which follows naming patterns of those days.  (There is no Thomas in the family).

I tried to be very thorougher, but I'll re-check all my names & dates.

Your dates sound interesting, the name James kept on popping up a lot.

My Email is: jwatson at kol dot co dot nz, if you email me I'll send you a copy of that baptismal record.

Have you read about what happened at Kinclaven castle by William Wallace?
