Does anyone know anything about Henry Charley who killed his wife Sarah in Coventry, 1896? He was sent to Portland prison for 7 years. Im looking for a motive.

Hello! i'm not sure if you're still active on here, but i have the answer to your question.
Basically, he and his wife had a massive row, she ran outside to the street, and Henry picked up a parafin lamp, opened the front door and hurled it at her, hitting her in the chest and exploded. She ran in the next door neighbours house in flames, but later died of her injuries.
I have the full newspaper report of the trial if you're interested.

Hi, my daughter may be related to you. Shes a direct descendent of Henry and Sarah. The Coventry archives have recently sent me the copy but many thanks!! The was also an abortionist in the family, but she was only a Charley through marriage. Lovely lot lol.

Oh OK, so you know what happened - i think he ended up in Wormwood Scrubs. Was he ever released?
I'm not related to the Charley's, although i believe my direct anscestor's would have known him and about this incident, as they once lived near to them on Much Park Street. No, i stumbled across the story at work and found it interesting that's all.

He served 6 yrs I think it was but died not long after release.

This story sounds fascinating! I am related to the Charleys via my maternal grandmother Enid Evelyn Charley who was killed in the London bombings of 1944. Was the Henry Charley you mention son of Henry Charley and Susannah Holtham? If not,can you tell me anything you may know?
