Hello ,
Now most of us have seen a picture or two of our ancestors,
Have you noticed any similar features with you or your children ?
Heights
deep set eyes
long nose
round face
Etc
-
This is me ,my son and my Grandfather ! :D
Do we look similer ?
-
I wish I could do something similar. I have never seen a picture of my grandfather who died young in 1939, but a relative who knew him says I look very similar.
More to the point and in keeping with the spirit of the thread, my sixth cousin, who I made contact with earlier this year tells me that certain facial features in his side of the family are also found in my side of the family. Considering how many generations we have to go back to a common ancestor, that is quite remarkable. I suppose that in a sample size of (say) 30 people, a feature shared by 5 or 6 could well be shared by a similar proportion in another branch of the family, even over such a long period of time.

Hi
This is my daughter with her grandmother superimposed both about the same age 2 I think, I called the picture spooky !!

:) What a good picture Peter ! :)

I said it before and I'll say it again Mr. G - there is a striking resemblance between you and your grandfather, but I think your son is more like Mrs. G.
My husband, his father, his g. grandfather and gg.grandfather are all 'spitting images'. I wish I could find out something about his grandfather to know if he 'fits the bill'!!
Jill
-
You look very much like your Grandfather G, but your son has a look of Elvis, it must be because Mrs. G was surrounded by pictures when she was expecting him !
My sister as a baby was the spitting image of my Mum. My brother is the spitting image of my Mum's uncle, and I am the spitting image of a young Elizabeth Taylor ;) ;D

Hi
What some great photographs !
I have read this poem which I would like to share with you..
I am the family face:
Flesh perishes, I live on,
Projecting trait and trace
Through time to times anon,
And leaping from place to place
Over oblivion,
The eternal thing is man,
That heeds no call to die.
By Thomas Hardy know as "Heredity"
Images always leave me quite speechless as they say so much.

Hi All
This is 4 generations of Batemans - not sure if similar - but never thought about it before - good post!
Cheers

No 1 and No 4 definitely ..... although the eyes noses and ears of all 4 pictures are similar.

Since a lot of family photos have been recently discovered, it is amazing the likenes carried through the generations.
I look a lot like my grandfather (William Webb). I'm not putting my ugly mug on the internet, but here is a link to my grandfathers photo http://webb-erickson.rootschat.net/photographs.htm
I have a sister who is the double of our gg grandmother and another sister who is the double of my grandfather's sister.
It was quite moving to see the likenesses and also a little eerie.

Jonathan, Come on now put your picture on so we can take a gander to see if you look similar :D
-
Not only was I the spitting image of my grandfather (mum's side) up until my late twenties, before I put on weight, but apparently I have some of the exact mannerisms, the way I move my head and hands....
The really odd thing is that my grandad died some twenty-five years before I was born!!! :o :o
My great-uncle commented on it at one Christmas/New Years family party. Shame he is not alive today to repeat it! :'(
I also happen to share the same sporting interests as my grandfathers (cricket and cycling). My grandad used to hold the 24hr world distance record in the 1920s. I have some photos from the 20s and 30s of him racing various bikes, including a penny-farthing, at the original Herne Hill track in London. I'll try and dig these out! I spent ten years living in France and Belgium racing bikes in amateur competitions, but had to give up due to injury.
Geoff.
-
Geoff, I also have some mannerisms of my grandfather. It is weird though since I only saw him two or three times when I was much younger.
Also, I don't look like much like either of my parents as the likeness seems to have 'jumped' a generation or more in my family.

Jonathan ,
Are you shy! :D
Come on lets take a look !! ;D
I have put my self on :o
-
Ok ok ok Graceland. But I warn you it's the only photo I have and the likeness is not obvious, though everyone says we look alike.
Warning, this photo will self-destruct after 10 minutes .....

Similarities abound in my family, both from the maternal and paternal sides. So much so in fact that the birth of a nephew caused a bit of strife twixt self and wife!True.
Of seven children, five are identifiable as close relatives, two are identifiable with an earlier generation, amongst cousins, the same, some of my siblings have also kept small frailties in the female side of the family.Spooky? Well here is spooky for you Cariad, one night a week ago i was up til 3 am,reading of the Famine Years in Ireland,
eventually getting to sleep much later, and
dwelling on my anscestors of the time.
Next day, taking a clean shirt from my wardrobe,I noticed a ball of fluff or cotton wool on the floor, picking it up I found a silver Claddah ring mixed in it.My first thought believe it or not was ,Thank You

There's definitely a few similarities between my living family and my ancestors!
My dad looks exactly like his great grandfather Henry John Moore -
(http://www.muchos.co.uk/members/ModChick/HM.JPG)
My sister takes after my dads side of the family, while I'm definitely more similar to my mums side. I look most like my great grandmother Vera Louise Moon -

Me -

I never met Vera, she died about 15 years before I was born. Even so family members have noticed the similarity, even down to things like sense of humour and general way of speaking.
The one thing that frustrates me about family history more than any other is that I'll never be able to meet any of these people! I really want to have known them and spent time with them..
-
Hi All,
Can anybody see the face in the picture behind nutkin's mum, or is it my eyes playing tricks again.
kooly..
-
You are right. I see a face too. How eerie!! I wonder who it could be?
-
Mr G., I see your grandfathers ears match the one of your's I can see but your son looks a great deal like your grandfather. The same shape head w/long jaw and same eyes. I have met people I never knew who knew one or the other of my parents and they say "oh, you look just like your mother/father" so I must have some dominate features from each parent because there is no way I can look exactly like Both of them. I think what people see when they look at you is some dominate feature and if that matches the ancestor's they just "See" you looking "Exactly" like that ancestor. Leagen
-
i recently got pics of other family members of whom i didn't know and yes I can find resemblances all over second cousins with similar noses and aunts and grandparents with same shaped faces.................. v Spooky

Well at least thay don't look like spocks ears ;D ;D
-
Blimey Kooly!! That's really quite un-nerving, I can actually make out an entire figure :o
Anyways...if you take a look at the guy to the left below my name: this is my Grandfather Kenneth Hill. I've never met him although he's alive (long story). Now take a look at my other Grandfather David Hopkins (he passed away three years prior to my birth): http://pub41.bravenet.com/photocenter/album.php?img=75838&usernum=3444388397
Combine them and you get me...more or less. Except for I have Blonde hair and Blue eyes (that's the German in me!!) ;D
-
The spookiest resemblance in my family is how similar my young Dad looks to my wife's young Mam!
(http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~alwyn/dadifanc.jpg) (http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~alwyn/mairifanc.jpg)
I don't think that they are related - but who knows what further research might throw up?
-
;D What great hairstyles !!! :o ;D
-
My birth name site did a survey on physical characteristics, everything, weight , height, hair colour.
I came out as a perfect match
But I then found out I had a different biological father Perhaps I grew to look like my birth family!
